A local gem! This wonderful little museum is chock full of interesting Elgin historic artifacts and stories. Highly recommended.
Beautiful setting, well organized and informative displays. It’s important to understand local history and we are fortunate to have a rich history in Elgin! A good place for learning for all ages. Danny’s Pizza is nearby, make an afternoon of it, lunch at Danny’s and a visit to the museum sounds like a nice afternoon. No, I was not paid to write this, I just love Elgin and this museum. :)
Old Main. Nice little museum in the heart of Elgin and is a gem of history buffs. Learn just about anything about Elgin from knowledgeable staff. Pick up some more great stuff, and reading from the gift shop. Has an elevator. Is easy on the pocket and everyone should get a yearly membership and visit often.
In a historic building just off Dundee Avenue or Route 25 the museum is easy to get to. The first floor is dedicated to the origins of Elgin and its founders. More interesting to me is the second floor that emphasizes manufacturing in Elgin, some old Elgin High School memorabilia and more. There are Elgin steel kitchens, Elgin Outboards, Elgin Coffee, Elgin bandsaws and the Elgin Watch Company represented there. Some exhibits are permanent some look like they change. I didn’t make it to the third floor to look at old photos. For the $3 admission I’m sure I’ll be back.

Being a lifelong Elgin residence, I found the place fascinating! There was a lot of information I didnt know about my home town.I went with a school group and we learned so much while having fun! The guides were informative, and patient while they helped us make apple pies, and butter. I will be going back.
Really cool place for learning where we came from. They also have an extremely helpful staff. They have an offering of books available about Elgin that are pretty cool. Most of them are also available at the library if you don’t want to purchase.
My husband and I decided to visit the museum this afternoon- it was cold, rainy, no good movies playing. AND it was a place Id wanted to visit for awhile. I love the history of how towns were developed. What a pleasant surprise. There was much more to see than Id imagined. Fantastic old photos and maps of early Elgin. We found the street where my husband lived as a young boy and saw how undeveloped it was then. Well come back for another visit - we both loved learning about the Giffords, Kimballs, and other founding fathers.
Lots of interesting exhibits. Does a good job at telling both the basic history as well as pointing out unique things about Elgin. Definitely a hidden gem.
Grew up in Elgin. Know a lot about the town but the museum gives a glimpse into Elgins checkered past, its glory days, the raging 20s and its economic peaks and lows. Its wonderful halls are perfect for school field trips and private viewings.

This is a very authentic museum that features some od the most important and interesting features of Elgin history that any one can appreciate. Very knowledgeable staff and very welcoming, too!
We lived in Elgin when we came from Germany in 1954 lived there until I went in the army in 1963 today we live in Florida, family still lives there!!
Great place to visit and learn about Elgin. Very friendly staff. My 8 years old had fun with the scavanger hunt game and loved his prize.
Some very good history. (Dispite the fact of Liz & the receptionist unprofessional behavior & they call cops to be there & put children to block the walk path exit, until I leave.)
I love my visits to the museum. Its a treasure trove of Elgin history -- oddities and all, and the building is a gem.
Nice local history museum. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and found ways to include our son with Down syndrome.
We ( a class trip) lived in the 1800s, we had to carry water. Wash and ring clothes, hang them up on a line. We even got to make butter!
Just recently had one of my great grandfathers Elgins restored. Finally decided to swing by to check out the museum here.

2019-03-20One of the Best museums Elgin has to offer. You can explore for hours every time and still come away with new information. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous and the curator is World class. Necessary in a town with Elgins rich history.
