Rating this for what it actually is - obviously not a four star hotel in the general sense, but if youre evaluating it as a no frills inexpensive place to stay, which is exactly how it presents itself, it does very well.I needed a cheap but not scary room for an overnight visit to prepare for relocating to the area, and having been, Id recommend it to visitors looking for this type of place, with the details below. The room was clean (and they honored my request with the online reservation for a second story room), had enough space, and felt secure with multiple locks. The desk staff were very friendly. And free parking, that alone is a huge plus in area hotels. The free breakfast is adequate, nothing exceptional, but not disappointing. And for the caffeine fiends, theres a Starbucks literally next door. The location is walkable to many things for that matter. There were two downsides: first, its just expected with a motel, I guess, but the choice of either being fully exposed to anyone walking by or using blackout curtains is always a downer for me.The second was specific to this location: tons of fire trucks going by the somewhat odd intersection out front. Im a city person for life and usually dont even notice sirens, but it seems like because of the intersection, as soon as they were right by the hotel, theyd turn them on loudly, so it wasnt the usual siren going by sound so much as sudden unexpected blasts which did keep surprising me including waking me -which never happens - a few times. Light sleepers beware.
Rating is because of the price and location. Beds and room where clean upon arrival, quiet space and room service was good.. We didnt stay in the hotel much as we were out seeing the city and beach. But the TV had only regular channels, no hair dryer or iron. Breakfast is canceled during Covid, but it did not state that when booking so Heads up. Had a misunderstanding with the desk clerk as he thought we had more than the people we had stated but he quickly apologized and came back to let us know he was sorry. So all in all would stay here again.
So I had to stay in Chicago a little longer than planned due to repairs on my truck which were taking longer than estimated. I was making my bookings in 2-3 day blocks, when I made a mistake of not noticing I missed a day in the reservation. Having been sold out online, and check out time came, the front desk agent working was resilient and provided the best customer service by working with expedia along with my situational needs, to get me booked the one night lapse in reserving a room, saving me from having to worry about packing up suddenly at last minute and having to scramble finding a hotel for only 1 night only to have to come back to this property, all without my truck. Fantastic hotel for what it is to be honest. Simple, easy, great housekeeping staff, and knowledge and attentive check in staff who want your stay to be enjoyable. Thank you to all Heart ❤️ Chicago Hospitality Staff for not throwing a unessicary wrench in the middle of my trip!
I stayed there once for several nights. The place is old and need a real upgrade the bed comforters were almost ripped and you could see spots on linens eventhough they wash them regularly but dont replace them with a new one. The staff was very helpful and friendly. You dont have to make a reservation to stay. And prices are not bad even in a high demand season.
A stay here should cost $50 Fri/Sat nights and $35 all other nights!!!! everything from the rooms to the vending machines are outdated my room didnt even have hangers hanging in the closet area my television didnt have any HDMI inputs it was a box television no USB outlets but they surprisingly had Wi-Fi!
I was in town visiting my parents, and had to find something close by. First of all , very rude desk clerk, promised us adjoining rooms, which we didnt get, paid well in advance! Did get rooms next to each other though, and they were clean, nothing special though! The breakfast consisted of a basket of packaged muffins, pastries, generic orange juice, and a dirty container of milk. On the other hand, the maids were awesome! They were very efficient. You would think for $130 a night, (we stayed two nights) per room, we would have at least have gotten a decent breakfast! The stars are for the maid service.
This motel was fine enough. The staff wasnt friendly or professional (based on three separate interactions), the breakfast area was unkept & pretty gross (spilled milk / cereal and dirty dishes left out), and other guests were loud & disruptive. The location was good for where I needed to go and they had WiFi (however, the password didnt work).
Nice clean little Motel. Yes, the rooms are a little dated, but all our rooms had a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting. Great water pressure in the shower! For the $$ value, this motel is definitely worth it. Located in a nice neighborhood, with bars, restaurants close by. Just a quick zip up Lake Shore and your there! Free Wifi, though the continental breakfast is a pass. Free parking for guests. If your looking for a great alternative to downtown hotel prices, this motel is a great option!
This motel is a gem! Its a bit of a time warp with their mounted tube tvs that only have a few channels and 1970s decor, but I kind of like that type of thing. I was thrilled to catch old Johnny Carson shows on one of the channels. It fit the feeling of the room perfectly. They do allow smoking in some rooms so it will smell like cigs in some rooms. Even though its dated, its clean and spacious. Nothing frilly about this place. Its one of the most affordable places in the area and includes parking, which can be a big expense in Chicago. Its a classic! Ill stay again for sure!
Great spot to relax, but they can use a few upgrades. Better wi-fi, modernized the bathroom, flat screen TVs, a few cable channels would be nice, and rearrange the outlets closer. The front desk staff are cool, just kinda upgrade to todays standards it will be just right. 👍
UPDATE: See below for previous review. All I have to say that nothing has changed. Still the best!!!! was just there end of jan 2020.Excellent motel. I have been staying there since the 90s. Safe neighborhood and polite staff and private parking. The rooms are neat and clean but dated. (50s 60s fixtures) However, that adds to the charm of this motel. I highly recommend it.
There was no air conditioning and my son felt so sick with a headache in the morning. The man working when we checked in said the reason why was because it was still freezing weather then warm weather then freezing weather again and the owner turned off the air conditioning. When we walked in the room was set to 80. We are not accustomed to that and we were told to open the windows and it was a safe neighborhood. We did feel safe but I didnt want to leave having the windows open so unfortunately we had to leave with that hot room and the air for some reason kept running maintaining a room which my family is not used to and we had to deal with headaches and my son did feel sick. Other than that it was fine just wish it did not advertise air conditioning. My family also did enjoy the breakfast and the parking was wonderful too. The hotel is located in a very convenient spot with access near to the Field Museum and Shedd aquarium which we enjoyed during our stay. It is also near an array of restaurants that are available within a couple minute drive.
Its not fancy, but its clean and well maintained with a great location and a fair price. Parking is free, as is wifi, and there is a continental breakfast. Id suggest bringing a nicer towel from home, or request extra from the desk. Rooms have actual keys so make sure you can carry it with you, $5 deposit for key.
This hotel was inexpensive, cozy, clean and the staff was friendly. I gave it a 4 and not a 5 because there was no refrigerator or microwave. However, the guy at the front desk let us use the microwave to warm our leftover pizza :) I will always come back here to stay. The shops along Clark was in close distance so we spent the night shopping, dining, and getting deserts. All in walking distance from the hotel. Also, if you get the chance to check out Barrelmans Tavern across the street do so! The owner is super awesome and has amazing taste!
As a broke college student this was very affordable and a lot nicer than what I would expect for a two star motel! Definitely bring your own towel. Private parking and it’s free which is super nice considering you usually have to pay. Also there is a tavern across the street that is super good and decently priced. There is also a Mexican restaurant down the block from the tavern which is cash only but soo good and definitely worth it! Would definitely stay here again even if I had other choices in Chicago!
I really enjoyed my stay but in the morning when I was getting dressed and I was naked and they were in the room I felt very uncomfortable. I was not trying to stay another night or extend my stay by hours I just asked him could I put my clothes on and that was a major problem. But other than that it was the pretty awesome stay they had all of the amenities and the room is really clean.
Our Airbnb reservation fell through and we needed a place to spend a couple of nights. All the hotels in Skokie were full (a good distance from Chicago for a reasonable price) and this place is closer for a cheaper price than the Skokie hotels. I paid around $113 a night for a full sized bed. It is definitely dated and not like a 3 star hotel, but had your bare essentials (body/face soap bar, a packet of shampoo and conditioner, old/non fluffy towels, a TV, a landline, and a couple of hangers). They also had complimentary breakfast but I was never awake in time for that. The bed and pillows were amazing actually. I slept like a rock. Im docking points because of how thin the walls are. You can hear the cars and people outside, which is problematic if youre a light sleeper. Even though I would not have given this place a shot if other hotels were available, I wouldnt mind spending a couple nights here again. I felt safe. You have parking for a car and the door automatically locks.
Safe place. Clean room and bathroom. If you are looking for a place with lots of bells and whistles, this is not the place for you. The room does not have a blow dryer, microwave, or mini refrigerator. If you are looking for a clean room, a reasonable rate, in a safe neighborhood, and FREE parking and Wi-Fi, this is the place for you. It is within a reasonable distance to a laundromat, a Walgreens, and the train--we walked to all three. Friendly staff, and a Continental breakfast. It was just what we needed!
There is no way to book a reservation online, you have to call and do it over the phone. The continental breakfast was pathetic and the dining room smelled awful. Despite it being October, our room got incredibly hot at night and the air conditioner was loud and barely even put out any air. The only way to cool the room is leaving the window open all night but this part of town doesnt look particularly safe. Also, Saturday morning I could barely get any hot water to take a shower.
Delightfully adequate! Heart O Chicago is clean, has reasonably comfortable beds, and includes parking, which is a significant added value for the low price point. Wifi is included and appeared to be strong, along with password protected and private. There are some available channels on an old box TV, but the signal isnt strong. But youre probably not visiting Chicago to watch TV in a motel! The neighborhood is near a fire station and can be noisy, so bring ear plugs if youre a light sleeper. For anyone who finds Chicago hotel pricing for 1+2 to be prohibitively expensive, but doesnt want to have a shared room in an Air BnB, Heart O Chicago is a great choice that offers privacy and a pleasant experience.
I would have rated slightly higher except for the owner is the rudest, most disrespectful jerk I have ever dealt with as a customer. He yelled at me during the check in process and I would have left but every hotel was booked. The rooms were VERY outdated but were very clean. The air conditioner leaked onto our hanging clothes in the closet area. The tv is a 19 inch old box tv and the buttons did not work. This place is ok if you just need a cheap place to rest for the night but be prepared to be disrespected by the staff.
Man were to start... good service, clean rooms, no refrigerator but ice machine, the free continental breakfast was excellent cereal with fresh milk, OJ , apples , oatmeal and muffins. Well lite area never felt safer in Chicago. + really big parking lot one way in and one way out. Its also cheap for the area. The wifi was excellent and never droped me once and its fast.
No amenities not even a refrigerator or a microwave you have to ask permission to use the ice the maids constantly bother you and invade your space without your permission and have lost a few of my inexpensive but personally important items. Extremely overpriced for what Little you get I am only staying here with my roommate because we are waiting for an apartment to open up.
I had to cancel today . I have the flu 😷. Things happen in life we only human. They didn’t refund my money. So for future reference I want ever stay there . Talking about they got strict policies. That place looks like a dump. Are you for real? The clerk was rude the couple of times I did call them for directions before I got sick . I should had cancel then .
Very clean rooms. This is an old style motel.First the negatives. Small Continental breakfast. Median on street prevents left turn into entrance. One way streets surround it.The proprietor has weird habit of hanging up abruptly on phone conversations. No thank you or goodbye.Positives are cheap rates, free parking. White Castle 1 block away. Free wifi. Some updates. Bring small extension cord. Only one outlet per room.Built in the 60s. Some street noise until midnight.Busy street.Bring a small fan or white noise device. Diverse neighborhood. Nearby Dona Chio Huaraches Mexican cafe, great food and low prices. If youre and experience traveler with patience and you just need a clean cheap place, this is it.20 minutes to Wrigley.
Your typical run-of-the-mill motel. No frills, but thats as expected. Rooms and bathrooms were clean. Have a sparse continental breakfast daily...coffee, cereal, packaged pastries and muffins. Within walking distance of great restaurants and boutique shops in citys Andersonville neighborhood.
First of all, people need to realize it is a motel. If you want to stay somewhere nice and hospitality oriented, then find a hotel.Heart ochicago is your basic, no frills, older motel. I got everything I expected from it: a safe place to sleep. The beds are sleepable but others might not feel the same. There is no refrigerator or microwave so have a cooler or dont bring back leftovers. There is also no hair dryer. My biggest complaint was that the room was very warm and the windows do not have screens so we did not keep them open at night.Parking is free but first come first serve. The continential breakfast is free and has the basics: coffee, tea, cereal, apples, milk, some juices and donuts. There is a 25 deposit due at check in, no matter how you reserved your room. Presumably for damages plus $5 per key issued. If you call to make a reservation, be warned that when they take your info down, they write your credit card number on paper. Their computer is seriously outdated and they appear to track things on paper mostly. When we asked if the area was safe, the man at the desk did answer our question honestly: Its all right. 2 miles down its not so good.Because we knew it was a motel, our visit met our expectations. Would I stay here again? Maybe if it was 1-2 nights.
If you spend enough time in Chicago youll be sure to encounter this classic motel and come to understand her niche appeal to the citys seedier elements. Appropriately priced, acceptably clean, and centrally located on the north side of the city, this motel is a staple to travellers and residents alike.
Thank you so much for the use of your toilet... it was very clean.15% occupancy last night. Ask for discounted rate. Was refused very kirtley. With all that competition I didnt realize how shabby the Heart OChicago is. Too bad, this auto club member, will be notifying to AAA, REPORTING; disappointment and discourteous impression the front desk clerk left.
I am rating this motel 3 out 5. Clean, no frills place, a bit overpriced for the facilities, and deserved 2 out of 5 until the check out.The front desk employee named Zone, was cutting coupons from local newspapers to be provided to the customers, and he gave me lots of instructions on how to navigate Chicago as a 1st timer, I thought he was friendly and helpful and he pushed the motel rating higher with one more star to 3 out 5.
A friend came into town for the weekend and decided on staying at the Heart OChicago. Its a bit tricky getting into the parking lot depending on what direction youre coming from. Upon entering the room, I was quite pleased with the level of cleanliness. It has a very retro vibe, without any hints of old or rundown.
There cannot be any possible reason to live here. I should have gone to the motel 6 near the airport, which would have been cheaper as well as bigger. The room is a matchbox, which is excusable given the location. What is not excusable is the fact that there is no cooling in the room in June! There is only heating and I had to leave the windows open at night. The wifi is a joke, and there are a total of 2 charging points in the entire room, and they too are too well hidden and away from the bed to be of any use (my wife wanted to use her hair iron). They have no hooks for towels in the bathroom (another basic thing which is missing in the bathroom) The asian guy at the reception looked extremely uninterested in whats happening. I have lived in motel 6s a lot, which is usually 60$, so i was expecting at least a similar deal when i paid 100$ a night hereMy suggestion, live a little further and take an uber to go wherever. Also, I am pretty sure most people giving this place 4 or 5 stars are paid by the hotel owner.
NEVER STAY! We recently stayed there and reception service was horrible. There is this Asian guy who sits and he is a liar, unethical and cheat. He ignores everything you say. We had a baby with us still he continued to ignore us and not to anything. I would say if you see that guy just take your business somewhere else.
Always clean, usually friendly. Great and unbeatable location for the price. Ideal for folks attending gay and lesbian events in the city proper. Smack in the middle of Chicagos historic Andersonville neighborhood. Close to Andersonville, Edgewater, Rogers Park, Devon, Loyola, and Skokie.
Extremely overpriced. The heating and air unit looks like its from the 50s. The bulky TV was so dark you could barely see any picture. The style is 60 years old and the management is rude. Locals never would go here, its almost all people from another country that dont now any better...
I read the comment below about Zone, which is what swayed me to stay at the Heart O Chicago for our night in Chicago. At check out I also had the pleasure of meeting him, and had to post about him... Without saying anything he picked up that I was foreign, and pulled out his own city map, showing me where was safe to go and where wasnt, how to get everywhere and what to see as a tourist. He asked me if I wanted it, I asked isnt it yours? to which he replied not if you need it.... He then marked everything out clearly on it and gave it to me, and told me that even though I was checking out, he would allow me to park my RV in the car space until I left the city later that night. Zone is a helpful, generous and genuine man, who deserves a PAY RISE!! :P
Totally clean super classic motel. Another victim of the -fake bad English totally false claim that there are bugs here thing- obvious some hotel chain pays people to post this idiotic crap...price fixing- its wrong. Anyway this place is a a cool, clean classic motel at a reasonable price...hooray!
Daily house cleaning I doubt, as soon as me & my wife opened the door to the room there was an old musty odor in the room, no soap or shampoo in the bathroom, the bed sheets had stains, the television had 2 stations, had to charge our phones on the floor cause there was only 1wall outlet towards the floor & no table close enough to put our phones on & there was no way to move a table cause they were attached to the wall & the walls look like they havent been wiped down in years.

2022-05-24Very decent budget option.Pros: Free parking, central AC, bathtub, exhaust fan in bathroom, excellent water pressure in shower, walkable neighborhood with mass transit options nearby.Cons: Can be noisy (building is on a busy corner with lots of horn-honkers; mercifully this doesnt go all night though); carpet in room needs to be removed and replaced with laminate flooring (bring your flip-flops).

2022-04-03Rooms were a bit outdated, however our room was clean and smelled clean. Parking was free so that was a bonus. Walls are a little thin and you can hear a lot of noise outside your room. The room had hest, which we were happy about as weve stayed in similar motels that didnt have in room heating or cooling.Check in was simple, staff was friendly.Continental breakfast was not available at the time of our departure, even though the website stated it was served daily from 7am to 10am.Would recommend as an inexpensive place to sleep for a short stay.

2022-06-26This motel is saturated in the exhalation of the messureless amounts of narcotics being consumed and sold there everyday. If you enjoy the TV shows The Walking Dead and Cops then you will love this motel. Be sure to have some interaction with the Ring Master who works the front desk during the day. He is a real piece of work.

2021-10-24Very nice nostalgic place to stay. Rooms are very clean. Sets you back to the 60s for a bit. Street noise is a bit loud, but tapers off at night. Beyond their control, so cant blame the hotel. All in all, a great place to stay.

2021-09-26Great basic motel in Chicago. 1950s style. Spotlessly clean. Owner / Manager a little too gruff and tart. Plus they advertise Breakfast but have a sign it has been discontinued. If they are not going to present it, quit advertising it.

2021-09-15A bit outdated but good if you need a place to sleep. I was in town for Bike the Drive and just needed a bed close to the north starting point. Luckily I didnt need to use the shower amenities because the tiny shampoo/conditioner packets probably would not have gone very far. TV was a tube TV with a barely functioning remote (sleep timer button did not work, nor did most of the buttons). Not applicable for me but something to note: not wheelchair accessible.

2021-08-20When I made my reservation I was quoted $83 a night when I got there it was over $100. I confronted the front desk person about that and he basically threw my credit card at at me and said we dont want you here anyway. I said I just took a cab here all I did was ask why it was more than what I was quoted so he ended up checking me in. The room was clean the bed was comfortable the hotel is very dated as you can see from pictures of the bathroom Ive never been on a toilet that was that low. I dont think I would go there again. But it was known as a Chicago institution the best thing about it was the sign outside aspictured.

2021-09-15Not goodI made a reservation for a non-smoking room. Checked in and was given a smoking room and was told that this was the only room available. Went back to the office and somehow they were able to get me a non-smoking room, but the non-smoking room smelled more like smoke than the smoking room. Had to find another place to stay but was still charged for one night. This place is old, dingy, and kind of sketchy, and the service is not good.Ive tried calling 5 times since to speak to someone in management, hoping to get my money back, and they keep telling me that management isnt available or to call back later.
