It’s quite obvious they are only replying to positive reviews so here’s the honest truth. Please save yourself a lot of stress and do not come here. Unless you’re a client 35+ who can keep filling their commissions every month or two they will not care about you whatsoever. I started coming here around a year ago for a basic hair color and the process went fairly okay . The stylist was friendly enough so I decided later that year to go back. This stylist was stand-offish and I was willing to pay whatever it took to the agreed upon look. She still rushed through it and while it was nothing like what we talked about, I settled. I’m fairly not picky when it comes to hair dressers but if you do choose to come here go to the same one every time, it’s the only way you will truly be taken care of. The last straw came last night when I came in for a simple trim. The hairstylist didn’t even introduce herself just threw me into a chair. We talked about what I wanted, a small trim on my hair of about 2 inches and long layers. I even showed her a picture. My hair was very long and she walked to the back of my head to say “I’m cutting it here” and tugged on my hair where I couldn’t even confirm the length. She then went about chopping random pieces of hair until about 4 inches of it was gone and my hair looked nothing like either the picture or what I said. There was nothing I could do at that point and she asked if I wanted it dried, clearly showing she didn’t want to. So I payed (where the front desk was even more judgy) and left. I have never written a google review but wanted to make sure no one else ends up spending over $40 to have their hair look like it’s been chopped unevenly with safety scissors by a rogue kindergartener. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so hard after a hair appointment.
Bummer. I hate my haircut. The experience was uncomfortable because she randomly brought up my last visit in December (when I was trying go blonde) as if she was throwing shade that I am now brunette.. She sped through my haircut so fast and I have tried to give it a chance for the last several weeks. I thought it was just me having trouble adapting to my short hair, but there an extremely uneven bob with weird shelving. I wont go back, Ive given the salon way too many second chances.
Laura did an awesome job on my hair! It was my first time seeing her and I absolutely love my highlights. She was extremely professional and knowledgeable. The salon was extremely clean, and they are taking many precautions to keep their clients safe. Will be back again!
Niece (15) decided to cut her own hair which is extremely curly. She had done the bottom half when I got home and asked me to make sure it was even. When she let the top half down I decided we needed help. Called Modern Wave saying I had an emergency. They scheduled me same day about 3 hours from call, then called back saying they had a cancellation could we come in sooner. Amber did a fantastic job styling and making the experience wonderful for my niece. Its a great salon, with wonderful stylists and customer service is fantastic!!
This was my first visit to Modern Wave and Im looking forward to my next appointment. The staff was very professional and friendly. Isa did a great job on my haircut and my first facial was incredible! Amanda was very knowledgeable and informative.
I have been a client of Modern Wave for many years and totally trust that my experience will always be wonderful. The salon is always very clean and sanitized which is obviously important during this pandemic. The entire staff are always very friendly and helpful.
I have been coming to Modern Wave (every six weeks) for over 20 years and have never had a bad experience with a color, cut or style. My stylist Donnie is the absolute best. Despite moving out of Cary, I still travel 40 minutes just to get my hair done. Great salon with outstanding personal attention!
Wonderful, comfortable environment. Every person Ive been to had been wonderful. Amber is great for hair. Bree did my brows and they havent looked this good in years. I have never enjoyed going to a salon as much as I love modern wave.

I had a great experience with Stylist Sara. I had an appointment for highlights and had brought her a picture of how I wanted it done. She did a great job and I was very happy with the way my hair turned out. It take a lot for me to trust anyone to do my hair- but she does such a great job that I have no problem making small changes to my hair as long as she does it!
Katie did an excellent job on my haircut and she listened to all of my preferences. The salon is super cute and tidy, the staff is friendly, and they stock a full line of Aveda products. I can’t wait to try some of their other services!
I had a fabulous first experience at Modern Wave with Kristy! I feel like she took the time to get to know me to ensure that I received a cut and color that I would be thrilled with. The hair wash was so relaxing, and I left the salon feeling pampered. I will definitely be back!
This is a great place! The staff is welcoming, friendly, and personable. The overall atmosphere is refreshingly down-to-earth. My stylist, Karen, is talented and kind. She remembers my preferences and is a delight to converse with. Im so glad I found this salon!
I have been going to Modern Wave for about 3 years working with Allison. My mom was a hairdresser so I am very picky about how my hair is cut and what shampoos I use. I changed salons 4 times in 9 years living in the city. Without question Modern Wave is far better than those salons. Consistent quality, nice environment, and most importantly good recommendations. I recently had a work conference in Vegas and wanted something shorter than usual that was business professional while maintaining my natural wave. The cut and product suggestions were perfect. Allison is a rock star!
Ive been coming to Modern Wave for almost 6 years now, and I dont trust any other salon with my hair. This time I had Amber as a stylist - I always enjoy talking with her and she always does a great job at cutting/styling! Would recommend MW to anyone.
I have been going to Modern Wave for about 11 years now and I have never left unhappy. I have had a variety of services - eyebrow waxes, haircuts, up-dos, highlights (full and partial), perms (yep...), and full color (from blonde to dark brown...and then back again). The customer service is great and all of the stylists are kind, welcoming, and professional. Even if its your first time coming in, you will feel like you have been a long time patron. Sarah has been cutting and coloring my hair for years and is wonderful, but anyone you are seated in front of will do a great job. I promise youll leave feeling refreshed and pampered!
I just moved to the area and chose Modern Wave Salon based on reviews and am very glad that I did. Brie did an amazing job with my color and trim. She was very knowledgeable about all of the products without being pushy in any way trying to get me to buy them (although I did get some because of how great my hair felt and looked) She was so friendly and interesting that I actually will look forward to going back in a few weeks for a touch-up.
When I first walked in the woman at the front desk was not friendly. As a new client I would have thought theyd be far more welcoming. I got a sense that she doesnt care much for working there.My stylist, Amber, was amazing. She gave me the best pedicure Ive ever had....very relaxing. The only thing to consider is the pedicure chair is not made for tall people. Your knees are bent at an uncomfortable angle. Amber also did a great job with my hair. She listens to what you request and is careful not to cut too much if you have long hair. Shes also very friendly and will chat with you.I was checked out by the same woman who checked me in, Laura, and again she seemed disinterested. Its like she just goes through the motions. The owner should consider putting a friendly person at the front desk. They have a 20% coupon offer on their website which I printed and presented before paying. When I handed it to her she waved her hand in the air to express she didnt want it from me. I still got the discount so Im not really sure why the site tells you to download and bring it when its not necessary. I also didnt get a receipt so Im not sure what I paid for on each of the three services I had done. Since their pricing varies depending on which level of expertise you get, it would be nice to know what I was individually charged.Not sure if Ill go back. Amber is definitely worth going back for but Id like to feel welcome from the beginning to the end....at least thats what Im used to from other salons.
From the moment I called and requested an appointment for the very next day, everyone was extremely accommodating and made sure I could get my hair colored before I left on my trip. They even called me back and offered an earlier time (which did work better for me).Janet colored my hair and did an incredible job! She did better than I could have imagined on my own or could even put into words for her!Awesome experience from beginning to end; It always is!!
I was in Wisconsin at a restaurant when a woman asked me where I got my hair done. She just loved the color of my hair. I told her about Modern Wave, Bridget and Aveda products. Hats of to Modern Wave! I wish I had discovered you years ago. I remember seeing a sign at a former stylists chair that said, Im a hairstylist, not a miracle worker. Yes, I believe stylists at Modern Wave are miracle workers especially for seniors like me. My book club friends are asking for information about Modern Wave. Hope they visit you soon.
Okay today was my 3rd time to get my hair done here and i was happy about the service my hair stylist was amanda she is very nice and she knows what she doing and she charge $60 today I meet different hair stylist col criste i have to explain many times to her what i want she didnt even do proper job and she charge me $90 when i ask why she charge me different price she side she take more extra hour to do my hair i tell her i am coming with the same hair i didnt use any extra hair 😳 this just for style hair

Best. Haircut. Ever. And Im picky about my do! Britanee was so thorough with her consultation and had great ideas! Im so happy with my hair....it lays great and it even passed the next day test where the salon freshness is gone and youre left with your actual hair LOL. Brit was amazing - she knows her stuff!!! Cant wait for my next appointment! Highly recommended!!
I’ve been coming to Modern Wave since I moved here back in 2005 (I was 9 years old) and have always had nothing but amazing service and beautifully done work on my hair and brows. These girls know why they’re doing and each of them have some pretty mad skills. Even when I move away I’ll still choose to come here. Definitely give these rad ladies a shot if you haven’t already (also if you haven’t by now what are you even doing?)
Amber, my stylist is terrific. She listened to the hair concerns I have and works with me to make my hair lovely. She introduces me to products that work well with MY hair.

If impeccable cleanliness, friendly staff, and a dynamite hair designer is important to you, you will love Modern Wave. The shampoo chairs are divine -- auto recline with heat and massage while you get your hair shampooed. They have beautiful and quiet spa rooms in the back, and the restrooms are almost too pretty!I trust my very thick and curly hair to Karen. But Ive had blow outs by other stylists and theyve all done great jobs. Karens color skills are awesome, as are her styling skills.The prices are very reasonable considering this is an Aveda Salon.Go, youll love it!
Always great! Top notch! Been a client for as long as I can remember! Its comfortable and professional! Had 2 beautiful brides too who had hair and make up for two of my girls and myself too!
I have never written a review good or bad, Im more about referrals and telling others how awesome of a job a place did or sucking it up if it was bad. I am not happy with my hair after going back yesterday and getting it fixed. I spent a total of $245 for basically a trim ( which now on my black hair does not look good. In a ponytail it looks like I took scissors and cut my own hair in a straight line). I got my hair colored and it turned out copper). I went back and now have black layers everywhere trying to cover up the copper. It took a long time to rid of red in my hair. I can deal with the hair color after the second visit (suck it up) but now I will have to pay someone again for the 3rd time to fix my cut. Also the second visit should have been free to fix my copper hair! Not $90, especially when I came in the first visit saying I wanted Ash dark brown or Ash soft black maybe with some highlights.
Love Bridget! Her color/cut services are excellent.Excellent place to receive Aveda beauty treatments for your hair.I also have had facials with Adi using their Aveda products, and Ive been very happy with the treatments. Feel brand new!!!Highly recommend it.
Modern Wave looks like any other small town shop but the stylists really know what they are doing. I have had manicures, pedicures, color, haircuts for myself, my husband and my daughter. All have been done very well and at a great price. Janet is amazing and my family and I will continue to go back to her. Great place!
I went to one of the older ladies to get my hair cut for the first time here and although they have a nice store I was disappointed. She was continently trying to sell me the products she was using and did a terrible job cutting my hair. I asked for a small amount of layers and she completely messed up my hair. It was completely not what I asked for. There was huge chunks of long pieces and short pieces. I will definitely not be returning and don’t recommend to go here.
Love this place!! Ive been going there for about 4 years now and Kimber is by far the best stylist Ive had in a long time!! Ive had many compliments on my color and cut. My mom and daughter are clients as well and we all have received great cuts and styles. You will not be disappointed!!

I love Aveda products so this is my go to hair salon. The stylists are always friendly and open to your ideas. With Covid, they are fantastically organized and very clean. Highly recommended!

I made an appointment online. When I got there there were two women at the desk I tell them my name and that I have an appointment. One of the women bursts out laughing and turns away. Ok what? Rude. She tells me I dont have an appointment but there is someone available. I tell her I made an appointment but whatever. The woman who cut my hair was friendly but didnt talk much. I told her what I wanted but I dont think she was listening well. Didnt end up liking it. I tipped then left. My husband and son come here with no problems and always have a great experience though. Friends also rave about this place but when I went they were unprofessional, rude, and didnt like my hair sorry.
I was searching for a new salon close to home after the salon I had been going to in Crystal Lake for a couple years suddenly closed. I was so impressed and happy with Modern Wave, I wish I had been going there sooner. All the staff and stylist are so friendly and do a great job. Ive had facials and haircuts and love the Aveda products.
Friendly, efficient, experienced and always willing to work out an appointment no matter how late in the day I call. Greeted with a smile and always offered a cup of Aveda tea, the Modern Wave team works together to help on your color cut or style should you want it. Wonderful group of hard working ladies!!!
They take shampoo to a new level! Massaging shampoo chairs that recline!! OMG!! Every little detail has been considered to make your ordinary hair cut or color, EXTRAORDINARY! Loved it!

Please consider revising your plastic bag upon check in policy. I am all for COVID measures and i respect the temperature check, questionaire, hand washing, waiting in car etc. But putting my scarf in a plastic bag is over the top. What is the difference between my scarf and my sweater or pants or shoes? All of them touch surfaces. Plus if i get a wax or facial witout a mask on...is a scarf in a plastic bag really necessary? Please think of the waste....plastic bags are very hard to recycle if not imposible. Thank you for reading!
I have been going to Modern Wave for a couple of years. I have seen a few different stylists and I always have a great experience. Everyone is so nice and inviting. And all the stylists have listened to exactly what I want.
Christy is always professional and knows exactly what Im looking for in a hair style. The entire team at Modern Wave has put a lot of thought and effort into opening back up, lots of safeguards and clear guidelines.

I have had great experiences at Modern Wave both with haircuts and manicures. The facials and massages along with the steam room are also wonderful. A great all around spa get many different services.
My mom has been coming here for 9+ years, her hairdresser has been Dani for that long. She has been losing her hair for a long time and Dani has kept perming her hair.Many other hairdressers have been telling her that they would never do that - it further causes hair loss. Dani then raised her prices, knowing full well that my family has been going through money problems.My mom has since found out that perming causes hair loss and there are many other things that Dani could have done other than permed it. Dani scammed us, big time.Go ANYWHERE but here if you care about your money.

Very bad customer service. I called in to make an appointment for hair color on Thursday which is today at 11 Am. When i talked to the girl she said i was scheduled Fri. That was not what we talked about over the phone last night. The two women on the reception are rude. Very rude! Not coming back on this place anymore.

Best hair salon around all the gals there feel like family they do beautiful work and they take good care of me always I love the women that work here I would never go any place else in particular Bridget has always been my first choice but I met a lovely gal Rachel and between the two of them they take care of this mop on my head I always walk out of there feeling like a million bucks!
I was expecting to have outstanding service after reading these reviews, but it was just ok. My nail technician didnt talk much to me. I also ended up getting charged more than what was listed on their website for a no chip mani.

2022-02-25EDIT: Modern Wave reached out to me in response to the review below. They recognized the fumbles throughout my experience and acknowledged that they were investigating what went wrong. They were genuine and sincere in their apology, which counts for a lot in my book.--------I visited Modern Wave on a recommendation from family after moving back to the area. I have very curly hair, which I mentioned when making the appointment, so that there were no surprises for the stylist. I went in for a cut and root touch up, and felt very comfortable when I got to my appointment. The stylist and I talked about how my curl pattern hides the true length of my hair at several points in the appointment, and the reference picture I showed her was from a previous haircut of my natural hair. I said I wanted a shoulder length cut when worn naturally, and the stylist said she would start with a conservative cut so we didn’t go too short. I’m not sure if it was inexperience or a misjudgment, but the final cut barely covers my ears. I paid and left (my mistake), and immediately cried in the car. I have worked very hard to embrace my natural curl, and now find myself ashamed of it again. After a week of unsuccessfully trying to find a style that worked, I called Modern Wave on Feb. 15 and asked to speak to the manager. My goal was to discuss what had happened solely so that it didn’t happen to anyone else. I was told a manager would call me back, but it’s been three days now, and I haven’t heard anything. Everyone gets a bad haircut at some point, but I (and the family that recommended me) are shocked that a salon wouldn’t try to make it right when contacted.

2022-03-13Great experience. Today I had a color correction from Artic Fox purple rain. My stylist, Lindsay, helped me to achieve a gorgeous chocolate brown with golden lights. Lindsay was very friendly, professional, and incredible at her job. Im glad I did my research on highly rated, reputable salons. Modern Wave is where its at.

2022-03-28I called today for a haircut and blowout service and was able to get in same day.. and I was lucky enough to have gotten Alison as my hairdresser.. she did a fantastic job !!. absolutely perfect I love when you find a stylist that gets you.. already made my appointment for my next cut .. thank you Modern Wave for taking me on such short notice and thank you Alison you have made my life a heck of a lot easier .. see you in 7

2021-07-19Ive been to many salons in the area and I have never had better service than Modern Wave. My stylist Karen is very experienced and does a fantastic job on my thick wavy hair. I dont ever need to return for a fix and it grows out beautifully. Their Aveda products are also natural, vegan, and cruelty free which is very important to me. Everyone is so nice, the salon is super clean, and very efficiently run. I will only be getting my hair done here. Thanks girls!

2021-08-15Alison listens and is intuitive. She gave me exactly what I wanted. My hair is fine (and not in a good way), but she didn’t try to make it into something it’s not, or give me a high maintenance style that I couldn’t replicate. So happy with it! 😊

2021-01-05I just wanted to stop by and say thank you to the girls at Modern wave from the receptionist who took my frantic call to Katie who saved my head! This weekend I bleached my own hair and quite literally destroyed it. I was in complete shock as my hair started to fall out in chucks (Dont do it yourself, leave it to the professionals!!!!!) and then to a crazier shock when I realized that most hair salons were not open on Sundays! I was so lucky to be able to find this salon and also lucky to have been able to sit in Katies chair while she dealt with a disaster she had no idea she was walking into. Katie was patient, reassuring and kind as she took off almost all of my hair from the severe damage I had caused. I walked out in complete shock from the haircut as it was drastic but so necessary! I have now fallen in love with my new look (slowly but surely) and I cannot thank Katie enough for helping me in my craziest time of need. I highly recommend her for haircuts and color as she will walk you through everything with an incredible amount of knowledge all with a huge smile on her face. Thank you so much Katie! 2020-08-08Visited today for the first time for a haircut. Amber cut/styled my hair & it’s easily hands down the best haircut I’ve ever gotten! Amber was extremely professional, personable, and just beyond wonderful! Everything was perfect from start to finish. She also suggested some product for my hair and I’m so glad I bought it because it too is great! After this flawless experience I will never let anybody else cut my hair again! I would absolutely recommend her specifically & this business to everybody!
