One of the best features is the food. Order sushi ahead of time for a party or order at the store in person and you are assured of a fresh and tasty meal. If you want to prepare the meal yourself their fresh fish is FRESH. After remodeling they have a rather extensive refrigerated/frozen section with a variety of goods. The balance of the dry goods has much of what you need around the kitchen.
I typically come here for the food court, which has a fine selection to choose from. The prices are fair, the food is delicious, and the wait time is acceptable (~10 minutes). They renovated and reopened their dine-in section as well.As for the grocery portion, its passable. There is a noticeably lower selection to choose from. For example, produce is scarce, there is a lower selection of instant ramen, and theres not as much rice as other Asian markets. There is also a small selection of meats, and what is offered feels to be at a higher price than other markets in the area. The freezer section, however, is where its at. Front to back double row of freezers has a good selection items. If youre looking for fresh ingredients to cook for maybe 2-4 people then itll do. But I wouldnt expect you to cook up Christmas dinner with whats here.
Smaller market for various asian goods and foods as well as a hot bar/kitchen where freshly made dishes can be ordered. Variety of goods to purchase is quite extensive, even including sushi-grade fish that can be used to make sushi/sashimi. While I didnt get anything from the kitchen, many were sitting in the dining area enjoying their food and there was even a line of people waiting to order from the kitchen.
Small Japanese market but carry all you need.Honestly the pre made food is much better than Mitsuwa and the staffs 10x nicer.I like the unique sushi rolls they have.Their selection is not as much as Mitsuwa but they have all good brands and quality of produces and meats/fish is better imo.Especially the sashimi, it’s looks and taste more delicious than Mitsuwa. They also have a hot food area but I did not try it but it looked good.
The restaurant food.So bad!So, very, very bad. What!?Impossible!Youre wrong!Anyone that has eating here before will strongly disagree.I know this place. Been eating and shopping here for years. Many of the staff know my face and greet me throughout the store. The remodeling is wonderful, and the increased stock is welcomed. We will shop... but the restaurant food is now uneatable.Honestly. Not just a funky taste. Uneatable. The food is now so bad, I dont miss the restaurant, and might even consider trying big Ms unruly food court again.I dont want to write, unfortunately its changed, because the desire to not eat there is all that occupies my mind.Sure, many people eating here seem to be enjoying their food. And, maybe not all the dishes have been ruined. But, the last three times, the food was bad.Ill bet something big has changed in the kitchen and they are aware of it. Ill bet they lost experienced staff.Okay. No problem. But, why serve food that you know is not prepared properly? And they know. After telling the staff the miso soup was bad, they said sometimes new people put too much miso in and it gets too salty.Huh?Why are they serving that to people?Thats the problem in a nutshell. The biggest change in the restaurant. Quality control. They are serving food thats prepared improperly and no one in the kitchen cares.I know their Gyudon dish well, having regularly ordered it for years, and taken extra home.It was bad a few weeks ago, but yesterday, the rice in my Gyudon was soggy. Wet soggy. And the sweet salty sauce tasted watered down. Why?After all the years of delicious flavor, and consistent prep, how can you now give this quality to people? The California Rolls were sloppily made and falling apart. Huge cracks, not tightly packed as in all the years past.Normally, with a restaurant I know and love so well, I would just say something to the owner rather than write here. But, the food has become so bad, and has remained this way over weeks, that certainly they simply dont care anymore. Because, if they did, that quality of food would long ago have stopped coming out of the kitchen. In any case, the food has gone beyond bad, into the horrible. The restaurant staff is now also hit or miss. The expediters are still the most friendly and patient, but, some newer staff members are a bit more abrasive. The store staff on the other hand are great. They will go beyond anything to help you. Japan quality style and customer service.
My absolute favorite place to eat in the Chicago/Wood Dale area. The people and the food are top notch and the prices are fantastic. Casual atmosphere and food court decor. Honest and friendly staff both at the register and the food counter. Ive eaten almost everything on the menu at least once now and I can definitely say its all delicious and not Americanized in the least. I keep coming back every time Im in town.I havent purchased anything from the main grocery store section so I cant speak to that, only the food court.
A smaller alternative to Mitsuwa but dont expect similar food standards and cheaper price tag.We came here on a Saturday noon, there was a good crowd here but by no means beyond capacity to the point that we cant find seats at the food court. We ordered three packs of sushi premade on the side on the aisle leading to the food court and a bowl of Tonkotsu ramen. The sushi were decent, the sashimi inside were fresh and not too small, but not generous. Overall the sushi were quite small and nothing that stands out.The Tonkotsu broth in the ramen was terrible. I felt like a ladle of cream was dumped in and it was like a milk pasta broth with miso and pork. The other ingredients were subpar too and I dont bother writing them as the star is bad enuf already.Im giving them a 3 stars because I think I will still come back and try other stuff like the bento bowls and rice menus which are something different from Mitsuwa and perhaps these are the better things to order. Also their supermarket is small but really good. They even have small Daiso section and lovely Japanese soft toys.
An alternative and modest Japanese grocery store if youre looking for authentic Japanese products as well. I usually go to Mitsuwa marketplace in Arlington Heights, IL but sometimes last summer there would be a line and you would have to wait so long and then on top of it if you run out of imported Japanese rice its a first come first serve so they dont call you back at Mitsuwa. Do try their fresh sushi also its very good compared to what Mitsuwa Market has. Mitsuwa Market is a much more larger conglomerate since its somewhat Nationwide but I like this place better and I had seen a billboard advertisement before about this place and last year was a bucket list. I was very pleased or happy to discovering this hidden gem Japanese grocery store when theres no other alternative around the Chicagoland area in Elk Grove village near a strip mall between Arlington Heights Road and Higgins Road. If youre also looking for Japanese authentic ingredients or products this is another alternative place to go to beyond popular Mitsuwa Marketplace. I was impressed and liked that they take the extra mile when youre looking for a particular item when theyre out of it in stock they actually call you back. They go above and beyond for service. Reason for 5 stars
Amazing setting in a compact store! The food court was really well stocked with all types of options for food and method, be it pack it yourself bar, restaurant menu, or sushi. Fun 2$ section in back of the store, and a few aisles of home goods. Produce and meat options seemed substantial; not extensive, but varied enough.
I come here 3-4 times a month at least. BEST sushi I have tried. My favorite menu item is the Oishii combo, but sometimes I like trying other things in the menu. Today I tried the poké bowl, which turned out to be surprisingly good. The quality is incomparable for the price and the service is fast and polite. Totally recommend for an original japanese meal.
We went for the annual blue fin tuna carving and it was incredible!! The tuna was so fresh and amazing. I was really impressed with the food and the store. It takes a lot for me to go to another Japanese market with Mitsuwa being just down the street. Tensuke manages to do just that. I might not go there for Ramen but I would definitely buy fish and sushi there. I really appreciate the fact that they will sashimi any piece of fish you buy there for free and then give you an ice pack to keep it cold when you check out.It was an all around great place. Ill definitely be back.
This rating is for the food court carry out. I actually remember tensuke food court to be quite decent, thus i missed it while being quarantine. However am disappointed this time. The sushi rolls i have ordered are falling apart and not to mentioned it is done very unprofessionally, the pieces are uneven and seaweed for some are shorter than the rice. Tonkatsu for one of my orders is overburnted it is dark brown and it tasted old as if it has been recooked. The ginger salad dressing for one of my order is dried up I believe it is old as well. Due to this experience i am not planning to go back for awhile. Since the quality is inconsistent.
Decent food at decent prices. The food court offerings are not going to blow you away but for the money you cant beat it. The real treat is in the market section. If youre looking for a wide variety of fresh fish this is the place to get it. In addition youll find lots of unique Japanese products ranging from movies to kitchen gadgets to dry foodstuffs. Highly recommended!
Sunday early lunch visit. We had Katsudon, it came with miso soup and salad. We also had the Chicken karaaga plate, it came with miso soup, salad and rice. Both dishes were very good, the serving size was quite large, we ended up taking half of each home for dinner. We were early and had no trouble getting a table and the food was ready in short order.
Great place for getting those one off, special import items...along with a very good in house sushi counter. Obviously be prepared to pay a slight premium on imported items. Their meat and fish section though is quite reasonable and similar prices to bigger chain stores.
Mom and pop shop with a great restaurant and even better fresh rice balls. Since its just down the road from Mitsuwa, this has become our new go-to for Japanese food when we dont want to handle the crowds. I highly recommend the seafood soup (not fishy at all, just lovely salmon/shrimp/tofu in a savory broth), as well as the curry rice, which comes as an optional side with several of the menu options. Instant favorite.
It was hard to find a good place which has takoyaki. Few places in the area do not have it, and the ones that have it -it doesnt look good. The same thing is with ramen and sushi. I came across this place and wanted to give them a chance. Ordered takoyaki and Godzilla roll set. It is not enough to say it was AWESOME! Way more than expected! I got some spring rolls extra. Next thing that I will try is definitely a ramen. Especially now during this Corona situation when places that are open are limited. Delivery is not expensive like in some other places 🙄
Best Japanese food at a great price. Not a fancy place but authentic and well done. I like the attention to detail with nice plating of $13! lunches. Store employees are nice fast and helpful as well. The remodel seems to be coming to an end and there is more seating for the restaurant so you can count on finding a seat now I think. Prices havent gone crazy yet and the food is still the same nice quality. The remodel did not make the restaurant fancy so definitely still a casual place, not something to impress someone with unless theyre a foodie.
I have to change my review after coming here several times. They are very abrasive to their customers. Its impossible to customize anything. Curry rice charges an extra $3 for a pork cutlet. You want a second cutlet? Youre out of luck. You want curry on the side to add it to a dish-- not happening. You want just shrimp tempura app... Nope. Will have to seek out another place that listens and evolves. Very disappointed.
Id rather give a 2.5 stars because Im so disappointed by the sashimi I ordered, but to be fair, the market itself is pretty good (though way smaller than Mitsuwa) and the sushi rolls/bento boxes are okay.I uploaded a photo of their Sashimi Deluxe Set which was $19. I dont know if its because of corona and finances are tight, or because I ordered take out, but look at the size of the shrimp and the squid in comparison to my fingers. Im a 51 petite Asian girl. FOUR slices of squid should NOT be the size of three of my fingers, especially at the price and quality of fish. If I ever visit Tensuke again, I will be buying my sashimi from the market section only instead of the food court.
This is the BEST sushi Ive had in the entire city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Ingredients are so fresh, everything is so awesomely prepared and their spicy mayo is literally to die for (get a side of it with your sushi, youll love it). The store itself is so cute they are renovating right now and cant wait to see what they do with it! Always stock up on my Asian ingredients from here and they were one of the only places to get masks during the pandemic.
My family and I have been going to this place since it was called true world. The food court is our favorite place to eat in the area. The food is fresh, authentic, and reasonably priced. We have tried just about everything but our favs are the grilled saba and sushi. The saba set comes with grilled saba, rice, salad, and miso soup all for $8.95. I have them add teriyaki sauce on top of the saba and that kicks it up a notch.Give the Tensuke food court a try. Make sure you have someone save a table it can get busy during lunch.
Delicious and at very reasonable prices with fast delivery! Heres is a picture of the meal we just ordered and ate and it was quite satisfying. Picture from left to right is the Salmon Crunch Roll, Spider Roll, and my personal favorite on the far right, the Dragon Roll which was awesome. The above average quality with the very easy and quick doorstep delivery is what especially pleased our office. This is extra important to note since even Jimmy Johns doesnt deliver to our address. Will definitely order again!
This place was a pleasant surprise. Its a nice Japanese market that is well stocked. The restaurant in the back also offers a very nice array of Japanese dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. I thought the sushi could use a bit more of the sushi-zu, but it was good. The ramen was also pretty good. Only a few things would be needed to up the rating. 1. A proper ramen egg with a molten yolk 2. A slightly thicker tonkotsu broth. The flavor is there, but it doesnt have the high gelatin content youd expect from a tonkotsu broth. Still all in all it was worth the trip and the cost.
It’s a grocery store, but I mainly go for the food court.I eat here because the quality of the fish is amazing. But also try the tempura, noodle dishes or curry. It all tastes like real homemade Japanese soul food. I’m so grateful this place exists. Also the prices are the best for Japanese food in Chicagoland.Don’t miss out on the small Daiso section or the beautiful kitchen utensils and flatware for ramen bowls.Eat here. Shop here. You’re gonna love it
Tensuke Market is very authentic Japanese food that is always tasting really great. I enjoy their variety and quality of food. When ordering an online order the only have one delivery driver so unfortunately you’ll have to wait longer than expected. That I would say is the one issue. The customer service is always helpful and really seem to care about their customers.
I like Japanese supermarket very much. There are not many items but the store is expanding recently. It seems that there will be more products. I am very looking forward to it. I like Japanese goods and food very much. The staff is very polite and friendly. The store also has gathering activities. You can exchange cash for shopping, and hope that there will be more and more Japan and Taiwan snacks and groceries in the future.
This Japanese market and food court is my go to place for amazing (and affordable) Japanese food staples. When Im in the area, I get my fix of soy sauces, seaweed wraps, candies, cookies and baked goods I could only get Japan when I traveled. Unlike the larger Japanese supermarket right down the street, I find most of the prices are reasonable and I get a little more for my dollars. It doesnt hurt that the food court food is amazing! I highly recommend this store.
This place is dope! For a place thats 1-20th the size of super HMart it has a much bigger and better sushi grade fresh fish selection. Pretty decent pre-made sushi which is rare af. For an very modest sized Asian market its surprisingly awesome. Oh and theyre remodeling now in Nov 21 so its getting bigger. Not hmart bigger though lol
Love this store. It has all you need for Japanese cooking (including my must-have natto beans).Eat at the food court here before you shop. It’s delicious, authentic Japanese food.Hard to go wrong with either this store or the one down the street. I come here often because it’s less crowded.
Its currently having some construction done inside, so its not the prettiest Ive seen it, but dont let that fool you! The selection was very decent for shopping, and the sushi counter is wonderful! It has some of the best prices for some of the best sushi Ive seen in the area. We make a trek out from beyond the suburbs, about an hour, to get there and it is absolutely worth it! Ive seen much fancier and avant-garde sushi places that try to bring you in with the decor, and well this place is plain and and is partially a grocery mart, it is fantastic. You absolutely do not need the bling to get good take away sushi. On top of that, well the grocery currently doesnt have the best selection due to some limited shelving space due to the construction, they do have a very serviceable selection that you can use to keep stocked up on the basics for cooking your own cuisine.
Just stopping by checking this Japanese store, as soon as I got in I fell in love for it!💕 The store is super clean,Too many sea food that makes you wanna try it! Many products to adore and admire, Many plates to call gorgeous! The coworkers are friendly and they surprise me when they speak English!,So dont feel scared if you dont speak Japanese. I totally recommend anyone to come and enjoy the market 😉.
I tell folks that Tensuke is my happy place, and I mean it. I drive past another nearby large Japanese market to get to Tensuke. Come here for the best sushi, meals, snacks, Japanese foods, and best price on rice anywhere. So glad Tensuke expanded. Cant wait to visit when indoor dining opens back up.
I highly recommend ordering from their food court ! Everything is delicious. They are currently expanding their store, so its a little crowded inside, but Im excited for all the new options! They have a great fish selection and it is conveniently marked fish for cooking or fish for sushi.
The restaurant in the back here is some of the best sushi I have ever had. It is seriously amazing. The market is also a great resource for high-quality fish and other Japanese goods, but if Im being completely honest, I dont think Ive ever come here for anything other than the food court. Always clean, and service is always great. Definitely come here!
If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. We love the sushi from the back of the store (the quality seems exceptional, yet it is extremely cheap compared to most nice restaurants). The rest of the store is great too, with a variety of fish selection and Japanese desert goodies. 👍
Great place to stop for a quick bite while you shop around the market. Better tasting food (rolls; tempra udon, etc.) from Tensuke food market at much cheaper prices than some of the Japanese restaurants. The overall price on items (Japanese crackers; gift shop items, etc.) seem to be cheaper than near by Mitsuwa Japanese market, too.
Is hard to rate Tensuke. Do I rate it for the food court or the market...?For those who miss Star Market, this will resonate and satisfy that old memory. For those that miss Sunshine, this fills that gap nicely. My apologies, the above review is not accessible to John Q Public.Generally, you will find great prices here for similar, if not the same, products as you would down the road. For households that cook Japanese style meals daily, this should be your first stop. (Meaning you know what you need and it is not a tourist attraction)The food court is one of the best Japanese home style cooking in Chicago for my taste buds. I highly recommend it.However if youre looking for a bowl of great ramen, go to Torino. You will not be disappointed. (I gotta plug these guys... they are that good.)
Dont get me wrong - the pre-made sushi there are delicious and fresh. The problem I have is that unlike Mitsua, Tensukes sushis have a delicious added sauce that has chemical preservatives and that causes huge pressure headache for 10+ hours if you are sensitive to those like I am.
I go to Tensuke for the sushi in the food court. Always fresh and delicious. The menu is extensive and full of Japanese delights. Ambience is hopping busy! The staff is friendly, and the store is filled with interesting Asian products. Sometimes I bring home sushi fish and Kobe beef. Its a great lunch destination!
Why does one pay $20 for sushi? Because there is a lot of preparation that goes into making sushi. The fish and different ingredients have to be just right, fresh, and ready to eat to avoid eating bad fish that can potentially make you sick. How much does it cost for ingredients to make a plate of sushi? maybe $4. So again, why does one pay $20 for sushi? I have been coming here for 20 years and never had too big of a deal with sushi, the sushi here is usually very good. Today I received bad sushi. The salmon was dry, the tuna was chewy. The avocado was hard. Did Tensuke get a new sushi chef? If I wanted bad sushi, I can make it at home by myself for $4. So why did I pay $20 for bad sushi? Please tell me....? I am waiting for your response???
Better food than Mitsuwa (not factoring their food court--just the grocery store itself). Mitsuwa used to be great, but over the years theyve become too commercialized to the detriment of the fresh food. What Mitsuwa has gained over Tensuke however, is more Americanized merchandizing of the aisles themselves. Tensuke has the distinctive Asian merchandizing/displays that feels more authentic and better mirrors supermarkets in Asia, whether thats a pro or con to people. I like it.
Fresh sushi made to order that you can enjoy Eat in or take out. Ive never had a bad roll of sushi from tensuke. The workers are always friendly and will gladly assist you if you cant decide what you want. You can order at the counter or you can write your order down on the leaflet to the right of the register and hand it over to the cashier.Seating is a little limited right in front of the kitchen but there are some bar stools and and an adjacent eating area.
Nice store my family has stopped off in Chicago for a number of years now. Only place we can find dried persimmons my dad likes. The small food court is nice and has a good variety and selection. Only complaint is that the sushi is assembly line sushi so it isnt the best I have had, but it is still good. But, my favorite thing if I can actually time it right to get it. Is the soy simmered squid.
Comfy, honey, local Japanese grocery store. Good selection of prepared foods made every day and an excellent place to do your weekly shopping. Everyone is friendly and the place is meticulously clean, hard to do with a small grocery with lots of traffic. Good selection of fish for sushi/sashimi as well as for cooking, very fresh and a small but decent selection of meat. There is a small restaurant in the store and they do a great selection of dishes.
Best sushi in the area! A little nerve-wracking the first time as it’s in the back of a Japanese market. Just keep walking straight and you’ll run right into the counter to place your order.Staff is always helpful and the sushi always fresh with a beautiful presentation. Can’t wait to get back for my Godzilla roll and Big Dragon roll.Oh, and try the ice cream if you still have room!
This place is my first choice restaurant. Of all restaurants I know I favor it most. I never miss an opportunity to go to this restaurant. when I feel like having a superb dinner, this is the place that comes instantly to my mind. Great and many types of food and a large menu.great staff, and pleasant mood. Not less important, the cost is good. I tell about this place with great pleasure.
I was in town for the week and love trying out sushi places. I ordered online and picked up since I was staying just down the road. I ordered a few rolls, but the spicy tuna roll I ordered was missing and a plain salmon roll was in its place. I was a little bummed because I love spicy tuna and really missed it, especially since I paid more for spicy tuna. I would recommend but maybe just check before driving all the way home.
Overshadowed by nearby Mitsuwas Market. Tensuke has all the essential cooking ingredients, a charming cache of cups and dishes, as well as fine little restaurant and grab and go food. The onigiri is much better here than at Mitsuwas and I the pork cutlet sandwich is no question better than those at Hippo Bakery (also in Mitsuwas).Sushi made to order and a collection of fresh baked goods are available as well.
Maybe my favorite new Sushi spot in the burbs? This is about as traditional as sushi gets around Chicago. Delicious rolls and the Nigiri is fantastic. Fish is very fresh. Reminds me of One World Market in Michigan (also a great place which places the emphasis on food quality first, ambience second. Too many places do it the other way around). Will definitely keep coming back.
While it may not be as aesthetic as Mitsuwa, they have a very good selection of items considering the smaller size of the market. The onigiri are delicious and they do have a larger tableware selection than Mitsuwa now. It really is a gem. I cant wait to try more take out from here.
Great sushi bar in the back of the store. Also a great place to shop for Japanese items like mochi ice cream (red bean) is our favorite. They also sell great looking fish for at home preparation, or if you want a really fast sushi fix without the wait they also sell premade sushi boxes. Ive had the restaurant and also purchased the to-go premades and Im always satisfied. This is a regular for me and is in the elk grove area.
First, the sushi Café is the best Ive had this far from the ocean. It tastes so fresh! Head and shoulders above sushi station. The fish and meat selection is surprisingly diverse considering the size of the shop, and most items look like they havent been frozen (very important for flavor and texture if youre making your own sushi at home). As far as the dry goods go, they have a good selection, but its not mitsuwa. I highly recommend this place.
Most authentic Japanese market and food I have found in Chicago area so far, they have real Takoyaki and Yakisoba which are not easy to find here, the market is exactly like the konbini in Japan and the food tastes exactly as in Japan! Im so in love with this place it has true Japanese vibes
My favorite sushi and Japanese food place. They have expanded their food court which is nice. You can order from a big range of good Japanese food or pick up some of the premade stuff. They also sell Japanese good you would find in a grocery store there. The customer service is out of this world. Check this place out, its a favorite with the locals.
Buying fish in the grocery store part is top flight - the freshest possible with an excellent selection in the mornings. They even have fish heads and bones for the real cooks who make their own stock. The restaurant gets 4 stars for a solid budget range menu and 3 stars for decor, but it is very clean. The best is to get your food to go and have a picnic by the elk across the street. The whole place is very welcoming and accessable, dont let being next to a bait shop upset you.
I love this place! I refuse to buy seafood or fish anywhere else at this point. Ive never encountered fish this fresh. The homemade kimchi is to die for. Sushi is delicious as well. Store is ran with alot of care. I feel confident in the products I purchase and to me thats priceless.
This place is so awesome. We order from here all the time. It’s amazing how good the prices are for the quality of food you get- everything is fresh and very good. The man from Tensuke who delivers the food to our house is also so nice- we love seeing him! They even throw in some freebies sometimes. Simply the best.
Went here after striking out at Mitsuwa. Thisplace is much better, it felt more homey and comfortable than at Mitsuwa. The lady that was working was very friendly and helpful while being busy. For a small place they have alot of choices. The fish looked very fresh. Will definitely be going back for shopping, and to try the food court.
Tensuke typically has an amazing selection of premade, to-go food items. With hot bars being a health risk, theyve decided to increase the variety of grilled fishes, sandwiches, and bentos available for grab n go.Nice folks work there, and the produce is always fresh.
Best fish market in Chicagoland you can buy your own sushi quality fish here and cut it at home, they also have fish you cook and some really nice meats sliced so thin you can almost see through it. I get all my fish here for years it never has a smell or odor super fresh.
One of the best Japanese grocery stores in the area. Although it’s way smaller than Mitsuwa, but the qualities of the products that they carry are comparable to Mitsuwa. The price is almost the same or slightly higher, but they give you stamp card. Once you reach certain amount, you will get a gift card to spend at the grocery store. I love buying fresh fish and sashimi here. My husband and son love their sushi. We also enjoy the food court, food selections are amazing. They serve ramen, udon, soba, sushi, and more. Price is reasonable. I highly recommend the sushi, especially the party tray.Overall:Price:$-$$Service: 5starsHighly recommend it!
Mitsuwa is not the only Japanese market! In fact, Tensuke has a food court too! Grocery is also cheaper! You can also collect membership points that can be redeemed in cash value in future purchases! And the seafood herr is probably the most fresh compare to any other market.
Best Japanese food in the whole world (and I’ve been to many different ones in different countries). People are respectful and food is super flavorful. God bless these people, they are amazing! I’m a huge fan of this restaurant and every time I go to Chicago, I eat there ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Think of this place as a mini Mitsuwa, but just because it is a small Japanese supermarket, doesnt mean they dont have awesome stuff! It isnt too busy here, but there is a constant flow of people. Their food court is pretty small but its great and the sushi here was very good too. Ive only come here for the sushi and food court, so I cant speak on their selection of groceries. However, if youre looking to avoid the dreaded congestion of Mitsuwa this is the place to come to.
In Japan, fish mongers are a good place to get sushi. They have good quality sushi at a reasonable price in order to advertise the fish they sell. Tensuke is definitely in that mold, as the quality to price ratio of their sushi is better than any other sushi place in the Chicago area.
Great fresh fish and fresh sushi Japanese market and 1 restaurant food court. Best part about your trip here is If you want super fresh sushi for lower than restaurant price, then this is your number 1 choice - come here. I recommend not getting the ramen as I found it below average, but the sushi is truly special and the appetizer and curry here are solid options. There is a Daiso section (Essentially like a Japanese dollar tree but might be 2 bucks now) in the market toward the back corner that is owned by same guys that own Hello Tokyo in Des Plaines (a large Daiso store). The rest is a pretty standard small Japanese grocery store. Your next option for Japanese grocery is down the road a mile at Mitsuwa. Its much larger and has a full food court with multiple vendors and more options. However you may find some things at each place you prefer over the other. Visit both and you will see what I mean.
I ordered small tray of chicken karrage and tempura tray for new years eve party gathering. After picking up food and arrived at party, I was so disappointed and got upset. Chicken karrage( Japanese Fried chicken) was just pure garbage. It was black and brown colors and dried out completely. Tempura tray was acceptable at best and had three pieces of small size shrimp and rest in vegetables. Just wasted $80.
The sushi is fresh! I absolutely love the happy hour specials! I get the katsudon every time I go here. There are lots of good things to shop for here, especially in the Daiso section, where everything is $3... Some items feel like they should be cheaper, but the rest of the items are almost a steal! I love to stock up on furikake and bonito flakes.
Excellent Japanese food in a deli style eating area - sushi, sashimi, noodles and much more. Quite busy during lunch time for take out or eat in.Full supermarket with a good selection of sundries, fresh vegetables, seafood and canned goods.Staff is helpful pleasant.Great place.
Super sad. The quality really fell off in the last few years. The donkatsu and sushi used to be great 4 years ago. I came back to the US after living abroad for 3.5 years, and was shocked at how bad the donkatsu and maki rolls were. The rice used for the maki had a mealy bad texture. The Donkatsu breading was falling off and it looked more like annover fried schnitzel than Japanese Donkatsu. Sadly, there’s very little competition in Chicago for Japanese and Korean food. So even good restaurants eventually start slipping on standards and quality.
Food court is simple and decent. The grocery store cashier was very unfriendly (or maybe she only Spanish) with no greeting or thank you what so ever. Might as well have an auto checkout lane. The difference from a few years ago is staggering. Japanese staff is almost non-existent and the quality of service definitely reflects it in every possible way!¡! Steep decline in service and customer care.😕
You could drive right past this little store/food court and never know it, but you definitely should not miss it. There is a hot bento bar and a cool food case for grab-and-go with a great selection of foods. The real star is the food court behind the grocery store. A great menu, well prepared food and prompt service. Ramen options, udon, sushi, etc. The store is small but well stocked. Mostly dry goods, but some produce and a good selection of meats/seafood. All great quality. The building is bright, clean and the eployees are very friendly too. Always seems to be quite busy, but the food court gets the orders out quickly.
Friendly small Japanese Market offer variety of Japanese Ramen, Sushi, and grocery. narrow isles in the grocery area. the Ramen was very plain, it seems the broth is straight out from package. I saw a lot of white powders in the broth that havent dissolve. average price.

2022-07-01WOW WOW WOW!! I absolutely LOVED THIS PLACE! some of the best ramen and sushi in the Chicagoland area.... loves the spicy miso ramen as it was flavorful, the perfect portion size, and came with the best toppings and a side! for what you get, this place is really cheap in comparison to others. service was great and food came out quickly!

2022-02-20A hidden gem with the most delicious food. Love how much food you get with one entree, most come with a choice of rice, seaweed salad or spring rolls.Their menu has ramen, sushi, poke bowls and small appetizers that are perfectly filling on their own.

2022-02-16In the absence of my favorite sukiyaki this winter, Ive been ordering ebi tenju every time I visit the food court. Consumer prices have risen in the wake of labor and supply shortages the last 2 years, of course, and Tensuke is no exception. Still I continue to go. Even as Ive noticed for a while now that the shrimp they have been using for the tempura has shrunk considerably, still I continue to go. However, yesterday, they started using shallower bowls, and consequently there is much less rice than there used to be--less than half! I dug my chopsticks into the rice to take my first bite, and there was the bottom of the bowl already?? I brought this to their attention, and the kind server graciously gave me more rice. Yes, they did present my bowl with more pickled garnishes than normal, but that doesnt make up for them trying to get ahead on both ends: raising prices while also cutting back on the rice and shrimp. Each shrimp yesterday was only maybe 2.5 bites, when in the past they used shrimp that took at least 4 bites to eat. They are also very crafty about using batter that make the shrimp look bigger than they are. I cannot shake the feeling of being cheated, and I have been a loyal customer for over a decade. Tensuke is about to go on my list. You know which one.

2022-03-05Photos are from the food court they have...first time and absolutely loved it or was really hungry lol. The market was small but full of variety; food, house supplies like wall decor to dinning ware and small toy section. Will definitely be spending lots of money here on snacks.

2022-05-30So disappointed that we did not find this place earlier. As a sushi fanatic, this place definitely definitely provides an experience that is different! We ordered an assortment of nigiri sushi’s as well as a roll set and ramen. Although we love Mitsuwa, it’s so wonderful to have another authentic Japanese dining and grocery shopping experience.

2021-10-03Best place to get a casual bite of sushi! Pick up is so easy and quick and the grocery store is fun to walk around if you need to a wait a little. I love to get their king salmon or tiger roll, as i find the seared salmon adds such a good flavor! Prices are reasonable and quality is always good. I highly recommend checking out Tensuke if you’re in the area!

2022-03-27One of my all time favorite places to grab a bite or get some fresh sashimi and other groceries. I end up usually buying some sashimi and ordering some food from their food court as well. My go to is the scallop sashimi, which is silky buttery in texture, yes its raw and its amazing. It goes well with just a dip of soy sauce or if you are a spicy mayo guy, feel free to put that on your scallop as well. I also get slices of salmon and tuna as well. The prices are a little higher than one would pay at maybe Mitsuwa, but thats bc they actually take the time to put out a quality sushi product for the consumers, whereas at Mitsuwa, your sushi and sashimi options in the convenience section is not always the freshest tasting, although hard to detect, since they mask their not-so-fresh sushi with spicy mayo, green onions and sometimes sesame oil or toasted sesame seeds. Tensuke Market is a place that has integrity and will always serve you high quality products.BTW, for food court they serve so many different things, you can get sukiyaki, or if youre in the mood for curry they got an amazing curry pork cutlet plate, their ramen is also pretty foodgasmic. They also can make specialty rolls that you may not find in the grocery store section. I apologize for the pics, not the best, but I have gotten a lot of my food togo during the pandemic, but they have started to let ppl dine in again and have expanded that area. Its pretty nice. Thanks for feeding us in these hard times. Some ppl dont understand that food costs can go up and have unrealistic expectations, but I would hope that 99.9% are pretty understanding of the situation. You are worth the 2 hr drive each time I go!!! Thats how bad our sushi is in Wisconsin.

2021-08-14Very cozy and cute market. The overall products are Japanese and they have some Korean products as well. They have restaurants at the back of the store, while the front is the market. I got to purchase some cute items. I loved the stationary section that they have! The market is still going through with being remodeled. But it was still a very pleasant experience and the cashiers where friendly and welcoming. The bread that they sell is fresh and was very delicious. I bought a tuna Mayo onigiri as well and the flavor was on point.

2021-08-31Great Fresh Sashimi, Nigiri, poke 🥣 & hand roll sets. One of my favorite places to get fresh 🍣 . They also have a great Asian market in the same location that I shop in regularly, for all your fixings to make anything on the menu @ home. I have been going here for about 5 years now. Truly a place you should try if u like 🍣
