The Lincoln Home tour was awesome. Our tour guide was great and very informative. It was so awesome to see the home restored to what it would have been when President Lincoln and his family lived there. Also, if there is time, walk the neighborhood street. It was so scenic. (Careful on the boardwalks, they warn you that theyre uneven)
You’re taken back in time in this quaint little neighborhood in the middle of busy Springfield Illinois. The home itself seems quite big for it’s time but it is a sight to see and it’s an excellent experience for all. Tours are available at the visitor center and there is ample parking and rest areas throughout the three blocks.
The Nostalgia of this place is overwhelming. You feel like youve traveled back in time. The tour guide was nice except he kept watching my sons every move after he leaned on a wall. He got close to the walls and pointed it out to him. My son got upset. Besides that little fiasco, the tour went great. Lots of history and places to see there. I recommend the museums theater show.
It was cool to work through the only home Lincoln owned. The tour guide was good. Very knowledgeable. In my opinion they need to limit the number of visitors per group. It was a little crowded which took away from the experience. Maybe go on a weekday. We went on a Saturday.
We spent a whole day visiting all the Lincoln sites in Springfield. It was well worth the trip! The Museum and presidential library were great and held my kids attention with a scavenger hunt that had them learning and playing at the same time. I loved The Ghost of the Museum show. It was so meaningful that it brought tears to my eyes. After getting to know Lincoln better we went to his house and got to experience his home and old neighborhood as it was when he lived there. It felt so personal. (There was no charge at all thanks to the generosity of Robert Lincoln who wanted that way when he gave his parents home to the state.). Our final stop was Oak Ridge Cemetery to say goodbye to our most beloved president and honor his sacrifice for us all. I highly recommend this pilgrimage to anyone who loves history.
I took the 10 oclock tour and learned quite a lot of Lincolns early history. I saw some of Lincolns original furniture included his desk. The kitchen is very small and has an original cookstove that Mary Todd Lincoln bought in 1860. The street where Lincoln lived has been restored like the 1860 when Lincoln lived there except instead of dirt now there is gravel. This historic site is free including the tour.
1000% percent recommend you stopping by and experiencing a little bit of history! Amazing and beautifully conserved homes and streets. I was fascinated by everything and they have a wagon with details of what happened in that block and who lived there, etc. So happy I was able to see Lincoln’s home!
Great site. We loved the informative and efficient tour of Lincolns home. We didnt wait long to get a ticket and then start the tour. We enjoyed it a lot and it was nice to walk around the small downtown area restored to look similar to what it wouldve done. Definitely one of our more favourite national memorials.
Loved it! Haven’t been there in many years but when I went it was a pleasant time. The staff were dressed in historical attire on the surrounding homes porches. The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. It felt like a step back in time. The home was beautifully preserved. Really enjoyable experience.
Nicely managed National Park Services site. It has kept the place in great shape and renovated/preserved the aging neighborhood. The documentary played at the visitor centre helps with understanding the presidents life. Not much to do around here other than a few bars and café, so plan your travel with right expectations!!
The tour is definitely worth it. First come, first served basis, so you may want to get there early to reserve your tickets, they are free. We luckily got on the last tour and it was very educational and interesting. You can only go in 2 other homes, so try to take the tour.
Had a tour on Friday morning at 9:30. The park service rangers were very accommodating of our familys mobility issue. The tour was well-given and our guide was knowledgeable and kind. Experiencing an intimate connection to the Lincoln family through their home of 17 years was very moving. We will remember this experience.
A M A Z I N G! Everyone should go here. Both presentations in the theaters were so entertaining and informative. The whole museum is so, so well done, beautiful, educational but fascinating. I was so impressed to really understand what Lincolns early experiences were and the great passion he felt about ending slavery. I felt like I met the real Lincoln.
I had a lovely and peaceful walkthrough of this location. It’s free to the public and offers a great historical insight into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during Lincoln’s era. The park association has done a wonderful job maintaining the buildings and artifacts. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative, thank you Laura! I’d like to see more artifacts although it made for a leisurely and nostalgic afternoon. I’ve always loved historical landmarks such as this especially when they’re free to the general public.
We were pleasantly surprised by how large this historic site was. We thought it was just the Lincoln home, but it is actually a section of the neighborhood where they lived. We did not actually go into the house since we were in the area after it closed, but we heard wonderful things about the preservation of the home. We walked around and read the plaques that lined the street which told us so much about the history of the neighborhood. This is a must-see for history/ Lincoln fans!
On our way home from Texas we decided to go through Springfield to show our 6 year old grandson our state capitol and Lincoln Home and Tomb. It was actually my first time there also. I love history and love teaching him about history also. He loved it. He even took pictures with his own tablet.
This place is truly incredible. They did a great job in preserving the 4 blocks around his house and giving you a feel of what the life of Lincoln was like. The staff can answer almost any question and is very knowledgeable, helpful, and well informative. I really felt moved by this place and am so thankful for all the people that work hard to keep it great.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about arguably the best president in our history. This home allows visitors to catch a glimpse into the life our Abraham Lincoln before he left for Washington never to return. The house shows you an early president that did not live in luxury, the way others may be portrayed. The tour guides are wonderful and it is a great stop for all who enjoys presidential history.
Very neat place to visit. The neighborhood is blocked off to traffic. At the visitor center theres a film about Lincolns life when he lived here. You can get free tickets for a guided tour through the Lincoln house. A couple of the neighbor houses are open and have information about what it was like to live there and some artifacts.
No fee for tickets, this is a way to control number of visitors in the house at one time. Guides are very knowledgeable and take questions. Recommend getting there early, before 11am, tickets are 1st come 1st served. No advance tickets are secured, day of visit only. We also were there when parking was free. Probably will pay to park in their lot this year. Well worth it!
It was wonderful to visit the house that one of our greatest Presidents of all time lived in. Be sure you have plenty of time to walk around the area as you visit several houses that have been beautifully restored! And while youre there, be sure to say hello to Abe and Mary!
Really cool area, alot of tiny wildlife roaming about for being in the middle of town. Side note: Always remember to lock your vehicle and put any and everything you want to keep inside of it, not in the bed of your truck. We were lucky enough to be informed of this by a local that was also nice enough to keep an eye out since we were parked in view of their porch.
Awesome tour. Get a short 20-30 minute tour of Lincolns only home that he ever owned. The tour guide was very informative and answered questions well. A great piece of history and its free admission. They had several artifacts inside the home that actually belonged to Lincoln. Very neat.
Such a great experience to be able to walk the streets that Lincoln walked and to see that the town preserved it to an old time status was the greatest thing that you could ever experience. Talk about being stuck in time. They also had stories on his neighbors and other accomplished families. Great story about Lincoln in front of his house from where he grew up and where and how big of a difference he actually made for the people.
Must see! Great place to explore and even learn a thing or two. There is just something magical about being in the same place someone so significant spent do much time at. Great for kids and even date night. The entire street is welcoming and it feels like taking a stole through the past and then back to the present. This place will stuck with you forever.
Awesome experience. Went to the home of Abraham Lincoln with no idea what it would be like. The entire neighborhood has been preserved by the national park service. Unfortunately, due to covid we were not able to go into the house, but just walking the streets was good enough. You could see by using your imagination what life must have been like for Abraham Lincoln. For me it put into perspective the he was just a regular guy before leaving for Washington. History has made him into a larger than life figure.
The place is very interesting and the tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The whole 4 blocks surrounding the Lincoln residence has been turned into a National Park. The tour is free, all you have to do is stop by the visitor center, get your tickets and take the tour.
Love this beautiful historical home. Anyone who loves history will definitely enjoy this place. Those wooden pedestrian street and the sand filled old streets are so beautiful and preserved really well. Also, you will see more old houses and other things that are preserved here. My husband and I both loved it so much when we visited it in May and I took my parents last weekend. They also enjoyed it even though it was super hot 😅🇺🇸❤️
We had fun looking around Lincolns neighborhood. The tour of Lincoln Home was so memorable and worth it. You get to feel what it was like during his era. The place was well preserved and restored. Our tour guide was very nice and informative. I could not believe that this tour is for free. Thanks to Robert Lincoln.People should put this in their bucket list coz history is really important to know about and be appreciated. Without this kind of people/heroes such as Abraham Lincoln, we would not enjoy the very freedom we are experiencing right now.
So, I love history. Especially American history. If you are like me or even just lukewarm on things like this, than I highly recommend visiting the Lincoln home. The tour guide was thorough and also quite witty. The house is in great condition and unlike Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate, photography and filming are both allowed inside the Lincoln home. I believe there was a very small cost associated with visiting the home. Maybe $2 and you get your tickets at this little Lincoln Home historic park site building not far from the home. This is also where you park and the $2 might only have been for the parking, my memory is unfortunately not clear on that any longer. It was quite a thrill picturing the Lincoln’s in their home for things like Christmas, birthdays etc. There is much of the inside and outside of the home that is original.
What a fabulous experience. The whole block is managed by the National Park Service. You have to go to the visitors center to get tickets to go on the tour of the home, but it is well worth any wait. Our park ranger was great and the tour was just wonderful. We did a full review on our blog site and YouTube channel.
We had an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide!!! Walking through the house and listening to her tell you the stories almost made you feel like you were going back in time... to see the way they lived, the elegance of the home and the furniture... I was moved!!! Mary Lincolns bedroom had her original commode!!! A lot of the furniture is the original furniture that the Lincolns used... you could almost see them, I fell in love with the home. The kitchen although small, was very beautiful. I love it so much I plan on going again.
Theyve made a little village of restored homes to surround the Lincoln home. Gives it a charming, and yet sacred ambiance. Theres a gift shop to help support the place. Free admission to Lincolns home thanks to a stipulation of Robert Lincoln to always allow free entrance. Free short tours (10-15 mins). Our tour guide says they give longer tours in winter, because there are less people. The tour guides I met are very passionate and knowledgeable about Lincoln and have read many biographies on his precious life. When you do something good for all people, along with living a private life of honesty and integrity, you are remembered forever- to the latest generation. ♥️
I regret not getting our guide to say her name again but she was fantastic. You get to tour the house President Lincoln lived in before he was our president, which is amazing to me. You can also tour two other houses. Everyone was nice and they let us pay for our parking after our tour so we wouldnt miss anything. They take small groups every 10-15 min. It took about an hour to do all three houses. If you have trouble navigating steps it might not be a good fit. Half of the tour is on the second level. Overall I would highly recommend.
We had a fun 1-2 hours here and learned some new facts about Lincoln even without taking the tour. Tour of Lincolns home is free but when we arrived the next available tour was 2 hours away and we didnt want to wait as we needed to get back on the road. Although we had such an enjoyable afternoon we ended up spending so much time in the area we could have done the tour anyway! We toured the other buildings you dont need a tour ticket for. The area is like 2 blocks of pedestrian only area with 10-12 preserved buildings including Lincolns home. You can do a self guided tour of 2 of them. Gift shop and bathrooms on site. Parking is available on site for $2 per hour in the honor system.
This is an awesome place to visit. We visited here on the day of 4th of July, US independence day. It was such a great feeling. Got so much information about Lincoln’s Home and that historic period. The home is maintained very well. There’s a separate visitor center too. Parking space is also available or we can also park on the roadside parking places. We took a stroll around the area too. Many nearby houses are preserved exactly the way they used to be in old times. The area is fairly quiet and peaceful. We really loved our visit.
Impressive, FREE, educational, interesting, well presented, well preserved, nice signage, 2 movies and info in the visitors center. Gift shop, but I preferred Mr Lincolns Gifts one block away. Get your free tickets in the visitors center. You can not get in the tour with out one.
Our stop here was spontaneous and loved how it worked out smoothly during the Christmas season. I called first when driving north up Interstate 55 to check hours and the representative was super friendly and helpful. They offer tours throughout the day making it very convenient to just stop in for a quick visit. The Lincoln Home is beautiful and was decorated for the holiday just as Mary Todd Lincoln had decorated. The whole street is living history as the neighborhood has been preserved just as it was when Lincoln lived in the house. Our tour guide was entertaining and informative.
This is a nice quick tour into the home and life of President Abraham Lincoln. This is a walking tour that is conducted by the Park Ranger. The tour is free of charge. You just have to register with the welcome desk. Lincolns home is the highlight of the attractions, but there are two other homes that you can enter. The attraction takes about an hour to complete.
The entrance to the historical site was free which is nice (they even print us a ticket) the tour inside Lincoln actual house have to be guided you can’t just walk in and check it out by yourself. The surrounding was small but can feel the people living vibes back in the day.
The only negative to our visit here was the fact we got there after hours and the visit was short. Im giving it five stars, because it was much more than we expected as the entire street where Lincoln lived is part of this historic site. We were also a bit overwhelmed at the sense of importance of this spot in the middle of downtown Springfield. Interpretive markers throughout the neighborhood really help you learn about not only Lincolns home, but also the history of his neighbors.
Very much worth the trip. I was impressed with how much original furniture that Lincoln actually used was still in this house. The hand rail going up the stairs is original to the house so your hands are touching the exact same piece of furniture that Lincoln touched all those years ago. I learned a lot about Tad and Willie too. I plan to research them a little more. I never knew they were nicknamed the Springfield Terrors.
Free! Go in the morning to reserve your tour, I am told it fills up. Very well done. The tour guide super informative, although perhaps she had a little bit too much coffee that morning. Did I mention.. FREE! Also, more than just one house, but a little neighborhood that was representative of that period.
Definitely worth checking out. I learned so much more about Lincoln than I knew before. It was truly experience but the best part was interacting with the Lincoln impersonator who was very informative and truly committed to the character. The only thing you pay for is parking the tour is free as well the history comes alive portion which is very interactive. If you are ever in Springfield check it out
Really cool place to visit and she some historical stuff, theres a free tour you can walk on streets that are like they were back in Lincolns time theres a movie that runs in the theater and if you plan it just right there in period Time dress a couple times a day. And they are apart of the Jr. Ranger program yeah
The Lincoln Home is an exceptionally maintained historical stop in understanding Abraham Lincolns life and his service to our nation. The home is located in downtown Springfield. And the entire block emcompasses the tour experience. The home is representative of Lincolns hard work ethic and financial investment in providing a comfortable home for his family. The home boasts original furnishings and artifacts. The tours are provided by a Ranger. Admission tickets are free of charge through the visitors center. Literally you are stepping into Lincolns neighborhood and home. Turn the knob and run your hands up the same banister and climb the same steps as our 16th President. There are also other homes to tour on our own.
Nice historical site. In visitor center you can watch two documentary movies about Abraham Lincoln. Those give you insight of how President’s life was and after that when you take a tour inside his house it’s nice. The cost is free but you have to pay for the parking which is $2.00 per hour.
Abraham Lincolns family home in Springfield, Il is worth the trip. There is a small parking fee, but the rest is free including the tour of the Lincoln home. Although you do have to get free tickets at the Visitor Center, I speculate that it is to control the number of people in the house at any given time. It is not only the Lincoln home which has been preserved it is the entire street.Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president, he was elected and guided the United states during a very tumultuous period in our nations history. A great war that threatened to tear our nation apart, in which the issue of slavery would be finally decided once and for all. But before he was elected in 1860, he was a Lawyer, a Congressman, a husband and a father. It is here at the Lincoln family home you can visit and get a true sense of the man who later would through sheer will and determination lead our nation through its darkest times. Is there anything more personal than to see a person home and how they lived, this is what you get to experience at the Lincoln family home. There are two other must stops in springfield, the Lincoln Law office which is right down the street. A little further is Lincolns tomb, many people dont realise that he is not buried in the Lincoln Monument in Washington D.C. but here in springfield.
Fabulous place to take a tour. The rangers are nice and quite knowledgeable. If you go in the winter they put out furniture and objects that they don’t have out in the summer. There’s a movie, a quite expansive visitors center, and a gift shop as well. Parking is $2 per hour or you can use street parking.
Amazing, iconic home of the great emancipator and 16th President. Lincoln lived here from 1844-1861. This is the only home Lincoln owned. All of his children were born here. The house has 12 rooms on 2 floors and you are allowed to take photos. The Presidents son, Robert, donated the home to the State of Illinois in 1887, under the condition it would be open to the public for free. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on Dec 19, 1960 and a National Historic Site on Aug 18, 1971.
I was first impressed by how friendly and welcoming were the staff members (many of whom, I might assume, were volunteers.) We enjoyed the visitors center and a tour of Lincolns home. We walked to the old capital building and the Lincoln Library, but had we known better, would not have left our car parked at the Lincoln Home Historic Site. Since the parking is metered, we found ourselves having to jog back after touring the library and museum, when we might have, instead, visited some of the downtown shops. All in all, though, a wonderful day!
Interesting tour of the home given by the National Parks service. It gives you an insight into Lincolns life and struggle as he rose to his presidency. If you are a Lincoln or history fan be sure to enjoy this free tour that features 2 introductory films about Lincoln.
Unbelievable! You can see the very desk, furniture, stove, and other authentic items owned by Lincoln and his family over 150 years ago. It was particularly moving to grasp the same stair rail that he and his family used countless times. Ive never seen anything like this.
Great place to visit - the house is almost all original and the tour guides do a great job of telling you about the house. Its also free and the gift shop/visitors center has movies to watch too. Take the time to stroll down the street and enjoy the other historical houses- it makes it easy to imagine what it would have been like to live here in Lincolns time.
Entrance is Free but parking is paid for. When you 1st arrive go to the welcome center for a free tour ticket. The ranger will tell you about the next available time. You will get a little history on your tour. You will be told multiple times not to touch anything in the house. Not even the walls. Then you are free to roam around the neighborhood. They have a few of his neighbors house that you can walk into. The ranger was so open to take any questions we had. Great to bring kids that are learning about him in school.
The unique thing about this place is that they preserved the neighborhood around the home, not just the home. So within the city of Springfield, youre able to step back in time and be surrounded by life in the 1800s. This is a fun place to either learn about Lincoln or just sit and relax and have your lunch.
Stopped here on the way back from AL to Schaumburg IL. We really enjoyed ourselves. The tour was interesting and informative. I suggest giving yourself a few hours at least as I didn’t realize it was a whole neighborhood with many, many homes and artifacts. We didn’t have much time as we came late in the day. We will definitely come back with more time to spare.
The park rangers did a great job of conveying information and guiding the tour, answering questions. Lincolns home is fully furnished to provide a clear idea of what it was like for the family when they lived there. The entire street is a historic district that shows what it was like to live there during Lincolns time. We visited here and then the Oakridge Cemetery — it was a great history lesson on our 16th President and his family.
Very cool to walk through the actual house that Abraham Lincoln lived. A lot of cool history and you really get a feeling of what life was like back then. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and know the history well. Ask a lot of questions and they had the answers. Easy parking close by. Right in the middle of Springfield.
We stopped here after seeing the Lincoln Memorial just a short drive away. The tour was free and parking was cheap. This is a really neat place and definitely worth the stop. Lincoln spent 25 years in Springfield, 17 of those years in this home. The staff and our tour guide were very knowledgeable and helpful, and were good with the kids too. If you enjoy American history at all, you’ll like stopping here.
Abraham Lincoln is by far the best POTUS methinks and I love him! This site shows how he lived as a regular citizen before he became a politician. Before his triumph as a lawmaker, he had struggles here including the tragic death of one of his sons. Take the tour of this historic place and you will learn more about this great individual.
A must for all Americans to make their pilgrimage to this historic place! So much to learn about our great country and one of its most significant leader, Abe Lincoln. It is also quite instructive and educational to visit this place(including Lincoln tomb, Lincoln Museum and the Presidential Library). Lincolns life also teaches us how best to understand and deal with the present day happenings including the insurrection of Jan 6 and constant attacks on our democracy and institutions. Highly recommended to all Americans of all age groups and all color and creed!
Visiting in October, received our free tickets at the NPS visitor center. We filled time in the visitor center for our 4:00pm tour. The neighborhood and home is preserved to their time there. They did a good job capturing the time period look. And on the next block is an empty lot that had an underground railroad station house, operating in Lincolns time.Life long dream fulfilled coming here.*Dont steal the nameplate on the door. Its not the original.*
So cool to see and I feel it adds to the experience that the entire street was preserved!!!Currently due to covid we couldnt go inside, but just seeing the outside and being there was amazing!! If youre going to the Lincoln museum I wouldnt miss this stop!Excellent parking lot option right there on site of the neighborhood, was easy to get in and out.
Absolutely wonderful place! A must go for anybody with a love of Lincoln or history. To know you are standing, walking where Lincoln did is an amazing feeling! A lot of care is going into taking the area back to exactly what it was for a true feeling of going back in time.
Worth it! The free tour starts with a 20 minute movie about the life of Abraham Lincoln in the Visitors Center. You MUST have tickets before entering the home with a guide (also provided at the Visitors Center). Beautifully restored period home and informative guides. The whole historic street is lovely and makes for a peaceful evening walk if you have the chance.

2022-04-16The house was very interesting. The tour guide was good. He should definitely go through it at least one time in your life. Just to say you did it. Theres so much in this town to look at it definitely will take a couple trips especially if youre doing a weekend adventure. If youre wondering this is a free tour. You do have to ask for tickets and the visiting center.

2022-05-28So exciting to see this homestead! Set in a beautiful area where surrounding houses are also being preserved. Lots of interesting information to take in! We didn’t tour inside of home, due to our schedule, but I’m sure it was beautiful! Would recommend to anyone thinking of visiting!

2022-04-12Its a great place to visit for all ages. I visited this place during the spring break 2022 with my 5 year old toddler son. If you are going there for the first time, here is the few information:1. Tour to Lincolns home is free, but it is guided one. It leaves every 30 min, so try to put your name down as soon as you get to the museum2. The parking is free and that is in front of the visitor center. No worries - there is enough parking spot.3. If you are with kid, let your kid participate in the Junior ranger program... it takes only 15-20, but the fun part is they get certificate signed by the ranger and also a Junior ranger badge. This one is free as well.4. Take a walk outside the Lincolns home on the brick-road. You will feel you have gone 200 years back in time-machine.

2022-01-10The museum and historic houses encompass a beautifully preserved historic area near the old capital building. Our tour guide was incredibly Insightful and knowledgeable about the site, and she was pretty cute too. You have to get a tour ahead of time in order to see the house but it is free because of Robert Lincoln selling it to the state for $1.. Lots of awesome history here definitely recommend checking it out

2021-12-11It was a great experience, and our Tour Guide, Danny, was very knowledgeable. Id definitely like to visit again, preferably when its warmer so I can see the houses around Lincolns without freezing. Id recommend you get a National Passport if you are a stamp collector, I personally enjoy that aspect. See attached photos for what youll expect to see.

2022-04-23This was my favorite thing to do in all of Springfield. I have been there at 13 years old and 43 years old and the experience was a fantastic one both times. Just an absolute time warp. I will be going again and it won’t be another 30 years! The home is surprisingly accessible on the exterior.

2022-04-08Interesting area right in Springfield. Only two of the historic buildings were open while we were there. Lots of other buildings to walk around and read about as well. The main building has movies and other information about Lincoln.Entry is free. Parking is only a few bucks and on an honor system. We spent an hour or 2 there. Could have spent a lot longer, but it was chilly.

2022-04-17This street is so cute (and has an B&B right next to it). Walking the streets were a great man once walked is amazing! It was a bummer that getting a tour, while Free, is hard, which is why I only put down 4 stars.
