Half Price Books in other cities:
Excellent selection of everything.1/2 price?? I dont think so.The older the movie the more it costs. I wanted to purchase a movie that was about 33 yrs old & it cost $7.99 ! Really? A new movie at Walmart is $5-8.Dont give you hardly anything for what you bring in. Had brand new 2021 books & they offered pennies!! No thanks
I love this store. And the people who work there are wonderful. If every store had employees like these, there would probably be world peace. The store is huge. And there is such an incredible selection of merchandise. How can you possibly shop here and not find something to love?
A great little gem of a shop! In these days of internet shopping it’s enjoyable to be able to physically flip through the books. Such a selection, so many decisions, fabulous prices and shopping carts! A book lover’s dream. Several stores in the area can make for a dangerous shopping spree. Different items at different locations. I think I’ll go now…
This is a large and well stocked HPB store and it is so very, very TIDY! It is so neat and organized. Even the magazines and childrens books section were perfect. This store has a larger antique, vintage, and collectible section of books than other locations. If you love HPB stores this location is a treat. 📚
Place always smells terrible. The book selection is never great. The service checking out today left a lot to be desired. The clerk was rude and condescending. It is none of your business if I choose to recycle the bag you offered me and no, I don’t appreciate having to wait in line while you carry in with another customer about the tragedy of people not getting vaccinated. I didn’t realize only card-carrying Democrats are welcome there. Won’t be returning.
This is such a wonderful bookstore, prices are low and they have a wide selection. This place brings such a joy to my life. My one complaint is how rude one of the staff member was to a sweet old man. She was extremely mean to this costumer for absolutely no reason. I felt so sad for him. The employee’s name is Judy- I felt so appalled at her behavior that I wrote her name down to remember to write a review for her. All the other staff I encountered was very nice and helpful though....just not Judy!
Its a very good place Define books and DVDs in a lot of other things if they dont have it theyll search their system to find it for you when you go there planned to be there a while theres so much to see and so much that you could buy a very good place to go to get things that you really want
They where very nice, but the quality of the books I brought in was better than the same ones I saw on the shelf.one was a book no more than 8yrs old in perfect condition an it normally costs $15 an I was given nothing for it,not I a place Ill ever go back to the selection is not all that.
Sellers Beware: test the waters by offering a few items at first, instead of a full collection all at once. I wholeheartedly support local businesses, but there is something about this companies culture that rubs me the wrong way.Be prepared for an offer that is pennies on the dollar of what your expectations are.I sold many (30+) video games and was ready for a fair offer in the $30-$40 range (and store credit at that). I was offered $11, and told it was a cash offer — store credit is not an option. I had to take a pause for a moment. The only consolation the “gunner” appraising the items offered me was a comment... “unfortunately most are not in good condition.” This wasn’t true. All discs offered were in great condition with very minor scratches at best. Some game cases were in fair condition, and a few were disc only.In any case, as you can tell I regret not walking away and taking my business elsewhere. I offer this experience as a lesson to others. Don’t make my mistake.
They should start calling this place Full Priced Books. I used to love HPB, but I grow tired of picking up popular titles Im interested in and seeing them marked $2 less than new at retailers. Same issue with CDs, seeing any big name artist or album starting to get marked $8.99. Pretty soon theyll be asking what they were new.
What can you say about HPB? Lots of selection and an inventory that is ever changing. Great selection of vintage and collectible books. Huge board game section. Huge video game section as well. Maybe the largest video game section of any HPB in the Chicago-land area. Also one of the larger stores.6/17/22: masks are still recommended.
The best bookstore I have ever been to. The staff goes above an beyond to ensure that you find what you need. I went here about 2 weeks ago looking for books for my brother. One worker came up to us and asked if we needed help finding anything. I told her a book that we needed, and she led us to find it. Not only that, she looked through the books on the shelf and picked out the one that was in best shape for us. She helped us find 2 more books that we needed and even went to the counter with the recently donated books and looked for one that was in great shape. I am always in awe of how wonderful and caring the staff is here. I look forward to coming here, and the prices are the cherry on top. At Half Price Books, I truly feel welcomed and that the staff makes sure that you leave happy. I cannot express how much I appreciate this store.
The store if is a good place to find books ,dvds, etc. ,but I am now boycotting stores returning to the bad days of requiring masks. Get serious if you dont want to get the covid shot dont require the rest of us to not be able to breath or see protect you with false science.
Staff is helpful. Decent selection of boardgames. Inventory doesnt get rotated around too often so if you come here often you will see a lot of the same books over and over again. Sometimes you can find a nice gem in their back clearance section. Overall I really enjoy coming to the store and dont have too many complaints.
What can I say? It wasnt breath-taking. It wasnt bad. It was just normal. Its what you would expect. My only complaint would be the slight expense on some books. The book I got was $13 with no awards or anything. Please live up to the half-price name! Staff was amazing and friendly.
My favorite bookstore, open again after 4 long months of coronavirus lockdown. Browser-friendly store staffed by helpful, knowledgeable employees. Reasonably priced. Eclectic selection of titles, both books and music. Not just bestsellers. I never walk out of there empty-handed. I love this place!
I found this place by chance, and now its my new go to place. The books are mostly used, but in great condition...so the price is always right. I found $50.00 dollars of books that I just had to have. German books for children, cook books, art books, a few new maps for my husband and several great childrens book, each for a dollar.....and this store has so much more.....like games, toys, puzzles and alot of new gift items too. A real hidden gem!!!!!!!
Some of the staff that work behind the book buy back counter talk way too much and act like everything is a joke. I dont frequent this store much anymore and my visit on 8/18/21 confirms why: CD prices going up.. they are now pricing their clearance CDs for $3, and also they put scratched CDs out on the floor! The prices need to be lowered. I dont think ill be back for quite some time. I used to love this place!
This place is hands down one of my favorite stores. They have an awesome selection of books, movies, games, puzzles, and music, all at really reasonable prices. This half price books also does a once monthly acoustic open mic night, which is really fun and really well done and out together. Its the type of store I go to every week just to look around because their selection is always changing! 10/10 would highly recommend!
Extremely unprofessional staff. Vito treated me awfully both times I walked in. Practically ignoring me (on his phone mind you) until I said something and then all I got was. Oh.. whats up. Really professional. Didnt even bother to help find what I was looking for. Hope he treats his staff better than he treats his customers worst manager Ive ever had the mispleasure of knowing
A couple years ago I went to sell my entire collection of books that range from 100-150 books consisting of Goosebumps, Harry Potter and other children’s books. They only gave me $25 for books that they probably sold for at least $200 minimum (according to the prices of them on their website). I never got around to actually file a complaint or write a review back than. It’s just one of those things that I took as a learning experience. Anyway I’ve gone back a few times over the years and it’s a pretty nice store.
I adore this bookstore chain. Its always an adventure going in to one. You can find all sorts of great books, games, and even some art kits/supplies. This location is a little small compared to others in the Chicago land area, but I always enjoy the atmosphere and experience. I wish this one had a bigger clearance section, but its still an awesome location. Step inside to find new and old books as well as some vintage ones!!
I love their stores, the book selection and prices are very good, and of course I usually go to check out their record collection, which is surprisingly very good. Ive purchased probably 15 records from this store over the last few years that have been in good condition and at a very good price compared to what Id pay on Discogs. Worth a visit for any book or music lover.
They have really good books you can buy for a cheap price but I definitely don’t recommend selling your books here. I went in with two boxes of books that contained a lot of classics that are really popular for high school students. I only got about $10 for about 20 books hardcover and paperback. You really don’t get the money the books are worth because I have bought a classic book there that wasn’t really in good shape and annotated for $12. I really don’t think it’s worth selling them there.
This place has plenty of affordable books for sale. The staff is friendly and helpful. They also sell some vintage knickknacks and useful journals/notebooks that are actually quite nice. The atmosphere/ambience music is great (jazz and vintage feeling songs). One time I walked in on a live performance of musicians just jamming in the middle of the store. So yes, overall, I love this place. Check it out!
Fantastic book store! Great prices & selection and friendly service. I bought 4 new books for $12- the retail prices were over $40! If you are looking for the newest bestseller the day it comes out, or a warm coffee-house atmosphere this may not be the place for you. If you are looking for a huge selection of books at great prices come here. They even have cheap CDs, stationary, greeting cards, games, etc, too.
Great selection at nearly unbeatable prices. Their name should probably be Half Price Media and More because they offer so much more than books. This is your one stop shop for movies, music, games and more. I highly recommend this place. I always leave feeling like I made out and seldom can find anything I buy for less.
Never know what you may or may not stumble across here... Last time I was here, I found a 3 book, hard cover series I had been wanting to read for a long time by a favorite author. All 3 were in great condition & I got them all for right around $25. Not to mention, at every location I have ever been to, the staff has always been so helpful & pleasant. They will also have books sent from other locations for you too! Thank you Half Price Books!! ❤️
Huge selection and friendly staff. Weve been visiting this store for over 10 years and they are a bookstore made for the person who lives and dies for books!! They have new release books, old out of print books and everything in between. They have CDs, toys, games and enough things to browse through that you could spend days and not come close to getting through it all. The even have a discount section which can oftentimes have a great many hidden treasures, and for only $1 or $2 it is a pure steal and worth the time to look through their collection. We go at least once a month and we will continue to frequent the store for as long as they are around!!!!
I love going here. The store carries a huge range of books new and old. A lot of modern. All for reasonable prices. I even love looking in the clearance section and finding so many great deals and so many good books. And it doesnt feel like Im dropping an arm and a leg when I go shopping there l.
Love this place. They have just about everything you could want in regards to books, movies, music, etc... although sometimes certain things are slim pickins, but they get different stuff in all the time because they buy used stuff from people. You can find all kinds of collectibles here too along with old and new comic books, graphic novels, and just about any kind of book you might want or need. If they dont have it, theres a good chance they can order it.
Most employees are nice but don’t try selling your things here if you are trying to get a good deal. most of what they do is buy really low and sell really high. even gamestop gives better prices then them and that is saying something. fun to walk around but always check online because there may be better deals there.
Great staff. Great selection. Might need help the first few times there when trying to maneuver and search for certain books. Being a boardgamer, they have a great selection of both new and used board/card games to buy (Definitely, a plus in my geeky opinion 🤓) IDK if they over or under spot books and merchandise that they buy back for a customer that would want cash for but had an okay time selling to them old books and games
Book stores are kind of a dying breed. But its nice to still be able to peruse shelves of books and relax for a few. They also sell games and various electronics. Everything is in nice order and clean. Would be nice if they offered some kind of cafe and seating area but Ill take what I can get, considering book stores arent exactly plentiful.
Great used book store with a large selection. They do offer new books, but not many. I rarely find the specific book Im looking for (unless it was a top seller or is on school reqd reading lists), but I usually find something I didnt know I wanted at a great price. Its especially good for purchasing beautiful volumes of the classics, like Shakespeare, Dante, Mark Twain, etc.If youre willing to wait, they can almost always order through book youre looking for.
I love this store for books!! I come here alot. I would have rated it higher, but two things always get me when I come here is the very strange characters who shop there. Some of the people are also very rude and just stand in your way so be aware of that. The other thing is the workers are hit and miss. Some are really nice and helpful especially with ordering books from other stores which Im so grateful for, but some of the workers are unprofessional. Ill hear some of the conversations they have and there very inappropriate. All in all a great place, but like any place it has its flaws.
Great place to sell and buy used books. They tend to have books in great shape and great prices. The only complaint I have is that often what you may be looking for is not in stock, but they do have a website on which you can search for books locally or have them shipped from out of state. I wish they would advertise their site more.
Great selection, generally terrible prices. They tend to get in lots of new, exciting items every time Im in, and in all fairness I have been able to (very occasionally) find decently-priced items. But the selection tends to be overshadowed by the awful pricing, which is often at the very top (or exceeds) online retailers. Employees are nice, store is clean, so overall good for looking around, bad for actually purchasing anything.
Excellent place to buy (and sell) used books, CD, and DVDs. Some gaming systems and accessories are available as well. Since its used, stock varies and you probably wont find current top sellers- but great for picking up what you might have previously missed. Friendly service.
I asked them if they offar around same buy back as a college book store if I brought my college books there and they said yes. I brought my books there had a couple of brand new text books with online scratch code still on there and for 11 books they only offard $50 this is nowhere near the price they offard at the college book store. They lied to me. They lie and lowball Women by at least a couple hundred dollars. Pigs.
The employees were so friendly and helpful! I cant remember his name but he went above and beyond for both my friend and I. We both decided the customer service was so amazing, we are always going here first before Amazon or any other book store. It is clean, organized, and full of treasures, love this location!
Brought a car full of new book, Cd’s DVD’s and audio books, plus a few things that were not brand new but in excellent condition. Help in was great and that employee very friendly and caring. When I was called to be given what I made, I nearly died. It was the price literally of 3 books I gave them. I was not happy with the way I was treated by this different employee, and was not given any other options or even my books back. Would never go there again nor recommend. Even the prices that were listed on the books they were selling in the store were not even half off the list price.
Can’t give 0 so here it is had some cocky big mouth kid behind the buy counter change all the prices of the comic books I wanted he went full eBay price not sold mind you but higher then eBay buy it now prices. Told him why would I buy at double price books when I can buy at eBay cheaper long story short I dug out all the good books”did his job for him “ then he tries to charge me double price eBay takes 14% but he wasn’t hearing it emailed the corporate office no help there. So basically I like half price books just not this one crooked cheaters at this one avoid at all costs
I wish there is a 0 star rating!!! This place is a joke when you go and bring your items in to sell!! Been here a few times to sell some things and yeah I understand they gotta make a profit too and I didnt agree with the pricing sometimes but this time my boyfriend literally brought in over 15 DVDs and maybe a handful of BRAND NEW books....they offered my boyfriend $1.50 for EVERYTHING!!!! Im sorry but Im officially done coming here. Im not about to let you give us $1.50 for items that youre going to get at least 5-10 dollars a piece!!! Ugh!
Forget about trying to sell anything to this place. Everything they buy from customers they check online first, and then offer you a price accordingly. Imagine my surprise when I returned a week later after selling them a stack of comics they gave me a couple dollars for to find one in the window with a hundred dollar price tag on it. Ive felt ripped off every single time Ive sold media here. If it werent for the clearance wall of books, Id never return.
I love to just peruse around half price books. You will never know what you will find. However, with that being said a lot of the items you can buy online for way cheaper. But in my opinion with books it is nice to feel them and look deeper than just an online synopsis.
HPB is a good place to find some of your favorite past reads or even newer books. They have a fairly large selection of many genres. Also a good selection of used movies, new and used board games. I tend to stop by monthly to check on whats new and the employees are friendly and eager to help out.
Not the same since moving away from Books/publications, over run, crowded and loud, more like record comics shop & whatever toys & such, sell all these now seems priority. Staff friendly, clean environment. Sticking with B & N, other book shops & resale shops here on though.
OMG a real bookstore! They have tons of stuff. They have retro gaming consoles and much more. They also buy used books and electronics. I had a ton of old books that I didnt know what to do with and someone told me about this place. You have to check it out for yourself! Give yourself plenty of time because there is tons of stuff to see.
Whats not to like. Great titles at half the price! I could spend hours here. They also sell Electronic devices like iPhones, other smart phones, readers, etc. Great place to check for textbooks if you are going to COD. They have even more titles than most libraries in the area.
Definitely a gem in the suburbs! They let you self serve your choice of caffeine or decaf coffee while you loose yourself in a story or 2. Some new and some used books, movies and music to purchase at Half Price! Got some good reads for good deals already. Highly recommended for those on a budget looking to indulge in some good olfashion entertainment!
I started coming here ages ago as a game collector. I found some really cool stuff to add to my collection here at reasonable prices. Sadly, those days have long passed, for the most part. Game collecting has gotten super popular now and prices on everything have gone WAY up. Every once in a while, though, I still catch them sleeping or at least find something decently priced. I found a complete copy of a game in almost pristine condition for about 1/5th of what it goes for on Ebay a couple months ago. That said, my complaints about game collecting aside, I still really like this place for other reasons. Browse the other sections and you never know what youll find. Ive found books, movies, and music of every genre imaginable here. If you have any interest whatsoever in some sort of geeky/nerdy hobby or subject, youll probably find something cool here. They also have a good selection of new and classic board games and they do RPG nights here, too, if you go for that kinda thing. I like the employees here, too. They seem to enjoy working here and try to help customers as much as they can. They also handle long lines as the registers pretty efficiently. Massive store, too! Ive been to a few other Half Price Books stores in the area and Id definitely call the Bloomingdale store the biggest.
Were starting to clear up 43 of accumulated stuff in the house, so took a big box of books in. You dont get much for them, but we would have just donated them anyway, so its not the point. The staff is friendly, theres room to sit and read, tons of books, LPs, CDs, games, all sorts of things. The odds are you will go home with more than you brought.
Very disrespectful staff I went today with my kid who has special needs and she will not wear a mask which by the law she can go to the store with out the mask. They basically told us to get out from there . Rude horrible disrespectful mean people . Never will go there again .
The Store: This store has a wide variety of books, music, and movies. I firmly support any second-hand store that offers this kind of variety. During certain points it tends to offer a lot, while offering nothing at all. You can find quite the wonderful surprise gems here, however! Quite clean and very bright.Keep in mind, that this store does not compete with Gamestop or Play-N-Trade, so game prices of $9 for a PS3/360 game at Gamestop, will be $29.99 here. The Staff: This will be my main complaint. As with any store, the staff can make or break the experience. The hipsters that work here have an air of snobbish around them. They wont come up to you and ask if you need help. They wont even take notice of you unless you track them down. Unless you catch them on a good day, even when speaking to you they still retain that air of superiority to you. I have had great experiences with them, but most irritate me to my core.If you ask them where a certain book is, they say It will be in their section. If you want them to find it, they wont even bother. They say If its not on the shelf, its not here! Which isnt true, as some people take things and either hide them, or misplace them. I would certainly hate to be on this crew during inventory and actually track down these items! When you insist on them finding it, they go to their computers miffed, type in the item and say We can order it for you. This means they want you to pay and guarantee them money before they even bother searching for it. Again, sometimes they can have good days, but for the most part they are too busy playing with themselves and having hipster-power-huddles at the Buy-Counter to even notice you. Let me say that like any badly staffed store there are two or three associates that stand out as really good. The Buy-Counter: This is where you will be horrified to find out that your prized collection of items are only worth .50¢. They go to their computers and want you to think they are looking up some Beckett of prices, but actually they check -AMAZON- of all places! They look at the lowest cost on Amazon, then make you an offer even lower than that! Do NOT have high hopes of a return! Your items will have to be in high demand to get a high return (name of the game). This HPB is definitely worth taking a look at, but not because of the staff. If there was another closer, I would suggest going there instead. Finally, avoid their coffee.
My favorite HPB location, hands down. From the friendly and helpful staff to the speedy sellback procedure, this store sports everything from live music to first editions. Their record collection is a terrific find, as well as a good collection of journals and stationery. Visit your book paradise here!
College text books, video games, greeting cards, vinyl record, action figures.Books? Typically cheap options--has some new, and other wise old. A lot of unexpected finds. Some rare and collectors books.Genres: action, adventure, fan fiction, comics, short stories (and short story collection), books from forever ago on things now on really cares about anymore but hey at least it is cool to say you own it, recipe books, bibles, fantasy, sci fi, ... [Blah blah blah books blah blah check it out.]
OMG THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! Take my money!!!Not only is the selection and pricing awesome but the staff is super helpful. Into Japanese Manga on paperback? - cool they have it, looking for some old school PSOne classic? - its there, want some random poster only available in the overseas collectible version of Alien on VHS? - OF COURSE THEY GOT IT CUZ THESE GUYS FIN ROCK!And shout-out to the sellers and donators because theres definitely some well-kept second-hand gems in here!
They over price anything collectable and try to use the out of print excuse. The comic book people at every one of these have no clue what they are doing. They want to pay u 20% of ur comic book value but then try to sell them anywhere from 100% of value to 150% of value. U want to just go to buy a book or maybe even a video game have at it but u would be an idiot to sell or buy any collectables or comics for that fact from here. They make comic shops look like bargain stores

2022-03-15It was my first time visiting Half Price Books. I loved walking in and seeing so many books, movies, CDs and much more. The staff was friendly and helpful and the energy in the store felt great. I found what I was looking for, which had to do with photography. I also saw books about Buddhism which I enjoy reading and learning about. The prices are very affordable. I am old school so to hold a book in my hand whats the greatest feeling. I will for sure go back and I will recommend this bookstore to all those who love to read. Five stars!

2022-04-03Have a very vast array of book available both old and new. Also available are video game, movies, board game, and other merchandise such as action figures, toys and such. I found some old books from video game series I used to play at a steal of a price. Staff was friendly and helpful. All in all, a nice little used book store and I will definitely be visiting again.

2021-10-30Good location, well organized and with some pretty good books. Selection is iffy if you need something specific, couldnt find any mycology field guides in the section. Still found some nice short story and poetry collections! Some books on shelves are damaged, with torn pages so check them before you check the book out! I wanted a field guide for seashells but the book had ripped pages.

2022-05-13You can always find something to buy here. Fun selection of always changing stuff. Selling is super easy, but dont expect to get much for what you bring. Theyll offer you like $1 for something theyll sell for $20. Sometimes theyll tell you they cant offer you any money for an item, but if you leave it with them anyway, youll see it later on a shelf with a big price tag. If you know you have something valuable or that someone else will want, youre far better off selling online on your own. But if youre looking to quickly make space and unload a bunch of stuff, you can easily do that here and walk out with some amount of immediate cash. They have occasional warehouse/fleamarket type sales for surplus stuff and those are where you can buy things for insanely cheap.

2022-06-02Great selection of books. Always found something of interest. Brought in books to sell and was very unhappy with the price I was paid. So, as long as youre looking for books, 4 stars. Selling, 2 thumbs down.

2019-05-14Love it! Great store, a very calm and relaxing atmosphere inside. Clean and organized very well. The employees are always doing something (in a good way!). It would be great if they had an area where we can listen to records before purchasing them - I think it would add to the atmosphere and make it more enjoyable!Especially because I wanted to purchase an AC/DC record that was labeled as having a scratch on it (of course on the best song in that album), I wanted to listen to see how bad it was, but the gentleman said there were no record players to listen to it on- so I didnt buy it unfortunately.

2019-07-29The kind of place you can get lost in. Thats the kind of bookstore this is. A welcoming place where you can walk in with food (smaller items) and pets, and browse through a nice collection of books, movies, DVDs, CDs and many other cool items that I didnt even have the time to get to, because they have so much. And the prices are so reasonable, itd be hard to leave without buying something. Id definitely recommend visiting to get lost in that good book, with some of the few places to sit and read or find something you didnt know you were looking for.

2022-03-07I mean really just the best store there is. I’ve been going there for a while and it is my place to chill, read at corners, find cool books and even Christmas shopping.
