The Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center in other cities:
This particular Salvation Army is very run-down compared to other Salvation Armys. I went over there today at 5.:30 pm and they are closing in 30 mins. I got yelled at by the manager (I found out she is the manager later) when I wanted to go into one of the isles. She was cleaning up, I guess? She told me they are closing in 20 mins and I am not welcomed to go into the aisle she was putting stuff away.Nevertheless, I got a few things. One of the items that I found was a handmade frog figurine made of dried straws. It is different and for $0.97 cents. I decided to put in my shopping cart. When I went to check out. The person who was yelling at me was at the register and she was ringing up my stuff. When she saw the frog, she said the price was not right and she put the frog aside and did not let me buy it??!! I told her I want to buy the frog. She said the price is not right. I said okay. Then give me the correct price and I will buy it. She said she can’t make up a price at the register. I said but I want to buy it. Can you get the manager for me? She said, I am the manager. (she should be fired). I told her you can’t do this to a customer. I want to buy that frog. She said again, the price is not right. She continues ringing up my other stuff. I was in shock. I said to her, you want that frog yourself? She said what am I going to do with it? This is the manager who worked on June 27th 2020. Totally rude and not friendly.
I absolutely love it when I have a little spare time to make it to this Salvation Army prior to work. It has an amazing selection of ties, coats, jackets, vests, boots, shoes, jeans, kitchen appliances, and furniture. What I also like about this location is that each item is well organized and decently priced compared to the ridiculous prices at the location in Morton Grove, which prices secondhand items like its a Ross location. There have also been select times when I came to this location with no intentions on purchasing anything, but just to look around at the items inside of the store. I find it very therapeutic to look at what most consider junk, furthermore I also tend to paint a picture in my head of the lifespan of the item, which clears my head at times.During my visits, I seriously have to set my alarm when I shop here because its easy to get lost in looking at every single item of interest. If you are looking for a good table, dresser or shelf your in the right place because they price these items at affordable secondhand prices.Thomas G
Found a Madonna that was part of a now lost nativity set. Asked a lady working there if there was the rest of the set. She tried to help me find it when she was called up front. Told me that she had seen the set but this piece got separated and she would price it for me. I went to check out ( with $50 of other items) and the cashier said no price- no sale. So I told her what the other woman had said. She asks this other woman who must be the manager. She says no. So I tell the manager that the other woman said she would. Now they all start speaking spanish so I won’t understand. After a while the answer is still no. She says there is a sign saying no pricing. I ask if it is because I am not Spanish because of the purposeful conversation to keep me out of it. As we left my friend said that the manager was also giving a woman with a headscarf a hard time.So I go back the next day hoping to find the Madonna. As I enter the store, there is a sign on the door saying no dogs. Well, right in front of me is a kid with a dog. And as we come in, there is the manager. I immediately think this woman is going to throw the kid out. Instead, she tells the other workers that it is her son and he will be in the store ( with dog?) until she leaves early at 1:00.She gets to break the rules for her but not for anyone else. Discrimination or ‘I get to do what I want and forget everyone else’????!!!!
Worst customer service I went there and i found this nice musical figure and it was $1.99 I was wowww not bad , but guess what when I get to the cashier ready to pay. This skinny old lady Hispanic told me that she thinks I was too cheap , she took item and refuse to sold to me because it was only $1.99. I notice this other lady went through the same thing with some shoes. If this skinny old lady is so good pricing items she shouldnt be working as a cashier... I hate that I waited for two minutes and she decided to not sell the item to me .
Place is clean but some clothes are hung too high and your neck hurts after searching awhile. Men pants are not labeled with size and length on price tags like store on Devon in Chicago. This place has no dressing room so it’s ridiculous to try on clothes over your existing clothes. You need to come dressed with t-shirt and boxer/tight for easier try on.
I found a bag that I’ve been looking forever for. Well just see the strap to make sure the fit tag came off. I realize tag list items cannot be sold, but putting a tag on adjustable portion of the item is the most silly thing ever. This is all after waiting in line for 20 minutes.
Absolutely the worst customer service. They were so unaccommodating when I was trying to arrange a pick up of a donation. After them randomly assigning me a date without my permission, I finally corrected them settled on a date and was given a huge time gap of 8-4 for a pick up time. I was willing to sacrifice my Saturday to have this furniture picked up. It is now 7:53 pm and they still havent arrived. No phone call or email to give me aheads up about the status of my appointment. Sacrificing a potential 8 hours of my day is bad enough but now it is going on 12 hours. For a company that relies on donations, they arent very friendly to those who are trying to give them things for free. Its really unfortunate that they have made this donation process so horrible; I would love to give more items but I dont want to go through this again. Ok, long rant over!
When you look at the prices on many items at this store, youd think you were shopping at a high-end resale store where they actually care about the merchandise they sell. While I prefer a cluttered Salvation Army full of interesting merchandise to the bare bones Arlington Heights store, this location is a disaster.Filthy, dirty, beat-up shoes that should be thrown in the trash are being sold for ridiculously high prices. Some are ripped, others are missing insoles, chewing gum and mud caked on the bottom of soles, and really disgusting foot BO permeating the entire shelf area! They sell crappy, small stuffed animals for $2.97 and up - far better ones are a mere 50 cents at Goodwill. A gently used Michael by Michael Kors winter jacket for just shy of $50 - are you kidding me!! This is a repulsive, overpriced store with no redeeming qualities.
I always want to this place but one thing is bothering me the women in the cashier shes rude with the customer and dosnt respect them I dont now what her name but I think all people will new her because she always didnt respect the people when she talk with them .But othet employees are nice
I bought a cheap table at a reasonable price since I only need it for my room to use for studying. The sales people were nice, and the cashier where I had the transaction informed me that they cannot bring the table in my car, they will only carry it outside at the backdoor and the rest I have to do it myself then I said thats okay. So I drove at the backdoor, saw men unloading furnitures from the truck and I got off the car. I found my table and the guy who just brought it there. Only when I realized that the table is too heavy for me to lift and I cannot do it on my own, the fact that I am petite young lady. So I asked somebody for help just to lift the table up with me, but this other big guy was saying sorry that he is not allowed to help. What? Poor lady no one would even want to help me, I didnt ask them to do it themselves, I was only asking to help me carrry it with me. The ending, I did it alone. I had no other choice but to suffer, but I survived. Salvation army help many homeless people, and feed them, but it is only limited to that. In asituation like this they cannot. Its ironical to think.
Its a thrift store, and its got grit; not sure why people expect to be walking in and out of a department store. Hell knows Im poor enough not to. If you cant handle a Sal Army, maybe you shouldnt be there. Its actual thrifting for people who actually NEED those prices; not whiny, entitled, overprivileged suburbanites who got tired of going to Goodwill. Sorry @Graxia, but your need to compare your mundane strife of lifting something thatll actually help you lose a pound off your bloated ego to the struggle of the homeless and at-risk is just gross. Next time you complain about being a poor little lady for buying something you can barely even carry into or out of your car (why didnt you get a pickup receipt for the next day if its such a melodramatic ordeal?) and NOT have someone immediately jump to your whims, remember that its just a taste of what being TRULY underprivileged is like.
It has changed for the worse, there are too many people walking around, your employees need to be humble with customers, all their help comes from donations, two employees at the same time was downing a customer, it does not the that on a Sat., in front of a long line, the customer walked out, also, same thing on Clybourn, I go there on Mondays for a lot of years, you cannot get help to your car, I am 68 years old, I had to push a table to pay and then to my car, where is the courtesy and thankfullness.
The worse place!!!!!!!!! Every Saturday they supposed to have certain color tag on sale, but yet if get there at 5:00 pm knowing that they close at 9:00 pm you’ll find most of the workers going isle by isle taking down everything that has that color tag on sale!! And they’ll be yelling to each other’s from one side of the store to another the worse place !!!!! if I could give this place 0 star I would but that option is not given here
I dropped off a car load of cloths, furniture, sporting goods on Saturday, 10/10/15. I asked the attendant where I should put it, he wasnt helpful and seemed upset that I was even there. After I unloaded everything from my car by myself I had to ask for a receipt when he shouted at me that theyre right there . Not a person a business should have working with donors or customers. Needless to say, I wont be back.

2021-07-09I was a regular shopper at this store - I would go in at least once a week. In the past couple of months the store has become so filthy and disorganized that I can no longer shop there comfortably. They trash cans overflow, the floors have not been swept in months. Clothes litter the isles, shelving is broken; the whole store is disgusting. I would avoid if possible.

2022-05-31The shelves seem empty yet full...... they have tons of glass wear and clothes but other then that its a roll of the dice like most thrift shops. They have golf clubs but nothing animal related.... pretty much hit or miss . The prices seem decent maybe a little high for stuff thats been donated for free to help people less fortunate..... if they actually priced this stuff to get rid of and help people then maybe a higher score for me ....

2022-04-14I am a teenager and everything was for old ladies and old men. There wasn’t a single piece of good clothing. There is also no fitting rooms which is absolutely ridiculous especially because it is a thrift store. Do not recommend at all I would rate this zero stars if I was able to

2018-11-03I find some of the best housewares, kitchenware, books and DVDs at this location. The employees are generally pretty nice. Stays open until 10 pm. Closed on Sundays.

2021-07-27Nice variety today and fair prices. Would prefer a little cleaner store but it may just be older. I was a little disappointed in the small collection of t-shirts. Do they not wear them around this area? People were exceptionally friendly.

2021-03-16I always find something here. This is a well run and organized store. You wont find many items that are broken or that should not be sold. Its clean. There are items that make it onto the floor without pricing. You will not be able to purchase the item even if there are other identical priced items. They are not particularly helpful here. It feels like an adversarial relationship between customer and staff. That said, its Salvation Army. They do good works beyond the stores and you are keeping useable items out of the landfill when you shop here.

2020-02-05It was first time here. Yes, it was a mess and yes, some pricing was high, but I loved it! I found so much clothes. Name brand. All my 7 shirts for 99 cents and 8 pants for 3.99! It was such a steal. Even Goodwill doesnt have pricing so low. I would go back see how my second time goes.

2020-06-16I found the store to be clean and organized. Clothes were sorted well and hung nicely. A number of items still had the tags on. I found some great buys, and the person who was at the checkout was friendly and proficient.
