I loved the store Peace Works...so many beautiful things to see at reasonable prices. From many countries. I could spend hours in that store. The owner Julie is just a gem. She feels like a best friend. I went back the next day because I hadn’t explored everything in her store. There is also the general store run by a lovely couple. I got wonderful gifts for myself and my family at both places. The town is something out of a story book and the people are wonderful....some were my professors back in the day.
Charming village to walk through though not many businesses and those there have very limited hours. Apparently there used to be a good restaurant there. Would be nice to see one back as otherwise its a long drive to Alton or Grafton. Easy walk to a good view of Mississippi River. Also parking lot there as well. Many nice touches of flowers, interesting and old fashioned buildings, a museum, several churches, bed and breakfast, general store, etc
This was a beautiful little town that I wish we were able to explore a bit more.As far as the General Store is concerned, I was impressed with the offerings that were available to bridge the gap for the residents of Elsah in between trips to Alton. This little store had everything from cereal, milk, and meats to toilet paper, diapers, lightbulbs, and screws.
Love Elsah. So quaint and more like another century when one enters. The General Store was great and so was the owner who was filled with the stories of its history. The lady in the resale shop next door was charming and resales items to try and save the building some one is trying to tear down. Highly recommend taking a tour of Elsah and talk to the interesting nice people there.
Cute little historic town with narrow streets. We went in search of a bakery, but theres very little commerce in there. Its mostly homes. We did discover a little general store that had baked goods brought up from St.Louis. A loaf of blueberry bread and a couple of specialty sodas later and we were on our way!
Makes for a nice quick drive through tour. Stop in the Elsah General Store for great snacks and history snip its. There are signs around town to tell history. Look for the granite buildings—the town founder gave free plots of land to those who built using granite from his quarry! Theres a park, cemetery, and small Church of Scientology college in the town as well.
This is a historic quaint little river town with not much of anything which is its charm. Filled with people whos main source of income is Principia College. So if you want to be indoctrinated into the local cult of Christian Scientists and their fenced in heavily guarded compound college on the ridge and have a beautiful view of the Mississippi this is where you want to live.

2022-04-08Every Sunday, my wife and I go down the River Road, sometimes as far as Hardin. We always drive through Elsa. Its a quiet, peaceful little town thats like stepping back in time to the mid to late 1800s. The residents and owners of bed and breakfasts spend a great deal of money, time and effort maintaining their property. It is a lovely community for sightseeing.

2021-08-21Elsah is a very nice small town set in the 1800. The town is very helpful and welcoming. Being located on the Mississippi River gives it an old romantic feel. Green Tree Inn is a great place to stay the night and connect with your spouse. While your there checking out the small town stores is a must.

2021-04-11Beautiful little town! Quaint, picturesque, like a trip back in time to the 1800s. The local shop has all sorts of goodies-candies, baked goods, sodas, etc. Shopowner Blair is a wonderful, friendly gentleman who represents the classy folks of this town. You MUST visit Elsah-nothing else like it.

2021-06-19Visited the History building. The gentleman in charge was very knowledgeable if the past and current history. We also walked a Blick to the general store. It is very charming. I found a cookbook made by locals, homemade chocolate and tea!! Owner was super friendly.
