Jewel-Osco in other cities:
While the selections and variety of products are great at this location, please deal with the homeless that loiters day in and day out outside the only entrance to the store. At times, I do not comfortable going to the location knowing that I’m going to have to hear the woes of others that is not my business. There is also a no soliciting sign outside as well but clearly no enforced on premise.
You can easily find all you need for the daily life with a relatively large variety of gastronomic goods. The parking place is pretty large and very helpful in an area where finding a parking for your car is pretty complicated if not impossible. The store prices are not as convenient as you might expect but overall are affordable.
Below is my first review. I wanted to add more. When Im in my uniform, I get spoken too a whole bunch and treated nice. When Im in my civilian clothes, I get stared at and watched like a criminal. For instance, yesterday I entered the self checkout, it was the first time and I mean the first time, the Indian male manager stood by the shopping carts and watched me ring up all my items. After I rung up the last item, he walked away back to monitor the remaining register, but for me, he stood by the windows, by the shopping carts. I felt so bad because I been coming to this Jewel for 7 years now. 7 years before he started working there. I wanted to tell him so bad that he didnt have to do that. If I was in my City of Evanston Uniform, he wouldnt did that too me. This makes me feel so bad. I want the Jewel employees to know that every BLACK Man doesnt steal or scam. There are some very good honest hard working black man such as Reggie who is a black man who works there. If Im treated with respect in a City of Evanston uniform, please treat me with the same energy without the uniform.Im a regular customer. This is my local Jewel. Over the weekend, the cashier Chad ask me was I buying liquor for my son which is a minor. I feel so offended. My son is 15 years old. Why would I do something like this. Chad needs better customer service training.
On August 29th, at approximately 7:20 am, I went into this store to look for some Chicken Livers. No other grocery store had them, and Ive been searching for over a week. I made a b-line straight towards the Meat Department. I saw a heavy-set Hispanic guy about 5ft 11 or 6ft tall working there. He was stocking the cooler display. I walked up to him and asked if they carried Chicken Livers. He never looked up but could be heard muttering something. I couldnt make out what he said, so I asked him again. At that point he stopped what he was doing, looked up at me and yelled in an angry tone while pointing, ITS IN THE FREEZER DOWN THAT ISLE TO YOUR LEFT!! I went to the location area, and after about 10 seconds I found them. GREAT! What wasnt so great was the attitude of that Jewel Osco Worker. Im not sure what was going on with him. We all have bad days, but whatever was making his day bad, he should have left it at home, or put it out of his mind. When your job brings you into contact with the general public, you must put on a different hat, and you may have to do a little bit of acting if you are not in a good mood. I hope someone from the Management Department read this review and remind him of these things.
This location has a decent selection of products, but the customer service is always hit and miss with the cashiers. Some are great and some are terrible. One will check your eggs to make sure theyre not cracked (thanks to the lovely cashier who did that!), while another will literally throw your groceries at you because youve opted to help bag to save time on account of their glacial pace.
Thanks Jewel for being open late and saving the day.To the two young ladies working at service desk tonight - probably not a good idea to follow up the closing announcement with disrespectfully, gtfo out of our storeI didnt take offence but wasnt far from it considering that I was the only customer around. Youre still at work, you can at least try be mindful
My experience at jewels was wonderful. The coustomer service was excellent. The cashier was a delight she was professional engaging and very helpful as well. I wish i had the presence of mind to ask her name because i would have definitely mentioned it in this review.
Nice supermarket in Evanston. They carry almost everything you could need. This location is not as big as suburban locations, though. The sale prices are good deals. I ordered from the deli and was served promptly. I checked out at a busy time, around 6 pm, but did not have to wait in line. Free parking for customers.
So let me preface this by saying this review is from 11 days after I was in the store as I was in on August 29th and it is now September 9th. I never shop at this location and thought that I would give it a try for a change of pace. The first issue was that they had a few breakfast sausage options on sale. I grabbed one and froze it when I got home. This morning, I took it out of the freezer and saw the expiration date was July 20th. Again, I bought it on August 29th. It was over a month expired and still on the shelf, and marked as on sale perhaps in an attempt to get people to buy them. Then, there was only one regular cashier open and one express cashier... at 2 o clock... on a Saturday. I had a full cart with over $300 worth of product, So express was not an option, and there was a considerable line for the regular cashier, so I opted for self checkout. The nail in the coffin was the woman helping at the self checkout. She was clearly getting irritated after the checkout alerted her 3 separate times that we were skipping the bagging area on too many things. She had to keep coming over to swipe her badge and authorize it. There was literally no more room to put any more of our groceries in the bagging area, so I didn’t really have a choice. Whether it was intentional on her part or not, I was made to feel like I was causing an inconvenience to her, and the overall experience has deterred me from returning to this location. On a positive note, their produce was really fresh so at least there’s that.
Shopped at Jewel. One item I was looking for - sliced swiss cheese. Signature brand. Out of all Jewel brand sliced cheeses, there were only 2 packages, of Monterey Jack. Not one other type of jewel brand sliced cheeses was in stock. Horrible dairy out of stocks. Especially when thats what you are there for.
The night time service is excellent. The meat department is second to none. The bakery makes the best and freshest raspberry coffee cake. Please try one you will be delighted. Please stop by the produce department and purchase both blackberries and raspberries with short cakes and Deans diary whipped topping. A great treat.Helene Mann is a great and hard working employee at this Jewel. Attend!!!!
This store is always well maintained. The staff is so wonderful every time I have gone. They seem to stay steadily busy so be aware you might wait some time in line. The staff handles the crowds very well. They might be a bit understaffed for how busy they are but a great jewel location!
Often times sale items are empty. Get a rain check. Problem is that certain items get discontinued. So what good is the rain check?Long lines at the checkout. Not enough workers or lines open. Major problem at lunchtime. People on their lunch break have little time. They travel to and from Jewel. Stand in line another 10 minutes. Lunch break is over. They dont seem to care. Happens everyday. Ive seen people leave their food at the checkout. Ran out of time. Some not all of the workers telling stories instead of doing their job.
Whenever I go here, at least once a week, half the stuff Im trying to buy is out of stock (produce, dairy, meat...), or isnt stocked at all (very poor selection of ethnic ingredients) and I end up waiting in line for half an hour because there are 20 people waiting and two cashiers. No self checkout anymore either, which is a shame since the cashiers who are there are slow as molasses.
They have a nice selection of produce and usually good prices and specials. The store could certainly be updated a bit, it always looks a little dirty and the weird entrance doesnt help. Ive had a mixed experience buying fish and meat here. Staff is generally nice but checkout can be pretty slow on busy days.
If Im too lazy to go to Whole Foods or its too late to go to Trader Joes I might end up here, but I usually regret it. The cashiers are typically rude and careless. Its like they just dont want you there. There are a couple of employees that that are decent, but most of the cashiers working nights clearly dont want to be there and it shows. Was going to give 2 stars, but I upped it by a star to 3 since Jewel is trying to keep up with the neighborhoods demand. I dig the new remodel and the heathy isle they added.
There are rarely baggers available. The staff dont seem to enjoy working there. The store was recently remodeled, but seems to be more difficult to navigate. The express lanes replaced self-checkout lanes, which were much more efficient. Last year a manager, I presume, posted the store regional rankings in public view, and included a motivational message, We want to go from worst to first! My wife is totally enraged by the slow decline of the store over the last several years, but I find it rather comical. Ive worked in various service industries long enough that I have a hard time giving anyone who works for the general public a one-star rating unless theyre actively punching me in the face or spilling hot coffee on my lap, but I have to agree that this store doesnt exactly go out of its way to be amazing. Will I keep shopping here every week like I have for the last nine years? Of course I will; its the closest place to get decent prices on food. But I will continue to enjoy the rather silly, We dont go the extra mile and were cool with that, feel of this store. Obviously, Im not so motivated to go elsewhere, even though theres a great Marianos just a few miles away.
We live around the corner and this is one if not the most disappointing Jewels in the Chicagoland area. The layout of the store is poor, especially the checkout lanes which sit right on top of the end caps of the isles.Produce items are anything but fresh. Its obvious the store purchased these items a while ago and then jack the prices up, even higher than most other Jewel stores. More times than not weve bought some fruit there only to have it go bad in a day or two. We like to think were budget conscious, but we have to go to Whole Foods just to have a chance of the food lasting a decent amount of time.Customer service is really bad as well. Some employees are nice, but most are very slow and rude. Feels like going to the DMV every time we go there. We try to go to other places as much as possible, but sometimes we just cannot avoid it.Wish they would either shut this place down or get new management/owners to run a decent operation.
I really miss the self checkout registers. Even with additional express lanes the lines are often long and theyre crowded against the end of the aisles so its a big traffic jam of carts. If they at least had more of the short carts it would help, but those are always in high demand while dozens of standard-size carts are stacked up unused. The produce section is pretty extensive and theres a reasonable variety of other items, except the international foods.
Cleanliness...PoorSelection...FairPresentation... GoodAccessibility...PoorCustomer Service...FairParking....PoorShould make parking entrance other end of lot. Away from the minor cross section and allow closer handicap parking.Reduce some of the items carried... Location is over-crowded with items.
Store is clean and cashiers are friendly and efficient, but overall prices are much, MUCH, higher than its competitors. They place too much faith in convenience and customer complacency and therefore drastically increase prices across the board...most of these inflated costs are laughable and are clearly not to have been the result of supply and demand when you can drive to Valli or Trader Joes and get the EXACT SAME ITEMS for a fraction of Jewels cost. Granted, Jewel opens at 6 am, Valli at 7 am, and Trader Joes at 8 am, but Id rather spend pennies on gas than $10 on unnecessarily inflated grocery prices.
Terrible I brought a Mastercard and tried to activate it to no avail! Called the store and the associate said that they Jewels dont have anything to do with my purchase of the Mastercard ! #2!I brought some greens and they were so Dirty and filled with worm holes ! Oh on top of all that there was no manager in the store I have to get back to the manager tomorrow, I usually dont even shop at this Jewels because the employees are RUDE!
I really should have put this review up years ago.I was an employee of this Evanston Jewel right out of college and looking for some work experience. I am giving it 2 stars because some folks there were really fantastic people! The reason for the low rating is a Store Director who is no longer there. He was an angry abusive man who his employees feared. When I gave my two weeks he told many of the managers in other departments that I would come crawling back crying for my job. He also lied about how much I would be paid as a Crw Chief. A hint to Jewel Management.. try being a mentor and supportive leader for your team! You might find a better outcome!
This is a premium grocery store which has a very very good selection of kosher foods. From meets to fish to dairy I absolutely love the wide selection of kosher products this store offers. Although I do not make it a point to eat kosher it is a delight to see such a wide selection of so. The prices on most items are rather much higher then other groshey stores is the area.
Too bad Dominicks is no longer in business because without competition, Jewel stores dont seem to care. The cashiers seem okay, so this isnt a knock on them (because others have complained). But the store is always dirty and disorganized, and management doesnt seem to care that there are people parked right outside the doors begging and making comments as we walk in. Ive been here several times and have had a consistently bleak experience.
Today I spent 30 minutes in a two customer line. Apparently Jewel-Osco seeks out employees who can ring up your groceries with the speed of a sloth. When I finally got all of my groceries rung up, the cashier informed me that they dont take vertical Identification for the purchase of alcohol despite the fact that I am 21 years of age with legitimate identification. Never try to buy alcohol here if you just turned 21. (by the way, I called Jewel-Osco customer service and they said it was not a current policy). After all this, I walked away dissatisfied and as Im leaving the cashier tells me to hold my horses as if my payment would be declined. Screw this place and their excruciatingly slow employees. Never going back.
Every time I go there there are panhandlers standing right outside the door,in front of signs that read ,no panhandling, loitering etc, Evanston seems to not only not care almost seems like they encourage it,and its at every large store in town,Ive been very broke myself but these people are a nuisance and a potential traffic accident,my rating is based on Jewel not enforcing this and most employees there arent very friendly
Poorly managed:Went there to get morning baked goods. Good looking muffins but only one was labeled (and all out) 6 others were not. This is something obviously routine and not managed. And no prices on muffins either.Bakery clerk was great explaining what they were. (But still no idea how much they cost?!)At checkout there were 8 people in line this is at 830 am when people might need to get to work and ONLY ONE CASHIER??!!Cust service took a few people but was tied up also doing service tasks. Both lines were snail paced.I couldnt help think about how noticeably quick the multiple clerks are at TRADERS JOES ACROSS THE STREET!With no manager present and inadequate staff, this Jewel must not want Evanston and Rogers Park business?! Next time Ill hit Trader Joes. Or the Rogers Park Jewel.
Horrible!!!! No carts and when I asked about getting one, a mean and rude man yelled at me to follow him. I could go into more detail - but it got worse. I WILL NEVER. EVER GO THERE AGAIN. I left feeling humiliated and angry and drove 5 miles out of my way to a different store. Ive heard it was a bad store, but thought people were being over-sensitive. It is very mean there, both shoppers and many employees.
Need more cashiers, if you want alcohol that is over $30, you have to find and associate(good luck) or go to the front desk, wait in line, then they call.. And someone has to go to the back to find your product. Takes way too long, usually around 8-10 but has taken up to 15 minutes. They should have a button you can press to get help or just hire a security guard, or move alcohol to the other side of the store if they are worried about theft. If I only need alcohol, I would rather just go across the street to the liquor store
This place repeatedly disappoints me. The customers and cashiers are always rude. The lines are always crazy long (even during off shopping times. I love Jewel-Osco, but I cannot stand to shop at this one anymore. I will now be going to Trader Joes across the street. Feel free to join me.
For the most part fruits and vegetables are usually fresh but if you do not keep up with the date on the package you can get screwed. The fish and meat department has really improved most Jewel and Osco stores as the fish comes in fresh every day except Wednesdays. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful if they dont have a product you want they will get it for you within a few days and make sure keeps coming. Keep up the good work Jewel. As far as the Osco Drug Dept if youre not buying something off the shelf Do not get your prescriptions filled at this store. Some of the staff is completely irresponsible and rude.
Mixed bag when it comes to certain items but they sometimes have great sales on produce. Also, they have the BEST house made guacamole. Not kidding, Ive recently had a string of bad guac from all sorts of different stores and while I was skeptical because their Jewel house brand guac was just in a clear container with a $6 sticker on top, it was REALLY good. Hidden treasure.
By far my favorite grocery store, and in particular the one on Kedzie and McCormick. When a store like that offers everything its Community needs, you know youre in the right place. They go out of their way to accommodate the particular neighborhood, and those in it.
Waited in line for 10 minutes, and right before it was our turn, the cashier said she was closing the line. We had 4 items to buy. When we started to say that it would have been nice for her to tell us, she got loud and stated “They don’t pay me overtime!” We asked to speak to the manager and she called him over. The manager, Anthony, stood there and did and said nothing. No apologies or anything. As we continued to express how annoyed we were, she started yelling “This man is harassing me!” We were certainly not harassing her and had our 3 year old with us. Completely disrespectful and rude, and this is why they are losing to Trader Joe’s.
My last time coming here. The lettuce is wilted, the bell peppers dented, the green grapes sour. Its winter so I could overlook that but they were not well stocked in other ways. They had one generic frozen stir fry, no bagged spinach, no diet dr. Pepper (when I asked was told that wasnt his dept). Given there is no snow storm in the forecast, I found the lack of stocked items frustrating and incomprehensible. The checkout lady was very helpful and polite. She was the reason for two stars. Going to Traders Joes across the street from now on!
Every worker I have came encounter with is rude. Brought in my reusable bag looked away for a second it was stolen and the worder laughed in my face and mocked my accent. This place is terrible and Trader Joes is down the street, go there. They are actually friendly.
I totally get that everyone cant afford to shop at the Whole Foods across the street. But I wish they could, because this Jewel Osco is a really poor substitute. Limp produce, mass market meat, and a general sense of poor management and failure. The lighting is bad, and the lines are really long on weekends. Again, I wish everyone was lucky enough to shop somewhere better.
Ughhhhh. Thats about all I can say at first. If you dont mind old produce and terrible customer service, long lines and dont mind being carded by 3 cashiers on the same visit, furnishing 2 valid IDs (passport, drivers license) and 1 picture id (UK Visa) just to purchase 1 bottle of champagne, this is your place.
I guess they make do with the limited amount of space they have. It seems I cant often find what Im looking for there. The outdoor entry area smells bad. I really only go here for the basics and because its close. Id rather shop at the Dominicks on Dempster or in Rogers Park. Theyll have some work to do to compete with the Whole Foods across the street and the soon-to-open Trader Joes.

My experience with this jewel store was very dissatisfied due to the fact that the employees complain about their management I experienced at a cashier who had alcohol on her breath and they dont seem to care about their customers and Ive been shopping there for one year but no longer so thats my experience

2021-08-12I know that this Jewel-Osco gets a lot of stick, but that seems unfair. The only time I had a negative experience was when they rearranged their aisles. I felt like I had Alzheimers as I wandered around getting re-oriented. That said, its good to walk into a produce section that features its organic selection first. The produce is almost always in great shape (bananas are notoriously hard to keep green) and are re-stocked quickly. The deli was a good selection of cuts, and theyre happy to give you a sample or two to get the cut right. Everything else is as it should be - its produce section may not rival Valli, but its better than TJ, and its frozen section is much larger than Vallis.

2022-05-29This is a smaller, suburban store, but it still has a decent selection, and their prepared sandwiches, desserts and entrees are quite good. Customer service has been quite uneven though. Some store employees are helpful, others—particularly some of the checkers—don’t mind throwing a little attitude your way. Some people complain about the ever-present panhandlers at the store’s entrance, but they seem rather low key and harmless.

2021-12-24Why youd allow people to solicit in front of the No Soliciting sign Ill never understand.Update: Yall really need to do something about that because theres no incentive in coming here to buy groceries with my family when I have to walk by these people guilt tripping costumers with their imposed troubles on folk who just want to come here and buy. Theres no way yall cant just hire someone to keep the entrance clear.

2022-04-15They usually have what I need. Kind of wish they did the ham, turkey and cheese sandwich pack like another Jewel does. Deli selection here is okay compared to other stores in the area but at least the prices are always right 👌

2022-06-30Just like all of the other Jewel- Osco locations we have visted. But the store was arranged differently. It was a larger store. Very clean, we did buy the suff that was needed on our list. I have visted here 3 times before.

2022-06-22They Have Terrific T-Bone Steaks on SaleSometimes. The Prices Range From $3+ to $5+. Theyre Great for Grilling, Broiling in the Oven, with Salads, Bake Beans, Spaghetti, Corn or Potatoes on the Sides.I Buy the Steaks at Jewels in Evanston where I live and in Skokie.

2021-05-25They mostly come at night…mostly. They, being the insanely large orders where 1/2 the items are out of stock. I’ve closed this store twice hunting items for Shipt with scarce success.

2022-05-16Great floral selection, and the employee that wrapped the flowers for me was very nice...he did a great job, while training another employee!

2022-06-25I often buy fresh vegetables and fruits from here. The payment machine is often malfunctioning and it took 10 minutes to solve the issue last time.

2022-03-03I love this Jewel!Mid - day Thursday, full of old people, just like me!And Dijon mustard is 50¢ a bottle! This is not a misprint!
