Everyone liked the food, although the service was a little unpolished and for breakfast I would expect it to be faster. Also, coffee was not good. Otherwise, the menu is very creative and has a lot of options, like 2 different Shakshukas, croque madame, or crab cake benedict. Go here if you want some interesting food, but dont expect flawless service.
The pleasure for today was Mid Kitchen in Evanston. I went here today because Yelp said it was New and Hot! I did think it was Hot as Im trendy but certainly a little warm inside this morning. I read a few reviews with a few complaints about service not the food. I had no problem with either. I talked to the manager. He said they had only been opened a month. Only a month?? Well of course there would be some problems because they were still working things out after their opening but nothing that was horrible from my point of view. The food was pretty good. I ordered 4 things total. I had the Chicken & Waffle, Classic Pancakes, Jasmine Tea and a order of pork sausage.First the Chicken and Waffle. It was ok. A boneless pretty thick chicken breast over a Waffle already with syrup. If I could suggest a few changes the first would be to NOT put syrup on a person Waffle. To me this is a personal thing. Some like none to a lot of syrup. I think this place might be getting orders back if they continue this path. What would be better is providing one syrup and ASKING if more is needed. I needed and got more syrup but Im an easy less picky customer. The next would be season the chicken a little more. It is the savory & sweet combination that makes this dish work wherever it is made. The chicken had a great crunchy coat but no salt, no savor! Not bad but certainly could be better. The pancake were interesting. I expected a traditional stack. I got 5 cakes about the size of saucer plate in diameter. Now this is not a complaint it actually was a pleasant surprise because I can individualize each cake to how I want it. There was no butter served with this although I felt it should have been so thats something for them to think about if they are not doing so or if it was just an oversight while I was there. I started eating them and they were pretty good A my intention was to just eat one and save the rest for later but I ended up eating all but 1 and a portion of another pancake. I just got full! Between the chicken and waffles most of the pancakes I eat and the delightful jasmine tea that I turn from hot into cold I filled up pretty good.I did miss that they had a nice selection of Teas at the counter. Had I known that they had some different types of Teas I would have ordered something different then Jasmine. When I went to the counter I noticed they had a white strawberry tea. I was disappointed I didnt know about that cuz I would have definitely tried it. Oh well maybe something to look forward to next time because there will be a next time.As I was enjoying my food the couple next to me was enjoying theirs as well and then ordered some sausage of course I didnt know what it was when I looked at it. I asked him what was it and they told me sausage. Then I asked was it pork sausage and they confirmed it was pork sausage. But it wasnt your normal pork sausage. It was kind of like the sausage you get in a role where you make your own Patty and I like that so I made myself have room for a little sausage patty. You get to with an order and I ended up eating one it was very tasty but it could have used a little bit more sage in the mixture. I suppose they make their own because I was reminded that they make their own fresh chicken breast for the chicken and waffle everyday by my server. It reminded me of when I used to buy the roll of pork sausage and make my own pork patties when I was a kid. Those two would be misshapen and also very tasty. This place is pretty good. Its certainly worthy of returning to to try something else on their menu. The atmosphere is nice, the soft music they play is very pleasant. I look forward to doing that and I would recommend this place to anyone willing to try something else little bit different.
What a nice experience. We were pleasently surprised. The previous restruant was a favorite of ours, so our expectations were high. The new decor was cute, plus the added pads to the bench seats were a plus. As for our food, we were pleased. My husband ordered the chicken / waffle, which was his first time ever. I was hesitant with that choice playing it safe with poached eggs salmon over muffins with holidase sauce, which eased delicious. As for my husbands chicken & waffle, that was over the top excellent! The chicken was the most tender and moist I have ever tasted. Combined with the sweetness of the waffle, this dish is the star! Cant wait for our next brunch!
Amazing vegan and vegetarian friendly food. The prices are amazing for the amount they give you if Im being honest. Went for breakfast and got the avocado fries, buffalo cauliflower, and eggs Benedict. The most impressive dish was the buffalo cauliflower because of the buffalo sauce actually having spice and brightness to it, the breading was phenomenal because it still had a crunch and was not soggy. Avocado fries were a light appetizer but still creamy which nicely contrasted the crunchy breading.
I love this place! Best breakfast that I have found in Evanston. I get the classic Benedict every time and it’s perfect every time. Everything is well-seasoned, the ham is delicious, the hollandaise sauce is luxurious. The breakfast potatoes are made to perfection! I have caught myself daydreaming about them. So crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Everything you could want from a potato. Also, the coffee is good! And great, pleasant service!
Oh my gosh loooovvvveeeddd this place! It’s kinda tucked away in the corner so it’s a little hard to spot but it’s so good! First off super cute and fresh! It’s got almost a clean French feel but with a mix of food varieties. They offered toasts and Benedict’s, as well as some Mediterranean options. I ordered a shakshuka, which is poached eggs in a tomato sauce sorta thing. To be honest I’ve had better shakshukas in my life but this one was still pretty yum with the toast. They also had a lot of different Kombucha flavors. Over all a fun, but a bit pricey food experience. The room itself is pretty tiny so I wouldn’t come with a large group. 4/5 people at the max. But there’s greenery everywhere and the ceilings are high so it doesn’t feel crowded.I would definitely recommend trying this place out for brunch and good vibes! Thank you Evanston!
Honestly, it was just okay. My boyfriend ordered the spinach omelet and it was overcooked and not flavorful at all. The floors and seats were a little dirty, but they were pretty busy so I guess they didnt have time to sweep in between people? Staff was friendly, but Im not sure Ill be going back.
Nice little lunch spot for Evanston. I liked that they had sidewalk dining, which was great for a sunny Saturday. They had some vegan options, which were nice to see. The drink menu was a little strange, offering just a craft beer, miller, and miller light. Not that it should change, but I felt a little funny drinking a miller on the sidewalk around all the bougie people and shops nearby. Its a good first stop for something to eat before hitting some of the shops up the street.
The place is really casual and has some charm, but that’s about it. The floor in the restaurant felt like a sports bar - sticky. There were flies everywhere. The coffee was like tinted water and tasted odd, the Turkish coffee tasted like the machine they used to make it was moldy or something, and the pancakes had good flavor but were dry. It seems like you should only go to this place if you’re vegan since they have more options than others in Evanston.
Food was actually excellent. I had the chicken and waffle and it was crispy and satisfying. Why 3 stars? The tone of this establishment is uniquely sullen. The young men serving as host and waiter bordered on overtly hostile. The quality of the food was meaningfully undercut by the intense feeling of being unwelcome.
We went here for brunch yesterday and it was the perfect little spot! I chose it because there were so many gluten-free options and they have a wonderful variety of breakfast and lunch to choose from. I had the Avocado Benny with a gluten-free english muffin and it was delicious! Our server was incredibly kind and consistently checked-in on us. We will definitely come back!
Went here for breakfast for the first time this morning. It sure won’t be the last time. We were very happy with the service and the meals. Generous & tasty portions and beautiful presentation. We were three adults and 3 toddlers and they were very kind with the kids too.
Best brunch in Evanston! I dont know why there isnt always a line outside this place! Even blasé dishes like a breakfast burrito come alive in their inspired kitchen. The lemon poppyseed french toast is light as a cloud and an explosion of lemon on the palate. The Crab Benedict was perfectly executed. If you havent been here you are definitely missing out. (For comparison, Le Peeps brunch tasted almost like plastic ... Were here for just a long weekend and went running happily back to Mid Kitchen this morning for our last breakfast!). Also very tastefully decorated/nice atmosphere inside (which Fridas and other places seemed to lack).
Nice and peaceful on a rainy day. I was in around 9AM and it was raining so there was not a wait.I ordered some mimosas and chocolate chip pancakes. Solid price for the portions. The pancakes were very flavorful and not too sweet. The customer service was great and the staff was very polite and quick!Looking forward to returning for lunch
They give your reserved table away if youre not perfectly on time. So We had to wait for 5 mins for customers to leave. We had to sit by the open door as a family and out of no reason she didnt want to close the second door....it was -20degrees..we asked for another empty table, but she would only let 3 people sit there but not 4...???....food was ok but not worth the money at all. Its expansive! So for us it was not a nice Valentines Brunch experience.
Unacceptable customer service. The owner of this place rejected to take Avocado toast off the check because I have to have a reason in order for it to be canceled. He was also very demanding and stubborn, the whole time he was telling me that it is my fault 🤦🏻♂️Be aware, avocado toast consist of Bread, Avocado, onions, 3 cherry tomatoes lol. Super dry and not appealing sandwich. Also, when I was asking to exchange the meal no one informed me that original meal was going to be on the bill. ( unlike other restaurants - common sense )PS. Dear owner, I hope you can work on your attitude and don’t be that angry when people asking for favors.
The food was fresh and delicious. Need to work on customer service. They refused to compensate me for waiting twice to correct my meal. A simple request for extra potatoes was denied after an initial wait of 25 minutes and another wait of 10 - 15 minutes for the dish to be corrected. Told me Id have to purchase a full order of potatoes and I just asked for a few because I had to sit and wait for my food to be cooked twice. Not cool.
I just discovered Mid Kitchen thanks to a friends recommendation, and Im so glad I did! The service was excellent, and our server knew the menu well (something thats important for someone with food allergies!). Our meals were delicious, and the environment was cozy and comfortable. I cant wait to return!
We went in with such high expectations since the menu looked so tasty! When we walked in we were told we would be seated after our table was wiped off. One of the two employees on the floor cleared the table off of plates and then got distracted and left a ton of crumbs on the table. After about 10 more minutes we were seated by the waitress, but not given menus so we went and grabbed our own. Our waitress was great, but the other male employee seemed to be less attentive. Unfortunately after ordering 3/4 of us ordered egg Benedict and the egg came out hard and cold. Then, looking into the kitchen the prep cook wasn’t using gloves and was touching his phone and then the food(blegh). Most likely will not be going again.
Service, presentation, ambiance, selection and of course robust food flavor were fantastic and greatly appreciated. I hope their business can remain open and thrive during the Corona pandemic. We had the avocado fries with Sriracha mayo, breaded chicken and waffles, grilled cheese, original granola bowl, grilled cheese and marinara, salmon toast, bunless prime burger with fried egg, and avocado benny with hollandaise. Presentation, temperature and flavor were all en pointe!
We really wanted to like this place. The food was good and the atmosphere was nice, though a bit cold for an autumn day. I came in around 1pm and had to ask another guest if I need to wait to be seated. After being seated, waited another 10 minutes to be greeted. One of our guests asked for what we thought was a simple accomodation, but was met with an odd resistance. After some back and forth by the flustered server, the cook came out and rudely stated that they were too busy (half the restaurant was open and no one waiting for a table). No apology or attempt to reason.Ive worked at busy brunch restaurants and this was just disorganized and frustrating. There was 0 effort on the kitchens part to accomodate.
Our order comprised of Avocado Fries, Zoodle Bowl and Chia Bowl. The avocado fries were too salty for me and maybe would have tasted better if salt was sprinkled on avocado prior to frying. Zoodle bowl was pretty good but the Chia Bowl could definitely use some more flavors to it for the price!
Neither the restaurant nor the people know it by looking at it.I heard the thought after eating. When I first ordered and sat down, I was a little worried as I waited for my food to see the furniture that had been peeled off the leather. No worries, the avocado toast was absolutely delicious, and the fruit salad was fresh from the orchard. It is a restaurant that is faithful to the interior with good coffee and good service. This is the best restaurant for breakfast.

2022-02-07I went to Mid Kitchen a few days ago for a family meal and was pleasantly surprised by their menu having a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options. To start off with, they check your vaccination status which is greatly appreciated as this place is clearly popular and was the perfect amount of busy for a nice atmosphere. The tables where clean and the staff was extremely polite and helpful. They where able to make their Green Superfood Omelet with tofu and I already cant wait to go back and try more vegan items on the menu. Its the perfect spot to catch up with friends, study while drinking a tea, or simply people watch with some great food.

2021-10-04Mid Kitchen was an impromptu stop for us after a nice workout. I wanted to eat something not too light but not too heavy...some where in the mid.....wait! Makes sense now, Mid Kitchen...middle....basically you can fit something on the menu thats right for you! Hahahaha. I just made that connection. Anyway, we decided to sit outside and enjoy whats left of the weather. Our server seemed half awake. Good thing we didnt have much questions! I tried the vegan chicken and waffles. My first vegan order. It was surprisingly good! the waffle was fluffy and the chicken was crispy. Overall a good midday stop!

2022-06-11The food was okay. It seemed like I could probably execute the dish better if I bought all of the ingredients and made it myself. I had the vegan chicken sandwich, which was basically a Lightlife chicken alternative, w/ lettuce tomato, avocado, and sauce on a store bought bread. Same goes for the vegan BLT that my wife had. The seasoned fries were very good. The seasoning was slightly unconventional, which I liked. My omnivore father-in-law said his chicken bowl was decent. The service can be improved upon as well. My wife and in law got their food pretty quickly, but after they were halfway through their meal, the waitress noticed that Im without mine, and mentioned that she forgot to put my order on the ticket, so I only got my meal after both people in my party had already finished theirs. She comp us for my meal at least, so we left with a somewhat positive experience.

2021-01-22We have been ordering from here at lunch for work. Such a delightful find!! Food is fantastic, fresh, and plentiful. We have tried many of the menu options and have never been disappointed, only delighted! Regretfully we tear into food so quickly, most often we forget to take pictures. Included with this review are pictures of Avocado Bennys, Golden Bowl, and a side of bacon. If you are considering this place go ahead and order, you will not be disappointed!Update: Still fantastic. Customer service is aces!!! Adding pictures of Avocado fries and Buffalo Cauliflower, both delicious!

2021-05-18This is a low key brunch/lunch place that not everyone knows but actually has great service and food! They have a good selection of different items ranging from different kinds of eggs benedicts to protein bowls to steak and eggs. The Buddha bowl was especially a stand out dish because it’s very healthy and so flavorful, the falafel in it is the best falafel in Evanston.

2022-04-20I came here on a Wednesday afternoon. Upon walking in, it was a bit awkward bc no one was there to seat you. It was confusing to know whether I was going to be seated or if I could seat myself... the seating wasnt super clean and their seating spaces were limited and not very roomy. I ordered the chicken and waffles and was disappointed and unsatisfied with it. Ive had better waffles, they seemed a bit dense and dry instead of light, crispy and fluffy. I didnt like that it came with syrup on it bc I believe that people should be able to put their own syrup on their food. The chicken was juicy and breaded with a nice crispness but it had absolutely no flavor. It tasted so bland and it didnt help that the waffles tasted mid. I left still hungry bc I only half of what was on my plate. The only thing not mid was the coffee. I wont be coming back to try anything else.
