Wow. This place was so delicious, I can see why it fills up. It actually started drizzling and no one even cared. People held up their umbrellas as they ate. (They should consider putting up umbrellas over the tables though.) We had a salad with this amazingly rich bacon dressing and pickled apples that just blew my mind. We also had a lush burger and it was really interesting, covered in gruyere - also with pickled veggies chopped up finely. The charcuterie plate with duck prosciutto was to die for - a bunch of really interesting honey poured in the middle for dipping - and we LOVED the wine flights! Service was good as well. Can’t wait to go back.
My wife and I love this place. The wine selection is obviously phenomenal and we love that theres plenty of reasonably priced wine in addition to the rarer, more expensive bottles.Food is fantastic and should not be skipped - while the store focus is on wine, the kitchen is cooking some phenomenal dishes.Overall I highly recommend Lush - weve been twice and are excited to return for more!
The place has a chance to be really great. The wine selection is terrific, the food is good, and the space is very nice. But...their service was really bad. It was friendly, but bad. They failed at the basics of table service (keeping water glasses filled, clearing away empty dishes, checking in every so often), and also failed at the more complex stuff (waiter knew basically nothing about wine...in a wine bar). They weren’t that busy when we were there, and there was a *ton* of staff just kind of milling around. Hopefully all the problems are just the result of being so new. But yeah...service will make or break a restaurant more so than the food.
I stumbled upon this place while walking on Central Street. An absolute gem. The staff was so friendly and attentive. The wine outstanding and the cheese plate I had was perfect. I looked over the menu and I will return to have a proper meal. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious and the smell from the kitchen was infectious. I will be returning.
First time coming here and had been very excited to try. The wine was good and the atmosphere was nice. Chilly as some have stated, but it did not bother me; they store wine inside...so it is understandable. Seemed like the wine and spirits menu was exciting as well as their food menu. The negative review is because my entire experience was clouded by the service. I found our bartender/server to be condescending nearly the entire time. I tried to chalk it up to a sarcastic sense of humor, but it felt pretentious and ruined the experience that I had been looking forward to for over a week. The questions I asked were given a dismissive response. Although--granted-- I am not a sommelier, I am not a wine novice and was merely asking questions to engage. You can fault me for lack of creativity in my questions but Cs responses the entire time felt as though he was serving himself and his ego instead of a customer. I am the type of patron who will order an additional glass of something based on a recommendation or even buy a bottle. C missed a great opportunity with a customer. This could have been the first experience that would make me a repeated customer. I also work nearby and would have been able to recommend this establishment to clients. Since going, clients have asked me what my experience was and I was quite vocal about it.Having previously worked at a tasting room, I know that it is the person behind the bars job to make wine accessible and get people excited to drink more. C lacked on almost all fronts for me and shaped my experience and memory of my first time at Lush on Central.
I was at the Evanston location today and loved it. Unfortunately after the Iowa/Northwestern game it was pouring rain and we had an issue with our car so we were a bit stranded about 12 miles from our home in downtown Chicago with our kids. We hung out at Lush for a few hours for some food and drinks while we figured things out. Our server Henry was so kind and hands on with us making sure we had everything we needed and even helped us call people to assist us with our car. If you find yourself in Evanston check out Lush for the burger and Henry. Thank you Lush for making a rough day for our family better.
In 56 years, I have NEVER written a negative review of anything. I agree with the person who said, I wouldn’t go back if they were giving the wine away!WORST experience EVER! 3 or 4 chances for the staff to recover and not one of them thought customers mattered at all! I feel badly for the owner being represented like this!

2022-04-11My partner and I finally made it to the is warm neighborly establishment and we were not disappointed. There for lunch we enjoyed a house burger and a lobster roll and shared the freshest and very novel green salad. The salad had the juiciest orange slices delicately deveined and with roasted buckwheat. Fresh, novel and delicious! My lobster was fresh, plump and plentiful! I really enjoyed the pickled mini veggies as they balanced the roll with warm mayo. My partners burger was also a new take with juicy beef and plenty of pickled vegetables. Again, a unique presentation and taste. I enjoyed my roll with a wonderful French white that beautifully balanced mineralogy with fruitiness. Light and lovely. My partner chose a South African blend that really stood out for its spicy esa yet medium bodied taste. Our only bad was that my bread roll was a bit moldy, but everything else was superb!

2022-05-01Where to begin … we were seated in an odd section in front of the cooks , I wanted to sit at the bar we were told the bar seats were reserved.. I ordered a whiskey sour - nothing great about it , ordered octopus and it was awful ! It was octopus from a can ! Not even cooked , oily and just gross .. ordered lobster sandwich - it was ok , had no flavor . Last items ordered -earl old fashion and that interesting , not bad but for $20 it should be excellent. The waitress was nice .. not knowledgeable of the menu and didn’t recommend anything . Waste of money ! Would never return .

2022-07-31Summary: mediocre food, poor serviceWent for dinner on a Saturday night in July. The outdoor area in the back was nice. After our drinks arrived we ordered our food and some bread for the table. After 30 minutes, we still hadn’t received our bread, despite following up on it and asking another waiter. Our food eventually arrived after about 45 minutes and one of our entrees was forgotten. A few pieces of bread finally arrived some minutes later, and was served to us with no butter or olive oil, which was strange. The staff was not very apologetic about the dish that they forgot (we never were served it) or the long-overdue bread. The foot itself was not great. One of us had the steak and frites and claimed “it was the worst steak and frites he’s ever had.”There is very little reason to ever come for dinner here. Perhaps come in for just a glass of wine.

2019-12-04Update: after my last experience, Faith asked me to come back and give them another chance. The temperature was much more comfortable, and the service was close to perfect. Everything we ate was delicious, and Adam selected fantastic cheeses and wines. I’ll be back.————-/Holy cow. It’s so cold that they keep shawls to share, but my fingers were still numb in my jacket and their shawl. When we asked the the staff to turn up the heat or at least turn down the fan, they said no. The wine was tasty, but I don’t want to freeze while I drink. I’m leaving and going to Vinic or Wine Goddess where the wine is just as good, the service is friendly, and the environment is comfortable.

2022-06-05It was a very very poor dining experience. I could go on and on but it’s a waste of time. Don’t go eat there! Simply, my husband and I believe that Evanston needs a really good restaurant like the old Stain Glass!

2022-03-06This used to be our go to place. What happened to the Lush we used to go to? For two drinks we were charged $44.00. Ouch!! I dont mind paying but when the bill came for two drinks for $28.00, which we used to pay, the server took the bill from my hand and said the total was mis-calculated. Second bill came within minutes with $44.00 and the bartender stated the price went up for Old Fashion from $14 to $20. I told the man that in a minute the price went up?? And, his response was to blame the government. It seems like the government hasnt affected Evanston downtown restaurants yet where we are still paying $14 for Old Fashion. Oh well, too bad Lushs prices went up, and customer service went way down.

2021-11-03One recent mid-afternoon we fortunately celebrated Ss birthday here and were suitably impressed with the quality of service, food and drink. Not to go on and on (as I am prone to do). Believe us and visit Lush if you enjoy an intimate brick and wood environment filled with friendly, wine knowledgeable and generous servers and a true feeling of being part of a kind and welcoming group. Take part with that in mind. Dont expect Michelin star perfection ala Charlie Trotters (R.I.P.) There is none of that tension. Join the family and feel the love.

2021-07-19Very nice low key spot. And the folks there are what makes it 5-star worthy. They pitch themselves as a boutique liquor store, and they do that very well (though, as with any store of this kind, the personal preferences of the owner/buyer are evident and color the selection). But we were there with an out-of-town guest for food as well, and particularly given the very limited facilities (no dedicated kitchen space) they did a remarkable job. The menu is inevitably limited, but what they do they do extremely well. (A mention/caution has to be made about the (current) veggie burgers, which are made with dashi, which itself is made with dried bonito tuna. From a flavor perspective this makes total sense, but isnt what most people call vegetarian.) Everything we had as a group was excellent. And the charming, though quite small, rear patio was a very nice place to spend a relaxed evening. But it must be said that the people here are really what makes this place work and even shine. They deserve high praise indeed.

2020-02-12Fantastic food and service. Love sitting at bar and watching everyone and the open kitchen. I have very specific diet and they are very accommodating. Great place.

2021-10-16Fun, pleasant place for a meal and a grand selection of unusual wines and spirits. The crispy chickpeas are my favorite and the little garden patio is so cute and relaxing. The number of servers we had waiting on us was a little confusing and they could have coursed things out a bit better but overall, a truly lovely experience. Will definitely be back!!**Update: Been back a couple times. We brought friends and were embarrassed by the mistakes our server kept making. Really, place like this should train their employees to know wine and liquor. We came back again and the menu page was missing. No one helped us, we were left alone. Nobody seems to know what theyre doing. I guess this is what I get for moving to a suburb.
