Been ordering from YEN YEN for 30+ years. I recently moved out of state and was back and ordered from here. I could tell right away as soon as I opened my food it wasn’t the same. Then I read it’s new owners. I always order the pepper steak. The quality of meat is definitely not the same although the $35 price point is the same. I asked for medium rare and it was tough and well done. Soooo disappointed! I’ll only be going to the Arlington Heights location now since I read they aren’t affiliated anymore.
While the lunch take away was tasty, the portion was on the smaller side and did not offer a soup like nearby competitors. The reason for the 3 star tho is the use of styrofoam containers. On top of being absolutely awful for our planet, the container was melted by the heat of one of the entrees which was a complete turn off. Additionally, the containers are not very good at keeping the sauce from leaking so after a pretty regular ride home on the floor of my car, half the sauce was all over the packaging. While plastic isn’t much better at least it can be recycled so please consider upgrading for the sake of future business.
Ive been coming here for years but moved to the city so Ive only had it carry out for a while but today I decided to dine in with a friend and it was better than ever! We ordered the chicken/broccoli chow mein Cantonese style, lobster sauce shrimp, egg rolls, wonton soup, and egg drop soup- all were delicious!! It was my friends first time here and she loved it too. The place was clean, the service was great (our server was extremely friendly and helpful), and the food was bomb- what more can you ask for? It deserves at least 4.8 stars....how it has a 4.0 star rating is beyond me 🤷
Wonderful food, service is usually very good but had some challenges earlier this year due to being short staffed. Best egg rolls anywhere. We come for sit down, real Chinese. Their carry out is always overly busy.UPDATE 10/24/18 - Original owners sold. New owners have upgraded everything from the dinnerware to the floor, which was needed. Menu remains the same (delicious) other than they added sushi, which I have not tried yet. Services is much better now.
The food arrived on time thats about the best I can say. The special fried rice was over cooked and dry, the BBQ spare ribs were over cooked and dry as well. The sesame chicken was nicely cooked but lacking sauce. All-in-all we felt the meal was rushed. I dont think well be ordering from there again.
Granted it was Christmas night so you expect the service to be a little slower. When we walked asked do you have a reservation but half the tables were empty. The food was not appetizing the fried rice seem like it was left over from yesterday they ran out of hot tea cuz they said they turned the boiler off. I have lived by this restaurant for all the time theyve been open. Now Ive reassured myself theres a reason for my not being here more than three times.I must say that the best part of the experience was walking out after the meal.
I was visiting the area for work and decided to order takeout, I tried this restaurant twice. The pot stickers and hot and sour soup were quite good, but the entrees were not exceptional, the Mongolian beef had 4 times as many onions as beef. The kung pao chicken was better in terms of meat to vegetables.ratio, but had only green peppers and this dish usually has red peppers, so it was unexpected.
Very mediocre food with bland flavor. Tried 3 different chicken dishes that all tasted the same (tasted like the orange chicken which is the only decent thing we tried), and the dishes that were supposed to be spicy were not even remotely. Fried rice was dry and bland as well and Singapore noodles had no flavor or spice either. Also my spouse found parts of shrimp tail still attached to his shrimp. Not fun to find in your food. Surprised at how many disappointments we found here we wont be going again.
1st time at Yen Yen @ Buffalo Grove. Ive heard stories for years on how good the food is at this place but if I wanted a higher tier Chinese restaurant you would find me at Heng Wing in Palatine. Finally a group went to Yen Yen and gave it a try. I had the beef and broccoli and my wife has the shrimp and lobster sauce. Both exceeded my expectations and are equal to taste to Heng Wing.Happy to give Yen Yen 5 stars
I never had such a bad meal in my life. Or rushed in and out of a place so fast (especially since it was at 5PM and very few were in the place). The Wonton soup was like salted toilet water and beef mushroom chop suey had little beef. My advice is to find another place to eat and not eat here.
Yen yen is a restaurant with ok food and descent service. Ive attended with my family on numerous occasions and always find it is a bit better than your standard take out food, but not by much. Food is somewhat bland and texture lacking but overall tastes acceptable. Portions are quite large and can feed an adult male probably for lunch the following day
Upon heading to Yen Yen as of recent to check in from the dry, vinegar-drenched chicken (Possibly mistaken with Soy Sauce) last year, I ended up ordering a classic; the General Tsos Chicken, paired up with some pork stir-fry.Yen Yen has since remodeled the building. There is more space to sit down and choose your meals, but you can still go for a quick online order and pickup from convenience.CHECK YOUR ORDER & YOUR RECEIPT.I dont know if anyone else might have been short-changed, but many of the lunch specials range around $8.99 online but in the receipt, it says that the order is $13.99. Im not exactly the person who would nit-pick over this kind of stuff, but from what the cashier was hinting at with me, this was NOT the first time they encountered it!Their website has false pricing compared to how their POS system is! To the one guy picking up all those vegetarian dishes, I humbly apologize for not making a mention. The food is actually okay for what its worth, but I would not head back here if they still plan on doing this kind of practice.
Lunch is no dealDisappointed, paid nealy $8 to get a lunch box filled halfway with white rice.Fried rice is an extra $1.50 and there is no egg roll with the meal. There isa small place down the road where you do get an egg roll, a choice of whiteor fried rice, at no extra charge and a good sized portion of what you ordered.Had a simple question on the change returned at the register and got a bunchof attitude about how much better his math skills were than mine.Dont plan on going back, there are other deals in the neighborhood that are better.
Weve been coming to this location along with the Arlington Heights location (when John & Joann were the owners) for close to 20 years! We love the Won Ton Soup, Egg Rolls, Tomatoe pepper beef or Shrimp, and Our all time favorite, CHICKEN CHOP SUEY!! Its delicious!! We love it! And the new owner Winnie, is soo friendly, kind and accommodating. We love Gemma and Javier too. Their our friends. Best Chinese food in Lake County!! And, THE BEST EGG ROLLS TOO!! They taste like pastry. And the sweet & sour sauce and hot mustard is DELICIOUSSSSS!! If you like Traditional Cantonese style Chinese food, then Yen Yens is your place! I just ate the left over egg rolls and they was FANTASTIC!! Im going back AGAIN tomorrow!!
I have been going to Yen Yen for many years. I was last there in January. Well I went today and I thought I was in a different restaurant. At first I thought they just remodeled, then the food came. So very disappointed. I’m guessing these are new owners. This WAS the best Chinese food ever, now it tastes like something you get at a mall. I won’t be back. They need to change the name because it is definitely not Yen Yen.
Screwed up our order two out of last three times ordered. Offered us a credit for forgotten item on next order and conviently had no record of such credit upon us trying to place our next order. Can understand now why they have the lowest rating online of local Chinese restaurants. Congratulations Yen Yen you just earned yourself another poor review and another lost customer.
Cigarette in the box.I never recommend others to have a meal here because Marlbolo cigarette was inside of box. My wife felt weird taste while eating so that we found it inside. My wife has pain in her throat by this.I wrote this into here for your health.Date : 3/15/2019 dinner time
Normally I wouldnt give this place five stars, but I have tried lunch takeout at every Chinese restaurant within a ten minute drive of my work in Buffalo Grove, and this is the only place Ive found acceptable. Its slightly more expensive than all the super-cheap takeout places, but I dont mind paying $6.50 for lunch if the food is decent and I have a craving for Chinese food.

2021-09-16I stopped by the restaurant for a quick lunch break and was pleased with food and service at the Yan Yan. Food came out quickly and was fresh and tasted great. Wonton soup and chicken shrimp with rice is what i had. I would definitely stop by again. Fear pricing as well in my opinion

2022-07-18Since the days of Yen Yen, this restaurant has been top notch. The staff is always amazing and the food is even better. We are never disappointed when we eat here. I will note the portions are pretty huge for meals, so you might consider sharing! Highly recommend!

2022-03-31This restaurant used to be Yen Yen and I loved going there for lunch. Its now under newer ownership and called Yan Yan.Its been about 9 years since I had been there because I no longer work in that area... but yesterdays hopes of tasting memory lane fell a bit short. My order didnt arrive crispy as I requested, and their spicy sauce was burnt and didnt taste as good as it used to...The staff has always been wonderful and they still are, but I hope when I try again... the food is like it used to be.

2022-03-08My husband and I went here for the first time for lunch about a week ago. We were very impressed with the cleanliness, excellent service and the food was delicious. We will be changing from our regular place we’ve gone to for many years. It’s so expensive now and the quality went south. Highly recommend Yan Yan!

2021-12-13We were extremely disappointed with this restaurant. We ordered two items off the House Specials. They were fair. When the bill came one item was $5 more than it was listed on the menu. Isnt this illegal?? When we questioned the waitress she said the prices had gone up. The staff was incompetent. People who were seated after us received their food before us. We were given another customers credit card. When we tried to use our debit card we were told their were no funds on it. We called the company which said this was not true. We will not visit this restaurant again.

2019-06-12The hot and sour soup and the egg roll was the highlight of my meal. The Kung Pao chicken had barely any chicken in and was super bland. The rice was even worse. Asked for lo mein noodles and ended up with burnt ramen. Absolutely awful!

2022-02-12Friendly enough but pretty sad place. One of worst sweet and sour shrimp I ever had. Even fortune cookie stale. Maybe hit it on an off Friday night

2021-12-05Yen Yen (Yan Yan) has become extraordinarily bland in its cooking. Breaded and deep fried items are thick and nearly indistinguishable from one another. A green bean chicken serving we had was flavorless, and spring rolls done in peanut butter were simply badly conceived and executed. I did like the pot stickers, the only item in our most recent order with any flavor at all. We used to frequent Yen Yen when our children were young and remember it from all those years ago as really good, fresh Chinese food. Really not so much any more.

2022-03-18Dinner was good. Beef satay wasnt at all spicy which was a little disappointing. Soup could have been hotter
