I visited the morning we had frozen fog on all of the trees hoping to capture the garden with the beauty of winter. Regretfully the garden had been exposed to the sun too long already. Nonetheless the garden albeit closed for walking did offer some piece and relaxation just by being around it. During the open season that starts in May - the garden is a beautiful place to visit. Visiting hours are limited and you can actually see them in the bottom of one of the photos, however definitely worth scheduling your time around them. There is no charge to visit the garden however when you walk the grounds they do appreciate it a cheerful donation. Located in the fabyan forest preserve off of Route 31 theres ample space for picnicking fishing walking biking and if you go across the river there are more things to see including the windmill.
I am giving it only one star because of safety. The garden is beautiful but the lady working theres work ethic was terrible (Id give her a negative star if I could). We started to explore the garden around 3pm on a Thursday before we knew it was 4pm. A visitor like ourselves approached us asking us if we knew if there was another gate to exit since the entrance gate was locked. We tried to call the number listed on Fabyan Villas website and all we got was a recording. The other visitor was able to climb over the gate and was kind enough to help us as well. My mom has sciatic pain and has nerve pain in one of her legs too. With the help of the other visitor and two kind passerby gentlemen we all were able to climb over the fence. My mom was in a lot of pain. There are two gates to this garden and both were closed. The other visitor said that the worker had seen her approaching that way and still locked it. She didnt realize the worker was locking the gate at the moment but the worker definitely saw her there. Had the worker done a final walk-through she would have known that there were people still inside.. forget that.. she knew someone was still inside!! she saw them!!!. This is a safety concern. My parents are seniors. Had it not been for the kind strangers helping it would have been very difficult for them to get over the gate. Please be aware that you may locked in if you dont leave right before 4pm because safety is not their concern.
I enjoy the Japanese Garden. While the interior of the garden us not always open, I will walk on the groomed paths around the outside which allows you to see all points inside the fenced in garden. An abundance of small wildlife including occasional birds of prey make for interesting nature walks. Its a little awkward to come here for a walk and discover a wedding is taking place, but the garden is funded by donations so I assume they get paid for those events.
Do not recommend. We paid 3$ and when we want to make a picture the lady said you can only use a smartphone. I was disappointed because we wanted to make a family photo with camera not a photo session. The garden is small, not friendly for small children. We drove over an hour to see this place because of positive reviews, but for me they were too high.
Its very lovely, and I can see where it would be relaxing. They recommend a $1 donation per adult that enters, which is fine, but I had the feeling that they werent going to let us in if we didnt have it (& they might have - it was just a feeling). Also, its very common for us to not carry cash on us, so he prepared it you go to have a few dollars on hand. The people there are very knowledgeable, it seems, and very helpful and nice.
Such a cute and beautiful garden! Its small, so dont expect to be there long. If you stop to take pictures, take a look at the pond, etc. it might take you 10 minutes to see the whole thing. Its free but accepts $1 donations. Strollers arent allowed; it makes sense as the path is narrow, but it stinks if you have a little one.

2022-06-27My 79 year old parents traveled 90 minutes, after reviewing the website to ensure the gardens were wheelchair accessible, but were turned away when they arrived, being told wheelchairs were not allowed. They had to wait on a bus that the group traveled on until the others finished their tour. Website is deceptive and those who run the facility are uncaring and heartless.

2018-07-09We visted the Japanese garden and enjoyed it very much. The garden is beautiful and very pleasant. The ladies who welcomed us were very friendly and informative. We were also provided a info guide for our stroll. The garden itself is small however there is much on the property to explore. There is no entry charge (donations suggested).

2019-03-01We visited the Japanese Tea Garden during one of the few times it is available for winter tours. The one-acre garden commisioned after the Chicago Worlds Fair by Colonel Fabyan was lovely and interesting all dressed in a light snow. Our docent was the teamaster who was very knowledgable about the history and meaning of the garden.

2020-08-07Don’t go into the garden with high expectations. It is definitely a nice little garden and it’s very pretty but, really, it’s nothing too special. If you’re in the park I would definitely recommend checking it out.Unfortunately I haven’t been able to see the Villa Museum yet on account of it being closed during the COVID crisis - so this review is just about the garden. It’s really fun walking across the moon bridges and you’ll certainly get some great pics.
