Visited the new location for the first time a few weeks back. I was a long time customer of the old store, Champaign Surplus, and was excited to check out the new store(s). I was extremely disappointed. The old store had charm and a unique atmosphere that is severely lacking at their new location. The old store felt so genuine and home-grown; rugged, as an outdoor store should. The new store feels like your run-of-the-mill chain store. The selection has severely dwindled to the point that it makes it difficult to shop there. The old store had oodles of brands to make sure you found the exact piece of gear that fit your needs. The new store carries only a handful of brands, with only a select few items from each brand. Ill probably be back, but I certainly wont make the trip for this store alone.
Great buying experience at Rugged Outdoors! I bought a Kuhl fleece lined Luna coat. The sale price was considerably less than anywhere else I looked and the service was unmatched. The website was easy to order from. Shipped the same day and I had it in three days with free priority shipping. The coat is a beauty! Highly recommend Rugged Outdoors and Kuhl products.
Great discount on smartwool, especially after Christmas, which I wasn’t expecting. Picked up 2 merino 250 base layer zip ups tops @70 each. Well worth it being that smartwool’s site didn’t have any discount on price, as Rugged Outdoors did. I look forward to shopping at Rugged during the winter because they do have the rare items that may be sold out at times also. And the sales are great ! My package was delivered very quick, within 3 days.👍🏽
Horrible sellerI bought from them on Amazon and looked all over for this item. I submitted my order and paid with a valid credit card. I waited one week. NO order. I emailed them-no answer. I contacted Amazon only to find that they cancelled my order without communicating with me. When I filed a complaint with Amazon i was told that the reason for the cancellation was because it was not longer in stock. This is not a reputable business. No business treats its customers that way!!!!!AVOID THIS SELLER
Had an issue in which I needed to cancel part of my order. They got back to me the next morning, and told me they couldnt cancel the whole order because they can not cancel part of an order. I then ordered what I wanted. They gave me a 10% discount on my next order for my trouble. The customer service people are nice and helpful.
I have been coming to this store for over 30 years. It had a corner on the outdoor market for a long time. The owner carried many items for outdoor adventure that you could get no where else. Now the store is under new management. A lot of the gear has increasingly been replaced with expensive clothing that you can purchase other places. This makes them less and less useful IMHO. But where they really lost me was during my last encounter. I purchased a Pistil hat from them. I like the hat well enough although the price was quite high. 2 weeks after I purchased it the top unraveled and now there is a large hole in the top of the hat. I did not have my receipt, my bad I know. But I thought hey, I paid top dollar for the hat maybe they will stand behind it. I go in and show them my problem and the manager says no receipt no return. I try to persuade in a reasonable way stating the price and the short duration of ownership. She tells me that there is no way to tell where I got the hat. At this point she is bringing my character into question. So anyway there is my review. High prices, fancy cloths, poor customer service, like radio shack -less relevant than ever. Better off going to Gander Mountain, Dicks or Field and Stream.
Largest selection around! I am getting into backpacking and sport climbing. I have been looking at gear online in many stores, for the type of gear around it is hard to find. For the gear I need its the only place around that even offers most of it. The staff is very knowledgeable of the gear to help you out. Also have to mention on larger items they will price match what deals you find online! So business can stay local instead of Amazon or other places you have no idea where, win win in my opinion.
I was extremely amazed at the quick service/delivery! I placed the ordered the next day it was shipped and I received it the following day. The item - Osprey 65 Viva. The price was the cheapest...I have been searching this item for nearly a week and this was the cheapest that I could find. I am very pleased with the item and service. Thanks Champaign Surplus Store
I was looking for a Patagonia vest to wear this winter since its been so cold. I found exactly what I was looking for from Rugged Outdooes, on sale! It shipped very quickly and was delivered very quickly as well. I recommend them, especially if youre looking for Patagonia or similar products .
Used to be a higher end amateur outdoor outfitter. Focused more on trendy brands these days. You can still get some fairly good gear here, but you pay a premium for the local availability. They are moving...so its unknown whether this review will be accurate after the move.
This place is a bit pricy just like most any outdoor store but the staff are helpful and the opportunity to try things out before buying them makes the store much better than buying the same stuff online. Champaign surplus also becomes involved in the community by planning group camping trips which is a great opportunity to meet new people, who are also interested in outdoor activities, from the surrounding area.
Its a nicely decorated store. The staff is not friendly we were in there for over 20 minutes no one even greeted us. Everything is pretty overpriced. If you really want to try on things you could go there and try them on and then purchase them for a fraction of the price online
The staff treat you like a thief from the moment you walk through the door, dont seem to know much about their products and dont seem to care.An attempt to bring this to a managers attention only ended up in them stating they decide who is a potential thief arbitrarily.Im a middle-aged professional, not a thief, and my phone can record conversations. So much for spending money locally, I found what I wanted online much cheaper and humiliation free.
Champaign Surplus was always a good outdoor gear outlet with some neat military surplus inventory and memorabilia too. I say was because I believe this weekend is their last in this location and under this name. They are in the process of liquidating their stock and moving to 2017 South Neil Street in Carriage Center under the new brand Champaign Outdoors, where they will no doubt hold on to their status as one of the best outdoor outlets in the city.
I do really like having a local supplier of quality outdoor gear, but unfortunately, Champaign Surplus has made some changes which arent the greatest. This store used to be a 5 star shop, but has now reduced their selection, and dropped many brands that I really like, including Prana. For other products, like headlamps, they only carry one brand in store which is frustrating.Still, they try to keep new and innovative products in the shelves
I wouldnt really classify this place as an outdoor store. It is mostly a clothing shop with some clothing labels that are associated with active lifestyles (North Face, Columbia, etc.) But this is no REI.That being said, I am very disappointed in how they are carrying less and less in the store, opting to spend more time on their online business. I went in today looking for Smartwool socks. They used to have a whole wall of these before. Now, it is just a small but and they only had a couple of pairs in me size. And none of those were the quality backpacking socks or knee socks that they have always carried. If I wanted to ship online rather than support a local business, I would. But now it seems that I have to take my business online anyway. So I guess I might as well but from REI our Amazon instead.
Stopped in to shop this week. Saw the No Gun Sign posted and left. I will no longer shop there. I do not understand why business owners fail to understand that we law abiding citizens are not the problem. The guy who is going to be a problem will ignore the sign and do what they set out to do. If you are going to put up the No Gun Sign you might as well post a sign that says, We are in business but do not want your money
You will pay top price for outdoor gear. I would like to shop locally, but they do not offer much incentive. Not a real good selection of higher end gear. The staff is not very knowledgeable either, most of them are not even outdoor enthusiasts. I asked for a footprint for a specific tent, and they looked at me like I was speaking french. On the up side the store does alot for the Boy Scouts, and thats a really good thing.
Its really not surplus - its a high-end outdoor sports and lifestyle shop. Theres a little bit of actual military surplus gear in the back room, but its not the main focus of the place....and Im cool with that! They have about everything you could want for outdoor sports and rec, including plenty of things you never knew you needed so badly.Other writers are correct: come here prepared to spend!
Wonderful locally owned, not-a-chain store. Some GI surplus, and also a WAY good selection of contemporary sporting/outdoor apparel. From hats to shoes and everything in between. The staff members have always treated me well. Wash that corporate funk right outa your hair and visit Chapaign Surplus.
Crawled over every inch of the carriage center and couldnt find this place and it is well past when they were supposed to have opened in the new location. Tried calling and got a machine asking for an extension to the party we would like to speak with. If your moving stores and are behind or out of business put up a message or have a real person answer the phone to help with directions. Spent 40 minutes looking... Really disappointed cause I really need a place like this.
I went in to get a pair of Tevas. I picked them up, and proceeded to shop the rest of the store. The entire time I was shopping I felt like a deer being stalked by lions, like they thought I was going to steal something. It made me mad and I will *not* be back and I intend to tell everyone I know how awful they treat customers.
I have gone twice to look for a winter jacket but I never find my size or they directly have little material. They dont have much variety, the place is not very big. Something I dont really understand is that they have a tent set up, it would be better to remove it and put more shelves with clothes, which is what will generally sell more. In the end I bought the jacket elsewhere.

2022-01-30Fantastic experience online shopping experience with this retailer! Comparative price, super fast shipping, and the merchandise are top quality! Unfortunately I have to return the hiking shoes I purchased due to the sizing. But Ruggedoutdoors provided such excellent customer service making the process painless. I will be a return customer.

2022-01-23This store is just a shell of what it used to be when it was downtown and carrys only what they think will sell and not what would be better. In essence, they dont carry the high end stuff anymore and they dont carry the cheap army surplus anymore either. Theres literally no reason to drive out there unless you forgot to order something online.... Lastly, there are picture up from when it was downtown and actually was good. I know brick and mortar retail is hard these days, but the concept just isnt here.

2021-10-06Really great service. I love the brands they carry. A lot of my wardrobe is outdoor clothing made to withstand the elements. From pants and shirts, jackets, hats, gloves, etc, they have a great selection. Give their clearance rack a look, too. Theres some REALLY good stuff in there.Huge shout out to Ryan and Kirsten. They were both super helpful and its really great to know that Rugged Outdoors stands behind the products they sell. I had a jacket that didnt quite work out the way I wanted (no fault of theirs!!) but they made sure I was a happy customer. Polite as can be. Theyll treat you right! Its nice to have a local store that carries the brands that I need to fit my outdoor lifestyle. You have a very satisfied and long term customer.

2021-06-25Bought some fantastic hiking boots online from these guys because they had the best price. Beat all the big box stores which is unusual for smaller operations. Very happy with the experience, shipping, packaging ect. Will shop again for my outdoor needs.

2020-09-19I have gotten some great deals on North Face coats with Rugged Outdoors. They ship quickly and run a great business. I keep ending up there and finding the best deals. When will I learn to just start there?

2017-11-02Ive been coming here regularly while Ive lived in Champaign. Outdoor stores vary quite a bit, but I can say this one is one of the better ones I have seen. The staff is very helpful, but willing to back off and give you space if you want it. One of their under-appreciated services is the price match policy, which will match for other outdoor retailers (not sure the exact limits) but I have used it a couple times.I really enjoy the events that they hold throughout the year. I am a regular at their pint nights and sidewalk sales.

2017-12-01I was wary buying at first with little reviews, but one of my best purchases! I got something off of the website as a Christmas gift, and it is awesome! The product came much earlier than expected (ordered on Monday night, received Thursday morning) and it was very true to the picture on the website! Very impressed and super happy with my purchase! Will be sure to check here again when needed!

2019-01-05I purchased a womens Patagonia 3-in-1 parka from Rugged Outdoors and couldnt be happier. My parka is a beautiful mahogany color and the quality is superb. The fit is tailored and the parka is very warm and versatile. Shipping was a little slow as it took about 10 days for me to receive my order but the fabulous price I was able to get for my parka from Rugged Outdoors definitely made the wait worthwhile. Thank you!!
