I have gone multiple times to the institute. I mostly just get trims and I understand they are students, but they usually have blown me away and have not previously had a bad cut. This was the first time I got a cut that went poorly. I went in to get a trim on my curtain bangs and some light layers, and I ended up with a shelf of bangs going pretty far back. I called back asking what could be done and they said they could have someone fix it. The student Reagan listened to my concerns and made my curly hair look AMAZING. She confidently took what I was saying and put layers and even converted the shelf and flowed into my hair. Reagan was incredible and embraced my curly hair and made it even lighter and bouncier! Cannot recommend Reagan enough. I am confident going to the institute because even if it goes wrong they get it right.
Ive been going here for two years and have never had a bad haircut or color! The students are professional, friendly, and talented. Ive had trims, cuts, balayage, and color toning in the past, all of which was excellent. My most recent cut last week--a side shave/undercut--was by Jasmin, who did an awesome job, and I love my new look. Keep up the great work!
I had the best experience with Caroline here. I loved my haircut. She was very respectful and followed what I wanted perfectly. She did a great job with my curls and gave me advice for how to care for them at home too. I definitely want to go back to her for my next cut!
I was very fortunate to have gone to such a beautifully kept shop, Aveda Salon, Clark Street. Julie Schneider gave me an unbelievable cut under direction of a lovely woman Petra. I had shoulder length hair and needed a very good cut. I gave Julie free reign as she was very friendly, knowledgeable and simply charming to have given my hair shape…Therefore, a very satisfied customer. 5 *****Melinda 🎰
Went here for a haircut today for the first time and LOVED the entire experience! The people, service and space are all great. Ceridwen was amazing with my hair. She really listened and checked with me at regular intervals to make sure I was happy with where things were going. Such a wonderful experience and I’ll definitely be back!
BEYOND rude front desk staff. The instructors are given totally different information than what the front desk deems as “actual” information. My 1/2 inch trim took 2 hours last Friday. I expressed my discontent then. The student is… a student and is learning. That’s fine. She wasn’t confident in the cut and went and got the instructor. The instructor told me to go ahead and flat iron it at home (since that’s not a service I asked for) and if it’s uneven or I’m unhappy, to come back “within 2 weeks.” My “cut” is uneven, I called exactly one week later to schedule a time to come in, and was told I can come in for a new service but they won’t re-cut my hair. I immediately asked to speak with the floor manager/supervisor and Grace (who, and I quote, is “a manager when managers aren’t around”), was counting down seconds and minutes of our phone conversation. She was beyond rude and for the duration of our 10 minute conversation, displayed supremely disgusting behavior. I’ve only had a conversation like this with someone who is in customer service one other time, and it was a Douglas J front desk staff member 2 months ago, at the same location, no less.I’ve gone back and forth several times in my mind whether I should write a review or not, only to come on here and find someone whose had the exact same experience not even two days ago!The sense of entitlement, particularly within this establishment at the front desk, speaking any kind of way to customers is deplorable. Grace concluded the conversation by saying, “I can offer you a refund and will put on your profile you are absolutely NOT welcomed back ever again” and hung up. Very classy.I’d like to add that I have never in my life had to write a review like this on any establishment, ever. Feel free to check my reviews. There’s a first time for everything.Treat people with kindness, period. Also, you never know who is on the other end of the phone.
I love the reviews on here from the people that dont recognize this is an institute haha.... Its a school, the stylists are learning and thats what you signed up for! The two times I have gone, Ive had really great experiences though! The students have been professional and friendly. Ive only gone for trims/re-layering, but my most recent cut and blowout with Grant was lovely - looking forward to hopefully seeing him again here, or at a salon when he graduates!
Where to even begin. I have gotten my haircut several times here before and have never had such a bad experience. It was as if my stylist had never cut hair before. I sat down and said how much would 2-3 inches be and she couldn’t tell me. She had to ask her instructor. She trimmed my hair but not enough so had to go back and do the whole trim again. After that she was supposed to do layers which she didn’t know how to do so the instructor (who was very busy) quickly showed her. Once he was done she did not finish but rather just continued to blow dry my hair. I had also asked for face framing which she did not do and once again the instructor had to do it. These instructors are very busy and did not have time to cut my hair so quickly gave me some face framing that I could have done myself. I understand these are students but this stylist (Jasmine) should not be allowed to be on the floor. Awful experience and am highly disappointed.
Ndeyiah was so helpful! I was nervous about getting my first chemical peel, but she explained the procedure and aftercare thoroughly which alleviated my anxiety. I appreciated that she was able to explain why each step, like washing, toning, etc, was being taken. She was also friendly and outgoing which makes me all the more likely to return for a facial in 4 weeks. Highly recommend!
Brianna did a great job! My haircut and thermage straightening treatment was so relaxing that I kept apologizing for falling asleep. She listened to my suggestions, took her time, and showed great care for my hair. And she was funny! Get in there before she graduates next month!
My first visit getting a haircut at this institute. I’m very impressed with the skills of my hairstylist Reagan :) She was very nice. My haircut came out way better than I would from my regular hairstylist. Came out the salon with a little bouncy Bob haircut 🤩 I can tell she’s ready to graduate
The reception staff is mixed with very friendly employees and others that are unhappy, unprofessional and outright rude. I was misgendered by one of the receptionists. Pronouns should not be assumed, and no young person should be using Sir or Mam in 2022.The haircut was uneven and the color touch-up messy and too dark. Although the student was nice, she was not confident and unsure of herself. She was also hurried and somewhat of a downer. She didnt have time to style my hair because she had another client coming (?) The haircut and color was to be checked out by the instructor, however I had to go find the instructor to correct the mistakes made by the student. There wasnt much that could be done about the color, and I left thinking it was OK until I saw myself in natural light. I now have to go to a professional salon and get a new haircut and color correction services (which are expensive!) I wouldnt recommend Douglas J Aveda. From the front desk to everything and everyone else, they need to be retrained. You get what you pay for. I would not recommend Douglas J Aveda Institute at all!
I was so impressed with my service here today. My stylist was ready for me right on time. We spent a few minutes discussing what I wanted and then she got to work. We had a great convo & the overall atmosphere was fun and relaxed. I’m super pleased with my haircut and will be back.
Worst service ever! Told service was shorten last minute without even an apologize and taken as a matter of fact you deserve this attitude. Because you paid less so we can do whatever we want and not treat peoples time with respect. The so called supervisor Christian Vanbrimmer was the worst ever!!! He was rude and the attitude with the constant mocking tilt of head and what do you want look was just unbelievable that this is comes from a brand that Ive been with for over 10 years. Today was a special day for me and I booked ahead of time and pushed schedule just to make the appointment on time, and they only dont even have the courtesy to apologize for their own mistake of being late...... I will never go here anymore, and highly encourage anyone going to be aware of their snarky attitude and last minute change of time. Im just sorry to see one or two arrogant people ruin the whole brand that I liked for so many years.
I had Kaitrin C. and she was wonderful! Excellent service, was very personable, and I was extremely relaxed the whole time - just what I needed. The only thing I didnt like about the Institute is their school wide policy that students are not allowed to receive tips. As an alumni of the Aveda Institute of Minneapolis, I know that students arent paid for any of the services they provide, but the Aveda in Minneapolis allowed students to receive tips (cash or electronic payment) if the customer offers. I believe the Douglas J Aveda Institute in Chicago should change this policy, because that way students will be compensated for their hard work!
This would have been a 5-star review had it not been for the unprofessional attitude of Ryan at the front desk. During the blowout portion of my service, Ryan radioed to a supervisor on the floor accusing my stylist of performing a blowout that required an up charge. The supervisor confirmed to Ryan that it was a standard blowout that appeared to use curling techniques due to the wavy nature of my hair. This accusation made me feel “spied upon” and discredited the professionalism and integrity of the stylist and the supervisors on the floor. Upon checkout, I communicated to Ryan that his accusation was unprofessional and violated the extraordinary service that the stylist and supervisors had provided. He asserted that it was his right to question the services provided on the floor and corrected my calling the student a stylist in a very condescending way. When I indicated that I hoped he would not retaliate towards the stylist and their supervisors, he threatened that he was going to blacklist me from booking future services at Aveda. I have never in my 10+ years of supporting Aveda been treated so rudely.
I have previously had nothing but positive experiences at the Aveda Institute. All haircuts and facials here - as well as the Grand Rapids institute - have been nothing but wonderful. The students are always well trained and I am a grateful happy returning customer.HOWEVER:I scheduled a last minute hair cut today around 12:30 for a 3:15 time slot; there were a few slots open this afternoon before booking. I got a text at 2:43pm while on my way to this appt that the student had called out, and to rebook with the phone number provided. I called and asked about the other slots that were open for this afternoon & was immediately met with attitude from someone at your front desk. I would have had absolutely no problem rescheduling for a later date, as I know I booked last minute and the student was I’ll, which is exactly what I said to said front desk worker. Yet again I was met with attitude “Like I said, I have no appointments for you today.”I was called back by said front worker & informed that the way that I spoke to her on the phone was “against policy.” I informed her the way she spoke to me was absolutely unacceptable for a customer who has always been kind and gracious to your students. She said “I think you’re not remembering exactly what happened.” She hung up on me.I called back, and asked to speak to a manager. I was met with “just send her to Christians voicemail.” I did leave one; please feel free to give it a listen.I believe your front desk staff needs some extra training on customer service. While she may be a student as well, this could be an excellent learning opportunity for how to speak to other adults - especially paying ones.I will not be returning to the institute as an incident like this could result in someone sabotaging a haircut or facial. I will be letting all of my Chicagoland friends know whom I have referred to the Aveda Institute with such high regard for your school that you lack the professionalism required by a place of business and education. After reading other reviews here, this seems to be a consistent issue with your front desk staff & for that I am sorry. It must be really tough finding employees nowadays to replace ones who make a toxic workplace.I look forward to hearing back from you and your staff.
I had a wonderful first time experience at the Aveda institute in Chicago. My dermaplane facial was top notch and my lash tint turned out great! It was an extremely relaxing experience. Also, there was no huge pressure to buy products after. They pay attention to detail and you will definitely leave satisfied!
As a alumni, I’m very disappointed in this place. Brianna, did a good job for what she knew how to do with styling my hair. That’s literally the only reason I gave 2 stars. I wanted a wash and go (which is just setting my natural curls) but left with a finger coil which is a different type of style but it looks ok. So whatever, they clearly lack education on how to work with curly hair so nothing has changed since I attended. However, my issue is with the front desk staff. My appointment wasn’t on the books after speaking with multiple ppl about rescheduling and reassuring I would be able to get all of my services prior. When I arrived they didn’t have any appointments for me and was told they don’t do the spa service on Tuesdays. Ok so why was it booked? And why am I getting reminders? Then the story changed to the artist did a no show no call. I was visibly irritated because they just wasted my time. After calling around for cancellations, the staff assured me I could continue with the styling service. I wanted a shine treatment and wash n go. Was quoted a different price for the services than what I payed . 4 hours later I left disappoint. It’s the lack of communication for me. Do better. Will not be returning. I was hoping this school was better than I left it but clearly it’s still the same.
I love coming to the Aveda school because I always learn something and the students are generous with their time and good at communicating. Julia S gave me a perfect bob and took care to share products and recommendations with me afterwards. I was just sorry I couldn’t tip her!! Thanks Julia!
Erin Mullen was my stylist and she was great! From the beginning, she was aware of what I wanted and asked clarifying questions to make sure I got it right. She was so pleasant to talk with throughout the appointment and wanted to make sure she cut my hair how I wanted. Erin was professional and polite, and I love how my hair turned out! I recommend going to her and plan to make a color appointment with her in the near future. My overall experience at the salon was great, and I loved the energy in here! Everyone was great.
Had an incredible experience with Logan Forrester! I went in for blonding after being long overdue and she required minimal instruction throughout the foiling/process. She did an amazing job toning, as well. It turned out beautiful! I couldnt be happier and I would definitely book with her again!
I got a great haircut and had a wonderful experience getting my hair cut by Siena. I was brought in right at my scheduled appointment time. Their instructor went over the plan before the haircut, and checked progress twice. Siena was confident and professional with great conversation. I will not hesitate to continue to have Siena cut my hair from now on. 12/10 highly recommended!
Absolutely pleased with Desiree. I wasnt sure if I wanted bayalage or high light. After discussing the differences between the two, and which one will get the look i wanted, we went ahead with a partial high light. The lift level is spot on with no brassy on the blonde. Thank you! Definitely recommending to my friends😁
This review is directed at the front desk only. Do other people see a pattern here? The front desk, epecially Christian and Grace have been noted in several reviews as being very rude. Yet they still act that way! And Christian is a supervisor?? What? I wonder if contacting the Aveda corporate office would help. I do not know if the school is directly related to them but Aveda would probably want to know as their products are used/sold there. The front desk is often pompous, rude and do not seem to be able to relate to anyone over 30.
I saw some prior student reviews of this place but Im not sure why more students and staff arent revealing to the public about this business. This location is literally scamming students out of large tuition prices and providing nearly zero education for their money and time. The leadership team: Danielle Schewe, Nicole Jentel and Shannon S. in particular need to be called out for actively covering up the fact the school is NOT providing what its selling: career training, knowledge and competent instructors. During my time as a student there I wrote internal grievance emails, watched parents come in to complain about wasted money/time, contacted corporate and even contacted the state. None of it made any change. Not once in my program did I see a teacher demonstrate a proper skin analysis, an extraction or demonstrate much skin care knowledge. We spent MOST of the 750hrs sitting around. Not only is there a high teacher turn over rate but the instructors had zero to little esthetics experience. Students literally described leaving here as traumatized. Honestly , its all a mess and no one should go to this school especially if it may add to the burden of your life situation. Its a business that causes more harm to the community than good. If you really feel called into the beauty field- get your education somewhere else because once you sign the contract into any of the programs you begin to lose money and time.
Hairdresser review:I highly recommend Carly G- she has now graduated-Congrats, Carly! She was always kind, professional and thorough and did an excellent job with the cuts and conditioning treatments.Shennan James! She was polite, sweet and professional, and did a great job on my hair wash and trim. The Aveda products were lovely, and Shennan took extra care to make sure she used the best products for my hair type. Her teacher was also very professional and monitored the haircut. Now general review-I think the Aveda Institute is a great option if you want value and understand that you are being taken care of by people who are still learning- if that isnt you, a school salon is not a good fit for you. Front desk was friendly as well. You cant tip, which made me feel like a D-but it is because they are students, and they cant legally accept tips.
This was my first time at the Aveda Institute and I was not disappointed! I wanted to refresh my blonde balayage and Alexis did an amazing job. She took her time and made sure to communicate what she was doing to my hair. There’s so much dimension in my hair now! Would definitely recommend Alexis Sierra to anyone looking to get a cut or color.
My hair color was completely changed from red to black by a stylist named Chloe after I repeatedly ask her not to put dark colors in my hair! They do not listen to the clients and are not writing down formulas!! I feel like some of these mishaps are being done on purpose! This is the second time I’ve had dark tones put over my brown tone res hair. Terrible staff!! Terrible service!!! Untrustworthy stylist. Chloe a student that claims to be graduating this month did this. The instructor ran over to the front desk and told the check in girl to label it as color did not take. I feel violated!!! This is wrong !Chloe lied and told the instructor that she used the same exact color from last time. Why would you do something like this to your client? This doesn’t even make sense. I complained about the same thing once before! We had multiple conversations so it doesn’t seem to be a mistake!. I want to talk to someone that is over the school asap.
I received a 90 minute facial here during Christmas week as a gift to myself. Elizabeth was INCREDIBLE. She was precise in her recommendations and paid care and detailed attention to my skin during the entire session. She applied product with ease and used the perfect amount of pressure massaging it in. I feel like a new woman and my skin has never felt better! I highly recommend facials here and especially with Elizabeth. Thank you! You have an amazing future ahead.
I had a 60 minute facial with Jasmine yesterday and it was so lovely. She did a great job of communicating the next steps and really listened to my skin concerns. I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated at the end of my treatment. Would definitely recommend booking with Jasmine C before she graduates!
I went for a balayage and when I got home and looked up close I realized my hair was orange (!). My stylist recommended purple shampoo, which I tried when I got home, and it didn’t help. I called the salon back asking if they would be able to fix it (my stylist was super sweet and professional so I felt comfortable asking), and they said they would need to book me again for a completely new service for $42. I gave 3 stars because I felt like this was unfair to me and a missed learning opportunity for a student.
Amber was an excellent stylist. I am so happy with my hair cut. Professional environment, very personable. I also want to note how much I loved to see that the stylists have their pronouns included on their name tags. That is so important and I hope the student stylists take that practice with them after they graduate.
What a wonderful experience. I just left after having a 90 minute plant stem facial with Bianca T. Bianca was professional, knowledgeable, and such a calming presence. My skin looks almost like new, and I am so relaxed that I am about to melt into my seat right now. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Bianca T.
THANK YOU CARLY!!! I am in love with my hair it’s everything I could have ever wanted and people have been complementing me left and right since I left the salon on Tuesday. i have been feeling not myself lately and made me feel like myself again❤️ Congrats on Graduating! You deserve all of the praise in the world! (Not the best photos, but you got the best ones on your phone lol)
Brookelyn E. just did my lashes in the classic/natural style. Oh my GOSH! I love them so much. Theyre natural, full and long with the perfect edge of glam and drama! She was so detailed and precise with an excellent bed side manner. Very friendly and kind. Plus, she kept letting me see the progress. Will definitely go to her again. Highly recommend Aveda (GORGEOUS ambience) and Brookelyn. Now, Im pretty sure I cant live without them! 10+/10!!!
I wish there was something as low as zero stars I would give that out to this particular salon. It was my first time getting my hair colored and my worst experience obviously left me scarred. My grays all around my forehead and sides weren’t covered at all and to call me in for a redo the lady named GRACE was as rude as she could be. She was least accommodating and gave me two weekdays days almost ten days after my first appointment to choose from. When I agreed to come from 40miles away in the evening on one of the days she said sorry we don’t do color in the evenings!!!She was rude, blunt absolutely atrocious.First thanks for screwing my hair and second the worst hospitality and absolutely zero etiquette. Please save yourself some money and peace of mind and do not visit this nasty place.
I had a beautiful haircut done by Shennan J. I came in not looking to lose much off the ends of my hair but knowing I needed to & she insisted that I cut a little more to make my hair nice and healthy. At the end of the service, my hair looked amazing! Definitely would recommend Shennan for anyone looking to look fabulous!
PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE!!!! STRICTLY AVOID THIS PLACE!! My wife went for a hair color at this rookie place and they really screwed up big time. First, the hair stylist did not apply the hair color properly and asked the receptionist (whose name was GRACE) to reschedule the appointment within two weeks. The receptionist, GRACE, was extremely rude & racist and was not ready to accommodate my wife. She said that there was no availability for the next two weeks and blatantly said that she could not help. After arguments she mentioned that there was an availability on one of the evenings during the weekday. When my wife asked her to book on that evening, she took a u-turn and said its not available anymore. Firstly, they did not do their job properly, secondly, they asked us to book an appointment within the next two week, thirdly, they did not have any availability, fourthly, they were rude and racist. Worst experience ever!
I got a 90 minute facial from Shauna a week or so ago and she was absolutely amazing. Very professional and took the time to explain every product which was super helpful. The facial and vibe of the room was so relaxing I almost fell asleep! Highly recommend coming here and requesting Shauna for your next service.
I had a great experience here. I went to get some caramel highlights and my stylist, Emily F knew exactly what I wanted and really focused on that to make everything look perfect. She was very personable and friendly and we chatted the whole time! Would highly recommend going here!
Amber was great!! I was her first African American client and she was fabulous!!I got a root touch up and for the FORST time ever I wasn’t the last client here. She washed my hair and got all of the color washed out. She just seemed to know what to do. And for the FIRST time, she blow dried my hair solo. Thanks Amber!!!!!
Last minute ecommendation to try Douglas Aveda..needed a quick emotional self esteem lift for my teenager.. Erin who worked on my daughter did not disappoint. Did wash, cut, blow and lite makeup finish. My daughter came out with a big smile and a higher self esteem..Thank you Erin and your establishment for helping a despair Mom. Will definitely return.
I had an appointment with Jade in November for a facial and relaxation treatment, and it was wonderful! She was so thorough and thoughtful about the products she used, and explained everything when I asked questions. It was such a relaxing and special day, all thanks to Jade. I recommend her highly! As a side note, I witnessed an incredibly rude customer berating the staff and causing a scene about a minor issue she experienced the last time she was there. The manager, Nicole was called to intervene. She handled this customer in a firm but professional way, and defended the Aveda students in the face of aggression and entitlement. It was really a master class in customer management, and I was impressed to see it.
I went in to get a balayage and haircut from Chloe Anderson, and I am SO happy I was able to work with her. Chloe is talented, welcoming, and collaborative—She listens to your hair hopes and dreams, then meets them with realistic, clear ideas. I walked in with the last residue of box color, and Chloe made my hair look better than ever! I cant wait to see what she accomplishes next!
Loved my stylist! Shame on the school! My stylist Jasmine T was amazing, her box braids were incredible and she really valued me as a customer. HOWEVER, the Aveda school is NOT prepared to take on textured hair. They did not supply the tools or resources for their students. Aveda didnt even have edge cream or understand that I would need an 8 hour appointment for box braids! When I brought this up to the receptionist, she made it seem like it was my fault. It is discriminatory to only have costumers of color need to bring in their own materials.
Edit to the below**I returned a few days later and the staff at Douglas J did a great job getting me a better result at no extra cost to fix the original issue with my hair as stated below. I am much happier and thankful for their commitment to the customer experience, and my student Leslie did an amazing job. Thank you so much!I have been coming to the Douglas J Aveda institute in Chicago for several years for both hair color and cutting services and was generally pleased with the results. However, after my experience today I may no longer be returning for color. During my appointment, I clearly specified that I wanted a bright, icy platinum blonde (no yellow tones). The result was much yellower than desired, despite having shown pictures of what I wanted and having had color done as desired here before. Additionally, I noticed that my stylist was not getting the full highlights very close to my roots at all, even though I had said I wanted full coverage. I asked her if she could get closer to the root, and she said she would try but she was unsuccessful. I have never had my roots looks so bad right after getting brand new full highlights. Finally, my stylist took an hour and a half to detangle and blow dry my hair, something that I expect to take a little longer than normal due to new color, but this process takes me less than 10 minutes on my own. I understand that these stylists are students and are learning, but this was a below average experience and I was very disappointed.
I usually get a great service here ( 5 stars every time for over 2 years). Today, we had a problem with the formula for my colour re-touch and it didnt work well. A second attempt, was only slightly better, but made the session long and late, meaning my haircut and blow out were super rushed!! Lovely student and educator, but just not great today!!
I selected any available student they had and I got Ceri - she was only two months into her schooling and was fantastic. Very polite and professional and extremely careful. If you are on the fence about a student cutting your hair; they have to check in with their teachers before they cut and after they wash/cut so you’re all on the same page. Ceri asked her teacher to cut my bangs so she didn’t “mess them up” and they came out great. Great value! They are students but they are supervised! Really happy I found this option.
Went to school here and graduated. I think a lot of work could be done to improve Douglas J. During my time here, many educators left and/or were fired over the span of a couple months. Most students, including my graduating class, had to go through rotating teachers and staff and were left feeling abandoned. A lot of the time I personally felt set up for failure and quite honestly sometimes felt as though my school days were chaotic. I wish I could say I enjoyed being here most of the time. It’s not uncommon to see stylists crying or having anxiety attacks in the back of the salon either. The management team at Aveda had also taken away literally any place to sit for lunch, leaving the only place for students to sit was on the ground in front of the building to have lunch, not to mention they literally REMOVED any chairs at the back of the salon at some point so that we would not sit there during processing breaks. I honestly don’t think I received the education I am going to be in debt for and I know a lot of students who would agree. The only few amazing teachers that were there got tired of it and quit and the only couple that are still there are extremely underpaid. During multiple occasions, mentors (students who have more hours, like an honors sort of status) would have meetings together during the weeks and would bring up concerns to management or our director and almost always, NOTHING would be done about it. It’s extremely sad to say but I came into Aveda for my tour so excited and ready to start my dream career and honestly it didn’t even take half of my program to realize this school fit was a mistake. It wore me out and gave me plenty of anxiety. When you book at Aveda, please keep in mind your stylists are doing everything they can to accommodate you despite all the chaos behind closed doors. Douglas J Chicago has potential, and if someone doesn’t step in and start making changes, I don’t know how much longer it will survive. Also, PLEASE give Russell a raise.
Another fantastic and professional haircut! Madeline was wonderful and just about to graduate and move on to a new salon. She performed a wonderful and relaxing hair treatment and then gave me a great, much needed haircut. I wish her all the best and would not hesitate to visit her at her new salon.
Gabriela cut my hair today and did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with her because she is a fun and interesting person and we had a lively conversation. Since I’m pandemic-starved for companionship, this was a plus. The instructor was helpful and encouraging, and when my student wasn’t sure of a technique I appreciated the way she stepped in for a bit and showed her how it was done without making it awkward for her.The salon is not fancy but it’s clean and comfortable with a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere. I felt very safe, as everyone was wearing masks and keeping their distance. It did make me laugh a little when they had me cover my coat with plastic before hanging it—it must be extremely rare to catch covid through coat-to-coat contact. But I imagine they’re just trying to make their clients feel safe, and I appreciate that. I’ll definitely go back when due for my next haircut.
I received a facial from Jade this morning — it was AMAZING! She was very professional and knowledgeable on all things skincare. Jade was Al very gentle. The facial was one of the best experiences I have had at the Aveda institute. I’d highly recommend making an appt with Jade for a facial!
Worst Mens Haircut Experience Ever!!!I scheduled an appointment to get my haircut. Little did I know that Id be receiving a tag team cut from both student & instructor. The student had no idea what they should be doing and then the instructor came in to the rescue and does some work (bad work) and leaves it to the student to do the remaining and it went on this way. Horrible experience.Ive been trying to tell them that they didnt do the haircut properly, but both student & instructor assured that its done and I can go to the front counter to pay. Now Im left with a bad and uneven haircut. Please save yourself the hassle and avoid this salon if you want get mens haircut done. Id not recommend this salon at all. Wish I can give 0/5 rating.
Booked a haircut in which my stylist took forever just to trim my hair. I asked for a trim and long layers, the teacher comes to check in and realizes what she is doing. I noticed she was moving slowly but didn’t say anything. He then says to her to hurry, he just ends up taking over, haircut is just ok because he was rushing to get me out of there.
Alicia did my hair so well! This was a quarantine-I havent had a haircut in 8 months-cut and Alicia nailed it. I felt truly pampered and fresh afterward. I wish her luck in her upcoming graduation and any salon should be happy to have her.New addition! Had another cut, this time with Kylie. She did a great job and her enthusiasm made for a really great experience. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend her.
Vanessa A. did a fantastic job on my hair with the guidance of her instructor. I came in with medium-long hair and wanted to lose about 6 inches, and she cut it to the perfect length. She also pointed out a product that is exactly what I have been searching for, so I can maintain the smooth look at home.Edit: Went back for a trim, but decided to go much shorter and Carolyn gave me a fantastic shoulder-length cut! I wish they’d send surveys by email since the only way to appreciate the student stylists right now is the google review.
I have been going to Aveda schools since I was 16 years old so I am aware of the instructor/student relationship and the teamwork it takes to teach them throughout your experience. I had the WORST experience of my life at Douglas J Aveda Institute in Chicago and I will never be going back to any of their facilities. I went in with the intention of getting a trim and shaping my cut. I had two photos of what I wanted it to look like. The student asked me questions about how I normally style it, what products I use, etc. I believe he fully knew what look I was after. He went to get the instructor and the instructor immediately hijacked the appointment. The student tried explaining what I wanted, we showed him the pictures and the instructor asked a few questions about what I wanted out of my hair cut. I referenced back to my photos and knowing nothing about hair cuts or the terminology of different methods I just kept showing the photo. Whatever it took to have this end result. The student that I was paired with had never used the method that the instructor suggested so it took a little longer for him to learn (which is part of it and totally fine). After about an hour of him taking his time, the instructor had to take over because the students next appointment was already there. The instructor finished my hair cut and I was given to another student to have my hair dried. I did not have my hair styled or any other amenity that is usually associated with going to the school (i.e. hand massage, shoulder massage, etc.) My end result looked NOTHING like my goal. I had one major top layer that was never blended into the bottom layer and my hair was majorly damaged from being over textured by the razor. I left crying, went home to call another salon to get me in ASAP to fix their mess. As soon as I sat down in her chair the hair dresser was infuriated that they did such a poor job. I had to cut my hair so short to fix their mess. I am incredibly upset by what happened and incredibly frustrated with the experience I had with the instructor. I hate that my ideas and preferences were steamrolled by a male instructor who tried to tell me what I would like. I will NEVER be going back to ANY Aveda Institute.
Had an incredible experience here! Alejandra did a fantastic job (wax), and I also appreciated her instructor Stephanie for taking extra time to review ingredients due to an allergy of mine, and testing a product before getting started. I felt welcomed and comfortable through my service, and fully plan to return soon. The Aveda Institute is fantastic for trying new things, and with very impressive prices!
Absolutely amazing! Samantha Reed completed my Blonding retouch with an add on service of a toner and styling my hair by a thermal blowout. She was very professional, and knowledgeable about what she was doing. I was put at ease to see how delicate she was with my 4a/4b hair type, especially with it being in its naturally curly state. She did an amazing job! I love my color! I cant wait to go back to Samantha!
I came into the Salon over this past weekend at Clark/Diversey location & Kasey was working at the front desk & she was Super Informative about everything I asked her about & took her time with her explanations & made sure I understood Everything before I made my purchases, appointments & left. I hope you Appreciate Kasey❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have so enjoyed Rachel Vitek providing me with such great skin care at Douglas J. Always warm and welcoming, Rachel has encouraged me to try new products and services to help with my tired and sometimes dry skin. Rachel has personalized the experience and the products to suit my needs over several appointments, and explains to me why they help, and they have! She is enthusiastic and caring and loves her profession, and I am grateful to be the benefactor of that! I leave feeling pampered and renewed. Many thanks!
Im not one to typically write a bad review (especially for a school); and I knew there was a risk of not getting exactly what I want but the result is far from it. Let me start with the good...in this time of Covid, they are following all of the procedures including but not limited to temp checks, face masks, social distancing, and limited customers. Morgan(the student) was very kind, did a good job with the balayage, and keeping me from crying in the chair. This was to no help of the instructor who immediately upon seeing my inspiration picture says it will have to be a two session and nearly impossible. I dont consider myself an expert by any means but I watch enough Brad Mondo to know that if you are doing a double process especially on a medium brown fine hair you do not use 40 volume lightener...I was already set up to expect the worst but this instructor offered no realistic/middle ground solution just reiterated that my hair was real yellow, girl, gee thanks... fast forward to session two my balayage turned into just a full bleach with very little contrast (instructor offered no demo to Morgan who had never done this before) and the color turned out subtle but I was tired at this point and done with putting myself at risk for little return. It looked ashy and blended nicely...until I showered (w/ color care shampoo) and it went orange. Thank god Im only showing people the front of head these days. Gonna wait for this to grow out and go somewhere else to color correct. I know its just hair its more the $170 thats a punch to the gut.
I had my hair cut, dried, and flat ironed by Makayla W. She did an excellent job and I loved how my hair looked and felt. I have thick, curly hair that can be challenging at times but Makayla was highly experienced with handling curly hair and she did an amazing job! I also asked many questions and wanted her advice on hair products/hair treatment. She was extremely attentive and made really great recommendations. I would definitely go back and see her again!
They are students, but led by educators and you get what youre paying for. They also have a window they will fix it in.If you are super particular about your hair, this may not be the place for you, but if youre looking for a bargain with top quality products then you have found your place.
Updating my review from 5 to 3 stars… to even out the 1 star I want to give after my haircut & because the balayage I had done recently by a different student was great.I was so upset when I got home from getting a haircut yesterday. I’ve always had excellent service from the students and instructors here, but yesterday was NOT that. The student said she was going to cut off like 3 inches and she showed me before cutting, but then she cut a huge line across a bunch of hair and it was more like 5 inches and said, “this is what we’re working with okay?”… and I told her it’s shorter than what I want and she kept repeating she wanted to protect the integrity of my hair… I don’t care if there’s some damage left after cutting a few inches of hair, but cutting more than we agreed on is rude and unprofessional. It was too late to do anything about it at that point.By the time she was done and got the instructor to come and look at her cut, it was uneven on both sides, so the instructor, Russ, had to fix it by taking even MORE length off… so I ended up having at least 6 inches cut off… that is way more than 3 inches. Not cool at all and super upsetting when I’ve been trying to grow my hair out for such a long time. Also, I had to tell this student multiple times my hair is curly and to chill with my bangs too because my hair will shrink 3-5 inches when it’s dry. She wanted to go shorter than would look good on curly hair. Sigh. Please educate your students about curly hair… this student obviously has no clue. She didn’t even use any hair products other then a little bit of heat protector spray… so my hair felt super dry and frizzy after she dried it. I rarely wear my hair straight, but asked her to blow dry it so I wouldn’t have to see the mess it would be curly. I’m spending $300 today to get keratin treatment so my hair doesn’t look like clown hair if I wear it curly like I usually do while this cut grows out. It’s that bad.I’m so upset after this experience. I don’t know what’s happening to this place, but maybe it’s time to start going to actual salons instead of beauty schools. I think this is my last time getting a haircut there. When I called to give my feedback the evening after my appointment, they offered a “redo” so I could come back and get it fixed… I don’t need anymore hair to be cut off… that’s the issue in the first place, your scissor happy students. I should have been offered a refund.………………………………………………..Previous:The haircut I received was great! Marianna took the time to listen to what I wanted and didnt push when she recommended I take off more length than I wanted to. She explained what products she used in my hair and gave me curly hair tips. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and professional, including the front desk and instructors. I would definitely go back again, however I do think that the no tipping policy is ridiculous. Beauty school students dont make any of the money the salon makes and I feel like the least they could do is allow them to receive tips, even if they are not expected/required. Although I loved my service and Marianna deserves 5 starts, I might go back to a different beauty school for my next haircut that allows students to receive tips.
Most of the time, I enjoy the whole service here. Some of the students may not be that experienced, but they are willing to learn. However, I had the worst service from Mandy today. When she washed my hair, she didnt go through my whole hair, just washed the top of my head. She didnt even rinse off the shampoo. I felt some bubbles on the left side of my hair. She made some cuts on my back hair, and waited for the instructor to finish it. She fixed my band with one cut, and done. I wasnt sure what my back hair look like. But I didnt want to ask her for anything not have her touch my hair again. For me, she shows no passion or any talent for my haircut.I made the complaint to the front desk, and they arranged the re-do haircut.People shouldnt waste the time on things they have with no passion about.
I was beyond impressed at the skill and professionalism that Alexis V displayed at my appointment. She was just a joy to work with. She was super easy to communicate with and even took extra time to chat with me about how best to style my hair based on my hair type. I am trying to grow out my hair after having a mid-length bob, and Alexiss cut and layering is spot on! My hair feels so healthy and smooth. She is extremely talented, kind and has a bright future ahead!
I got the standard shampoo, cut, and smooth blow dry by stylist Brianna Leey and she did an AMAZING job! She (as well as the other Aveda staff) were very professional and friendly, and I felt comfortable being there. Briana was very skilled and cut my hair exactly how I wanted and described to her beforehand. She really did a lovely job with my layers, too. I got so many compliments the next day at work on my hair! I highly recommend and I am likely to return based on my experience.
Vanessa was awesome!!! she took her time to look through the pictures i brought in to make sure she knew exactly what i wanted. She checked in every so often ton make sure I was comfortable. She did such a good job cutting my hair, and when I asked if she could french braid after cutting my hair she said of course! I was so happy with my cut and braids, even booked a future appointment with her.
I have had a couple amazing haircuts at this place! Though my last experience wasn’t the best. Some of the instructors there can be really rude. I wanted to get some pink in my hair (not too much) and the instructor told me several times that it’s a “school” and couldn’t be done in one visit, which is totally understandable, I just don’t have the money for it. Once I retracted wanted to get color, the instructor tried to push me into doing it. I felt a bit unheard and talked over, which was irritating. Love the stylists though! They do an amazing job.
Vanessa did such a good job with my hair! She made my hair look like I spent a day at the beach with super natural looking balayage highlights. She also checked in with me during every step to make sure I was satisfied with what she was doing, plus she is really nice and cool. 10/10 worth the price, would go again, I only wish that students could receive tips!
I’ve been coming to Aveda schools for my haircut for about 8 years now and have always had a fantastic experience and today wasn’t exception. Big shout out to Sophie for my facial - one of the best I ever received - so knowledgeable, kind, caring, communicative and professional. She walked me thru procedure and then warned me every step of the way what was coming next (ie hot towel, bright light etc).Kelly is also a great student and did my haircut today! She was very kind and professional, in and out in 2 hours and I loooove the cut! It may seem like an easy straightforward cut but she added some touches that made it look special
I decided to treat myself after a long period of neglect. I chose to go to the Aveda Institute on Clark. I had a wonderful facial with Nyree. Her voice and pressure points put me in a serene far away place. Then, the hair. Very difficult to manage, kinky, straight and wavy all on one head. Mine. I expected the usual blow out. However, after much discussion Brittany K helped me to figure out what I really wanted. Brittany curled my wet hair with a comb into gorgeous ringlets. When dry I could do a multitude of styles with this. I got many many compliments. Thank you so much.
It was the worst experience Ive ever had. I booked an appointment for a haircut and highlight with any stylist a week in advance. They canceled my appointment a few hours before my scheduled time and told me the stylist had an emergency and she is not available today. The only thing they said was they are sorry. Although I got a day off from my work, I accepted that and asked them to reschedule my appointment. I went there today again and when I was checking in they said sorry your name is not on the list! I was shocked!!! I was waiting for two weeks to hear sorry again. They are the most unresponsive and disorganized salon Ive ever seen. They couldnt care less about the customers time. (The worst part is that I had selected any stylist option and they had the freedom to assign me anyone)If you care about your time, dont spend it on a salon that doesnt even know what they are doing and whom they are giving appointments.
Really great experience! Check in was easy, everything was on time. I got a back facial and a regular facial and both were great. I feel horrible that I don’t remember my students name but she was great, and very personable. She listened to my concerns, and personalized a treatment plan to address them. I already booked another facial :)
I have never had a bad experience here. I recommend it highly for the value and price point. Getting services from students is an affordable way to get your desired hair/skin/nail services while giving them valuable practice! Ive always felt well taken care of, and the instructors are always around making sure everything is going well and adding any finishing touches that may be needed.
Ive been at Avida multiple times, and its always exceeded my expectations! It doesnt feel like you are being helped by students - the quality is just so professional. The wonderful humans working there are beyond amazing. They check and recheck along the way to make sure youre both on the same page. Better service than at your local beauty salon. And the fantastic prices! 10/10
I’ve been a client for a couple of years and always found the student work good. My latest visit did not go well — neither the student or the instructor listened to me, if the student didnt understand she should have asked but the instructor. There was mo excuse for the instructor. To follow up I did call the Institute and after a round of voice mails left a detailed message about how the instructor insisted on thinning my heavy hair and proceeded to do so even after I had explained that my curly hair did not respond well to such treatment and that I left the Institute with a lopsided haircut. I never received any kind of follow up. response.
I had an absolutely wonderful experience yesterday and will definitely be back! After struggling to find a salon with convenient hours, affordable cost and positive experience, I am most certainly pleased with Douglas J Aveda Institute. I had a hair cut appointment with Bianca N - she was amazing. She herself had great hair, which is something I immediately look for when going into a new salon. Bianca took the appropriate time to look at my hair, understand how I style and what learn what my hair goals are. She then consulted with a instructor and made a plan. The shampoo was great and when back in the chair she assessed my hair again. Bianca took the time to cut my hair, ensuring it was even and had no holes. She then did a great blow out and yet again called the instructor over to check. I was confident in her skills from the beginning of the appointment but was so surprised that she thanked me for coming in because she hadnt had a lot of experience with a cut like mine. She explained to me the product she was using (without forcing a sale) and I do intend to buy next time I am in the salon. Thank you to Bianca for providing such a wonderful experience, I already made another appointment.
Emily gave a great simple haircut. I have very curly hair and went in and asked for a trim. I think the students do a great job with this. Emily did a great job diffusing my hair and making my curls look good. However, I am always really confused at the end when the teacher comes over the check the students work and the teacher combs out my curls which messes up the students very nice work. This has happened multiple times. I dont get this - especially for curly hair. Me personally, I dont like my curls to be combed out and frizzed after such diligent work.
Sarah did amazing!! Awesome with color and knows her products and is assertive about consultation this is a great quality keep it up!! Her Instructor ---I am not sure of her name I think It begins with P was outstanding super instructive and helped guide the process start to finish-- and quickest super responsive to questions and detail to the proper mix or blend for color--I love it super blonde and not everyone gets it--and she made sure everything is done right the thoroughness is super appreciated!! It takes time to process and nice that they will allow the right amount of time sometimes they want to rush and without checking and that was avoided this time I just want to let you know because you want to feel great when you leave--that you got your color and cut on point--even recommended a hair cut even though I didnt think I could have time to schedule. Great Experience!! Heart Heart!!
I got a haircut with Brittney G and it was great! I have very long hair and just needed a simple cut, but she checked in with me throughout the appointment to make sure it looked okay. The shampoo and products were also great, so it was a great deal. Thank you Brittney!
My girlfriend got her haircut from Catherine, and Catherine inexplicably cut it unevenly from start to finish, behaving unprofessionally and combatively the entire time. When she called to try and fix the issue, the receptionist was minimally polite and generally unaccommodating - my girlfriend went to a professional to fix it because she didnt want to wait a week for an open spot that fit around her schedule. Maybe customer service means something different over there. I was just an observer to this and felt compelled enough to write a review. I understand the Aveda Institute business model, and the risks of a student haircut, and I wasnt impressed - the overall experience was below any reasonable standard at any level. I hope the Aveda instructors take more pride in their teaching going forward, and I hope Catherine studies much harder before she goes out into the world and ruins other peoples hair too.
I absolutely love the facials at this Aveda school! They use all Aveda products and the students are very professional. The price is unbeatable.I had a facial today with Maya (Jonelle) Smith and she was absolutely fantastic! She is very personable, confident in her abilities, great explanation of products she was using, and my skin looks and feels fantastic after the service.
I have been going here for a couple of years and have always had a great experience. I just had my hair done today and again, everyone was kind, professional, and attentive. The supervisors are always there helping and the woman who did my cut and color did a fantastic job. She checked in with me to make sure it was what I wanted each step of the way. Highly recommended!
I love the concept of this salon/active learning institute, & have been an Aveda product consumer for about 35yrs. When my student stylist Jillian G. first sat me down to talk vision & strategy, I initially stumped her when I said that she was the artist & I trusted her suggestions. I explained that when I was younger, I would tear out pictures in magazines, or refer to famous people in requesting certain haircuts. They were always impossible to achieve because of my hair texture, wave, thickness, etc. I eventually decided to not continue wasting time like that & instead ask the professional, whom I consider an artist, what they think some striking ideas are. Once Jillian grew confident that I really was almost exclusively interested in what she could suggest after I gave her 2 parameters: length threshold & part placement, she seemed really excited to be given creative freedom & have some fun! After some contemplation, she described a longer bob that was shorter & layered in back, & angled down to the front in a sort of wedge shape. I was fully on board. Jillian was passionate, motivated, precise. She was only finished when everything was just so, & it was phenomenal! It was truly a work of art & I love it. Even her instructor was impressed with the quality & aesthetic of the cut & style. I hope future clients in school & beyond allow Jillian G. to show off her brilliance & skill. Many thanks to Douglas J!
I had the most wonderful experience at Douglas J Aveda Institute. Kimberly McConnell is an excellent esthetician. Her techniques are highly skilled and on par with an experienced professional. She was thoughtful in her questions about my skin concerns and used that information to select the ideal products and techniques for my facial. She made sure my comfort and safety were top priority. My skin emerged refreshed, smooth, and healthy. I am excited for my return visit!
I had a fantastic experience at this salon! They treated me very well and communicated to me exactly what they were putting in my hair as well as how it would help specifically for my hair type. My student was Genesis and she did an amazing job! She offered suggestions for how to get the look I wanted and she was super friendly. I will definitely be coming back!
I had Deja do partial highlights. I should get a picture of what I wanted and was very clear that I wanted the hair around my face highlighted as well. I said I did not want it too blonde. Well after putting in the foils, she disappeared for 40 minutes and never checked on me once. When she took the foils out it was waaay too blonde. And the the highlight didn’t even start down at my scalp. I was so upset. Then they had to use toner which helped but then changed me for it to fix their own mistake. I would recommended this staylist at all but the teacher was helpful in fixing things.
I had two great experiences at Aveda Institute. My first appointment was a color consult and a haircut. While there was a little bit of shuffling around to accommodate student breaks, I felt heard and comfortable during with both students and their educators. Jessica G did a wonderful job on my haircut and was a joy to talk with! A week later I returned for a full head color with Nicole who mixed up a beautiful red and did a great, quick job. Each appointment took about two hours, which is expected while working with students, but the prices are great and the friendly atmosphere makes it feel like time passed quickly. I would definitely return.
I had such a great experience here! The staff was very friendly and efficient right off the bat. My esthetician Jennifer was AMAZING. She was so warm and welcoming and really made my experience the best it could be. She took time to make sure she understood my concerns and wants for my skin. I could tell she was very passionate and did a great job. My skin feels so refreshed and hydrated! And to top it off, Jennifer was the sweetest and so friendly! I highly recommend!
Vanessa gave me a haircut and did such a great job! She made me feel comfortable, made sure she understood exactly what I wanted, communicated clearly exactly how my hair would turn out, and explained her whole process to me. She worked quickly and did a great job of explaining the products to me as well. My hair looks great and Ill definitely come back again!
I had such a super experience here. I had a facial from Anna E. She has a calm presence and made it a genuinely relaxing time. She was informative and communicative. This was my first facial and I’m tickled to know about these services now - my skin is still glowing! I also had a blowout and style from Jazmine M. It was so fun and Jazmine M. is kind and enthusiastic. I mean, this place is just so great. What a lucky community we are!
Highly recommend -- I received a 90 min. facial from Justine L., and it was amazing! It started with a skin consultation where Justine listened to my concerns and then consulted with her instructor on the best products to use for me. The facial included cleaning, toning, 2 masks, eye treatment and foot/hand/shoulder massage. Justine was very professional, articulate and friendly. Will definitely be returning!
I havent always had the best experience. Some students are better than others and service isnt consistent. However, my last visit was the best Aveda Institute experience Ive ever had and quite possibly one of the best haircuts Ive ever had in my life. Priscilla was my stylist and she was awesome. She listened to exactly what I wanted and cut my hair like a seasoned pro even though she still had a few months left until she graduated. She also gave one of the best scalp massages complete with the scented oil treatment which several students skipped over the last few times I got my hair cut. I love my haircut and would definitely follow Priscilla wherever she goes after graduating from Aveda!
I had a 90 minute stress relief treatment with Anna Escobar. It was amazing from start to finish. She was very friendly and asked great questions regarding my skin. She thoroughly explained everything that she was using and made me feel very comfortable. I felt so relaxed afterwards. I just went today and already booked my second appointment. I am very pleased with my experience and service. The front desk staff were also very friendly and helpful.
I’ve received two facials from Tatiana and she was excellent. She made my experience comfortable and relaxing. Reason I’m giving 3 stars is because of the front desk customer service. They’re not welcoming and not the friendliest. It’s happened on both occasions so I’m assuming this is how they run things up front, disappointing but the service makes up for it. They could at least smile, that’s a good start.
I had a wonderful experience with Catherine Vincent who did my roots to my hair where the gray once was. She did a wonderful job and the products she put in hair smoothed the texture of my hair! Great!I really loved Rachel Vincent she gave a facial to me that included the most luxurious experience the feet pampered and my hands pampered and the best part was a facial with the most amazing moisture masque and steam to help purify the skin. Still soft I love the extractions on the skin as well.Yes I loved the relaxing facial Pang was very sweet and good and she has a wonderful technique and great personality and I really loved the facial with MJ it was very relaxing and I got several compliments on my skin and she has a great touch like very professional And I felt medical but I extremely liked both. Thank youRecently went to go to Aveda after Covid and I was happy to have Tobin who did a glaze on hair and she was nice and really enhances my hair color
I highly recommend Gabriela U.! She was very friendly and listened to what I was wanting as a haircut style. She made me feel comfortable and did a fabulous job on my hair. I absolutely love my new cut! I even got compliments from the harshest critics at home lol! My new go-to place for hair. Thanks so much for such a wonderful experience!!
I absolutely love coming here. They have taken COVID precautions and this was the first place I felt comfortable going to when they reopened. They are temperature checking at check in and have two salons on two levels opened with everything fully masked, distanced + sanitized regularly.I can only speak for the haircuts as I get a trim every 6 weeks or so and they always do a great job with layers and adding just enough product. The instructors are super kind and helpful to their students and you can tell the students enjoy learning. You truly cannot beat it for a $16 haircut, style + blowdry in Chicago.
What a sensory feast for a fraction of the price!!! I had a 90 mins facial with Sophia E and I had a haircut and blow dry with Amanda K both amazing ladies. Both ladies were professional and listened well to what I wanted. Go book with them and you’ll understand what I’m raving about! I highly recommend this place.
I went in for a single process all over color with Jaz and it turned out great! I have never been to a teaching school for my color before so I was a tiny bit nervous, but I wasnt getting it bleached or a drastic cut so I figured it would be fine. The instructor came over to consult with us on the color and gave her direction on how much to use which made me feel a lot more comfortable. Jazmine was professional, talked me through everything she was doing and I love how my color turned out! I would definitely go see her again. Highly recommend!
I had an appointment with one stylist that was unable to come in and they quickly found me a new hairstylist to dye my hair. Chloe did a great job and was extremely kind. She helped me find the shade that I wanted and answered any questions I had. My only complaint is that I wasnt allowed to tip her.
I had a hair cut appointment with Vanessa. She asked me what I was in for and I explained I want 2 inches cut, add layers and thin my hair out. After brushing my hair back she asked and suggested I cut 3 inches which I was fine because my ends were pretty damaged. She suggested having all the ends at the same length or else my hair would become more U shaped. My hair is thick, slightly wavy and frizzy/some tangles. I’m also relieved that the instructor suggested small cuts instead of pulling through with the thinning shears! One thing I would say is my scalp is a little sensitive right now and brushing hair in sections starting at the ends really helps the sensitivity. Vanessa was very patient and communicative. The result was shiny, even cut with majority of weight reduced!
I love this salon! I’ve always received a 5 star treatment! Victoria M cut my hair this time and it was great! She paid special attention to detail to make sure that my hair blended well. I walked in with a choppy haircut, and she fixed it right up! I’m very happy with the result! Thanks, Victoria!!
I got a Stress Relieving Treatment done by Kendall Smith last week and it was the best treatment I have ever received. Kendall created an environment for me that was super relaxing and nurturing. You can tell that she takes great pride in her work and she wants her guests to feel as if their stress is actually being released. You can tell with her massage pressure and movements, she knows what she is doing and which areas of the body she is targeting. She took her time and completed the full service with perfection. She is going to be a great esthetician! I will be definitely following her to her next placement of employment! 😊Also, front desk staff was lovely as always and they adhered to COVID guidelines appropriately which made me feel safe and welcomed at the school. 😊
Marianna was an absolute pleasure to meet! I loved spending the afternoon with her! She clearly did everything her instructor told her to do with excellence, so kudos to Marianna! However, my hair is very tight, well textured curls, so this method of foiling in straight lines 1. doesnt highlight my curls and texture; if anything it hides it and 2. the color looks like the instructor told her to use dye instead of bleach. I look like an orange Zebra. There is no hairdresser Ive ever met who understands to never touch well textured curls while theyre drying - or really at all, so of course they did and I walked away looking like a fuzz ball. I think Aveda would be well-served to either turn down people with hair like mine or learn how to treat and style it. I again, want to give major compliments and Kudos to Marianna though!
I had a standard haircut appointment and had a great experience. The appointment started 10 minutes late, which I was slightly annoyed with at first. It turns out a previous appointment ran long, and staff was very apologetic about it.I had Aleah as my stylist and she was wonderful. She started out with a scalp massage, which I was not expecting. It was amazing! She was very informative about what she was doing throughout and did a great job with my hair. I would absolutely recommend her!
I received a facial from Paula Coppola and she was absolutely amazing!! I felt so comfortable with her and loved that she got to know me and my skin care routine before beginning my treatment. She was very knowledgeable on the products and knew the perfect products for my skin. My face was so dewy and glowing after the fact and did not break out at all afterwards, which it has tended to do in the bast. Would absolutely recommend her and cannot wait to go back to Paula for another treatment!!!
I had Alexis Vega do a cut and all-over color on me. She was very professional, friendly, and listened to what I wanted. She helped me choose the best color and cut based on my skintone and my daily hair routine. My hair turned out beautiful- I am in love!!! I would definitely recommend Alexis and the Douglas J Aveda Institute.
TL;DR:Incorrect scheduling.Lying to customers.Unprofessional customer service.Lack of accountability for stylists.I booked an appointment more than a week in advance for a haircut. In other states Ive lived, I loved getting my hair cut by students and they love cutting my hair. When I booked, there were probably 20 time slots available. I picked one right after work. About an hour later, I got a text message, which was surprising to me because I selected that I only wanted email updates, saying my booking was cancelled and I had to pick a whole different day. (Side note: I never got an email update.) I called immediately and asked why it was cancelled and why they couldnt just get another stylist, because I selected any stylist as this would be my first time. They just said the stylist wasnt available, and all the other time slots got booked. I laughed and said thats impossible, there were 20 time slots available and its only been an hour and its a week in advance. They said we get booked up pretty quickly, as if they were some premium salon, and I said, so quick that 20 time slots fill up in less than an hour for something more than a week away? He just kind of mumbled. I suspected they just didnt have their schedule correct but they refused to admit that and just said the stylist wasnt available. I grew frustrated at their unprofessionalism and lack of accommodation, or really any acknowledgement to their mistake. The only time slots available for that day were for in the morning when I would be at work, so they had completely deleted any afternoon or evening availability. I asked for the stylists name because if I rebooked, I wanted to make sure not to get that same stylist because she clearly just cancelled because she didnt want to work on a Friday night. I said I wanted to rebook with a different stylist but wanted to make sure I didnt get the same stylist, and they straight up hung up on me.Mind you, I was professional and polite this whole time. Im going to be looking for another beauty salon to get my haircuts from, unless this place decides to make amends for their unprofessionalism and acknowledge their mistakes. Which I would love to do.
I had my color retouched and toner done yesterday by Brittany C. She was not only professional but friendly. She listened to what I wanted and worked with me to achieve the look I wanted. I’ve gone to Brittany now three times and would recommend her to anyone. It’s a pleasure getting my hair done there and a great value.
Had a consultation with Tori a few weeks ago for hair coloring and she showed me pictures, suggested some things and then finally yesterday she did a balayage and toned my hair. She is great! Love my hair! Anna was the instructor and she was so supportive and happy to be there (you can tell she loves what she does and that translates to the quality of customer service and work). I’ve been here before and will continue to come
I went here for the first time today and it was great!! My haircut was with Cat (Caitlyn) and it was just a simple cut but she did an amazing job and I love it so much! She did an awesome job and I’ve gotten my haircut at a lot of different salons but this cut is the best I’ve ever had!! She cut a good chunk off and it’s shorter than I normally wear it but I love it so much and the way she styled it was so pretty and I love it! Also the prices are super affordable, I highly recommend!!
This was my first experience with the Douglas J Aveda Institute and I couldnt be happier! Samantha Reed did an excellent job cutting my hair! She was kind, knowledgable, and a great listener. I was so impressed with my haircut that Ill be back next time for a cut and color. Thanks so much, Samantha!
I had such a great experience at this salon last week with Sophia. Ive been into the salon a few times and am usually pretty happy with the result, but this time I felt like I was with a real professional. I came in for a highlight retouch and she did beautiful work. She took the time to listen to what I wanted and had amazing technique. Im so happy with the results and will definitely book with her for my next visit.
I have been here twice before! The first time was last May, and I had such a wonderful experience. The woman cutting my hair educated me about my hair type and recommended products of all kinds (not just Aveda) that would help moisturize my hair. She was going to graduate soon. I loved my haircut. 5 stars!!!I last went yesterday for a haircut, and I will say that I was nervous from the moment the woman shook my hand, but didnt look me in the eye. She seemed a little nervous, which made me nervous. She never told me her name, and spoke very quietly. I do what I usually do at a haircut, showing pictures and explaining what I want (a couple inches off, layers, and face frames). When she was cutting my hair, she would sometimes show me the hair in between her fingers and say So, like, is this good? Or... and I dont know how to cut hair or deal with hair so I wasnt really sure what to say. I was scared to talk to her when she was cutting my hair because she seemed so timid and I didnt want her to get distracted. She told me she burned someone with her hair dryer the other day while blow drying my hair (made me nervous). And she commented on how she couldnt get my hair in front to be even (made me nervous). Also, I had been in the chair for over an hour for literally a trim. She asked if my face frames were good, and I said Honestly, whatever you think would look good with the length of my hair and she replied, I just dont want to mess you up. When she was finished, I took a look at the layers in my hair in the back, and its like she barely cut my hair at all. I told her that I would like the layers more obvious, but my parking meter was about to run out (I didnt think Id need an hour and a half for a hair trim). She went to get her educator, who actually put layers in my hair. I dont think she cut my hair enough, and while I was in the chair I was already thinking about where and when I could actually get my haircut again.Overall, I would consider going back since I had such a great experience the first time. And all the hairstylists around me the second time seemed quite confident. I think it would be beneficial to talk to the student about instilling confidence in your clients so that they feel comfortable sitting in your chair.
I really enjoyed my experience at the Douglas J Aveda institute on Clark street. My stylist, Sana, was very personable and gave me a nice shampoo, haircut, and product recommendations. One of the Educators stepped in to help with the face framing layers...and I just dont like how they turned out. They arent face framing at all, theyre just short pieces of hair in the front that hang there which is why I removed one star. The haircut overall is really nice and Ill be back to see Sana.
I was in desperate need of a haircut and Madyson (Maddy) was phenomenal. I went in and said I needed a trim. I have curly hair so it’s hard to get a good cut that dries well straight or curly. I told maddy that I wanted long layers. She explained that with my fine, curly hair long layers may get the the exact look that I want to avoid. She suggested face framing and a different style of layering AND I AM SO GLAD SHE DID!! My hair feels 100x better than it did when I walked in. Having someone with curly hair / someone who understands curly hair do your cut is a game changer. I appreciate Madyson’s professional guidance that she gave me, I am so happy she said what she did! A++
I had the pleasure to have Haley Satoski do my 90 minute facial. She was amazing! She was great about asking questions to make sure that I was having the experience I wanted and checked in frequently. She also made recommendations for my skincare regime. I left feeling relaxed and my skin felt softer and looked wonderful. Looking forward to my next appointment with her
Horrible, horrible, horrible!!!I have very curly hair. Went for a root touch up ANd a balayage. I came out with my hair fried, lost 90% curl pattern , absolutely no balayage but a bad burnt orange color. When I asked for them to diffuse my hair dry, they had no clue how to dry not create a curl pattern. My hair is no where near a balayage. I hate it!And will have to cut my hair because of all of the damage. I trusted aces to give me a healthier, eco conscious artist hair change , instead I got garbage!!!I want my $100 back!!!!
Absolutely love this place! I am a Chicago native now living in Los Angeles. I literally wait all year long to have anything done to my hair till I can return home to Chicago and Douglas J Aveda Institute during the holiday. They have been doing my hair for about 10 years now. Why? Cost and quality of their work! I have never been dissatisfied with them ever. I have extremely long, very thick hair. My head-full-hair is not an easy cut. It takes some time and it has to be done while I stand. Plus, the best look for my do is round layers, taking up even more time. Even with all that, I still love what they do and the products they use to do it with. So worth the year long wait to avoid having a trim at the Aveda School in West Los Angeles. One very happy hair customer of Douglas J!
I tried the salon for the first time about a week ago and am so glad I did! I saw Bennett K - he was professional, kind, funny and a pleasure to work with. I have very long, straight hair that was overdue for a cut and shaping. We discussed what I wanted (decent trim and layers) he made some suggestions on how much length to cut, layering and adding some face framing layers. His instructor approved his plan and checked his work after. I was very happy with my hair and overall experience and will be back for other services.
Grant S. gave me one of the most stylish and flattering cuts Ive had! I told him about my concerns for my hair texture and the overall look I wanted, and he really elevated my vision. He was also so relaxed and easy to chat with. I cant wait to work with him again in a few months when I need a trim.
I had a wonderful experience at the Aveda Institute. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating, and went out of their way to help me get the services I needed. The student who did my eyebrow wax was professional, comfortable, and did a great job! The aesthetician student and instructor were both so sweet and walked me upstairs to make sure I was able to get a hair trim. Dallas worked me into her schedule and did a WONDERFUL job; she was very friendly, detail oriented, and had great recommendations and ideas for my long, damaged hair. Thank you to everyone who got me all set for my trip to Italy!
Students need to learn how to use clippers, they went in at an angle that cut skin. Never had a continuously painful haircut before. The teacher did not instruct proper technique and did not care enough about the end result when reviewing as there were differing lengths of hair left.
All five of these stars are specifically for Emily Wynne. Emily has been doing my hair since she became a student at Aveda-- she is hands down the best one there- sorry everyone! She does my cuts and color exactly like I ask each time but somehow better???? She switched me to their product line so now my hair is soft and smooth and smells good too. Weve been through long hair, short hair, balayage, full heads of color, and yes.......even BANGS. She is sweet to talk too, good at shampooing, and isnt awkward AF (we have all been there). Seriously cannot recommend her enough- definitely request her if you make an appointment.
Ive been here twice and have been pleased both times, but this last time (late Nov.) I had an awesome stylist in Dionne S. She listened carefully, gave good advice, and did a great job on my color and cut. And she was a charming conversationalist. Note that the Institute is not the place to go for a quick cut (I was there for 3 hours and even my basic cut earlier in the Fall took 1.5 hours), but its a great place to go if youre a bit laid back about your hair, like experimenting, or just like a great deal.
I have never been happier with my hair!!! My stylist was amazing! I will follow her anywhere! The instructor was there every step of the way, encouraging her, and guiding her. She also included me in the conversation! Can’t say enough about my experience! Hard for me to mention my stylist, for fear of never getting another appointment! Her name starts with C!
I LOVE my haircut from here! Shelbi F, my stylist, did such a wonderful job - she was super attentive listening to what I wanted, and Im so so happy with the end result. My hair feels so much healthier, and she gave me legit the best blowout Ive ever gotten. My hair is somewhat thin and can get pretty dry, so most blowouts Ive gotten before end up looking flat and frizzy, but Shelbi made my hair look so shiny and full of volume. Thank you Shelbi!!
I had the pleasure of getting my hair done by Bianca Navarro and she did a fantastic job! From the moment I walked in, to the conclusion of my service, I felt very well taken care of. Everyone was extremely thorough and professional. Bianca did an amazing job asking questions about what I wanted & explaining the process and I couldnt be happier with the turnout!
This is a late post. I would like to commend GIA for being a wonderful student. She did a very remarkable job with me. She colored and cut my hair last month and it was truly an amazing experience. I love love love love my my new color and look. She has the most gentle hands, washing my hair was very relaxing and therapeutic. I enjoyed my experience with her that I made another appointment with here this week. GIA is very respectful, soft spoken and very concern with the customer. I am very glad she was the one who did my hair. I am pretty sure she will be very successful once she graduates.
Literally the best haircut I have ever had. I dont like having my haircut normally, and most salons blow it out and put a ton of product in it. The woman who cut my hair listened to exactly what I wanted, and did an amazing job. I asked her if it was possible to leave my hair damp instead of blowing it out, she said of course, and even braided it for me at the end so I would have nice beach waves the next day. This was 10x better than any other haircut I have ever had.
I had an appointment with Daniele yesterday at noon for a color redo & cut. She is incredible! Very knowledgeable and friendly. My color is great & she encouraged me to rethink my haircut idea based on my hair type. I love it. I’ve seen her before and was equally pleased. I booked my next two appointments with her before she graduates. Instructors are great also. Super happy with Aveda Institute.
Lovely stylists who consistently bring the luster and color back to my hair. The front desk staff welcome you with class and friendliness and make the check in process effortless. The stylists are bright, dedicated, and skilled. I have always left Aveda happy. The instructors care about the stylists and genuinely help them. The instructors also ensure a 5 star experience every time.
Nicole E. Cut my hair today and provided a great experience! Her professionalism and insight was very helpful and needed. With my hair growing back after treatments I hated all the random lengths that made me feel like I was rocking the mullet. Nicole helped me with deciding the perfect length for a bob to make me smile again. Plus my husband loves it!
I had a really great experience! I had a 60-minute facial with Monica and she did a wonderful job. She was gentle, responsive, knowledgeable, and attentive. I felt so relaxed and comfortable and my breakouts are less red and sensitive the next day. She also did a great job on my brow waxing. Ill definitely be going back!
My stylist was Brittany and I was very happy with the haircut she gave me. I especially love how she took into consideration my hair type and then cut/styled my hair according to how I typically wear it! She even gave me tips for my wavy/curlyish hair. Highly recommend Brittany! Thank you!!
I was hesitant to visit because I’ve had bad experiences with other school, but this experience totally changed my mind. Genisis G was my stylist and she was great. She mentioned the upkeep necessary for the cut I had mentioned, so we ended up doing something different, and it was a much better decision. That showed she was knowledgeable and thoughtful. Definitely will be back.
Jenna as the best!!! She listened to what I wanted and I got exactly what I asked for: layered bob with bangs from a lob with no bangs. My hair was damaged from home coloring and the botanical always does wonders as well! Ive had wonderful experiences here always and at a bargain price but Jenna takes the cake!!! Will def go back to see her soon!!
Pretty sure I explained what it was I was looking for, regarding color, to the student as well as the instructor. Sadly they chose a completely different direction for me. Nothing towards what I was looking for, helmet head, just in time for Halloween.Left feeling super unhappy, after a couple hours of pity faces from friends and colleagues felt even more unhappy. No recourse, just lesson learned. Instructor was clearly uninterested in my thoughts. Wont be returning to Douglas J Aveda establishments.

2022-04-14Great experience here! Came in for a perm and thank god they talked me out of it. They saw my natural curls and advised a much better haircut and the results turned out fabulous. Pearla, instructed by Russel, did an amazing job with my hair!

2021-12-03Truly the worst thing to ever happen to my hair!! I was very clear that I wanted an all over golden blonde and showed several pictures, then I was suggested highlights. I was skeptical but trusted them. Its not at all what I wanted, even the color itself, and it was HORRIBLY done. I could have done better myself with a box dye. I am so so so upset and frustrated and just sad. I went back in to request to have it redone, but they would only offer to fix the roots. I would have to pay to get what I actually wanted. And I was also charged an extra $20 for a toner without being told there would be an extra charge. I feel horrible because the staff was very friendly, but I am beyond words upset. Can I PLEASE get a refund?

2022-01-19I came in and saw Leah M for a highlight and cut after seeing that she was recommended by others in the community in a lakeview Facebook group I’m in. She did not disappoint! the color was perfect & I am so happy with the results! She was patient & thorough and It felt like the same quality I get visiting my usual master stylist at the aveda salon I go to back home! She had a few other students helping with some color as well and they were all great! I wish we were able to tip! 😊

2022-01-28I went to Douglas J Aveda for my first time earlier this week and I have to say, I am so impressed!!! I was nervous at first with it being a institute but I was paired with Angelica and she was AMAZING and made immediately made my nervousness dissipate. She was so professional and really took her time to know exactly what I wanted to be done to with my haircut. She constantly considered how curly my hair is and how that will effect my cut which I have found to be hard to come by from stylists. Angelica is so personable and pays attention to detail and in turn, produces great results! I cannot recommend her enough, I will be back! You also cannot beat the price! I wish I could tip her. Amazing!!

2022-01-12I am an alumni here at Douglas J and came back recently to get a haircut from Jasmin m. This is my second haircut from her and she is extremely personable and cut my hair exactly how I wanted! The day after my haircut I also came back to see Victoria R for a stress relieving treatment and she did great! The perfect amount of pressure and I feel so relaxed.Highly recommend a service from these two while they’re still here! ❤️

2022-04-12Jeeze Louise, Third Edit!…My third and unfortunately last visit ever to this establishment. After many successful visits, I decided to get my balayage touched up by one of the colorist students. I had a consult done a few weeks beforehand and was told that the process would be simple and straightforward. The student, who will not be named due to their privacy, seemed confident in her ability and I thought we were on the same page. After 30 minutes into her doing my hair she called over another student to help her. Apparently the receptionist under booked my time and she needed an aid (okay). The finished result was choppy, warm toned, and a cheap job. The student was obviously upset I didn’t like her work, despite it not being what I wanted. A teacher was called over, obviously upset as well. She played with my hair a little before calling over yet another teacher. In no way was I apologized to by the teacher, student, or receptionist for this issue. In fact, everyone’s tone with my changed once I didn’t like my new hair color. First and foremost, this is a SCHOOL. Somewhere to LEARN and better themselves. What a shame that these students and teachers refuse to take constructive criticism. Y’all can have my $70 and forget the free fix. I’ll take my business (facials, haircuts, color, and eyebrow treatments) elsewhere. My first visit to the Aveda Institute was absolutely terrific! Pamela did a BOMB haircut for me. Dead-ends, begone! She hit the nail on the head with communication and professionalism. The teachers certainly know their stuff too. After a 10 minute color consultation, I knew this would be my new salon. Thanks Pamela and staff!New Edit: My second visit to this salon was equally awesome! I came back within the month for another service, a facial. Gabriella was knowledgeable, communicated throughout the service, and gave me great recommendations on products that would help my skin. Thanks Gabi and staff, Ill surely be back soon!

2022-02-12Got the Stress Relieving Treatment and Jess did an outstanding job! She had a calm voice, explained everything she was doing and made me feel at ease. I could feel the stress melting away, highly highly recommend this treatment as it s a little bit of everything and the price is unbeatable! Me and my sister also get our haircuts here regularly and have had nothing but great experiences, I refuse to go anywhere else for my salon need

2022-04-17I have gone to Douglas J many times over the years for various services. Generally I’m happy with everything. However, today was completely different. My highlights got very messed up to the point that I can’t wear my hair down. It was acknowledged that it looked bad and was asked to book a follow up appointment to correct it. But the closest appointment they could book me for was 4 weeks out (and this is *any* available appointment not just for a specific day or time). So I asked what they suggested and was given the option to 1)take the appointment 4 weeks out and deal with how messed up my color was for a month or 2)chose to not pay for the service, get my correction elsewhere, and not be allowed to book with them again. This is absolutely terrible customer service so went with option 2. The salon acknowledged how messed up my color was but refused to properly accommodate. You just lost a customer and someone who will no longer be recommending Douglas J.Note: The students are always great and I acknowledge they are learning and mistakes happen. This review reflects my experience with teaching staff and the front desk and their inability to provide reasonable adjustments for their mistake. The front desk was incredibly rude to me during this entire process which confirmed my decision to never return and never recommend them again.

2022-05-13I’ve been going to the Aveda Institute for over 15 years. I started when I needed to blend out the gray hair coming in. They’ve done a great job with a “color retouch” every month since then. After a few years I noticed how good my hair looked, and felt, after my color treatments. This was before just getting a blowout was popular. Turned out Aveda offered them, so I’ve been getting a weekly blowout finish, between my montthly color treatments, ever since. My hair always looks lovely, and I often get compliments. I also use the spa treatments, including facials, which have been very helpful as my skin changes, The students have been excellent; I’ve enjoyed getting to know many of them, and kept in touch with a few.The regular services at the Aveda Institute are a key part of my self-care routine. It’s hard to imagine living in a city without an AI. My highest recommendation - give them a try!

2022-01-20I was so impressed with the Institute and my stylist Amber. The Institute was very friendly and clean. Amber was great! I got the cut/style I told her I wanted. The surprising part was it was only $16 and they cant accept tips. My tip would be to try them out. Ive paid well over $50 for cuts I wasnt crazy about so after 2 days I still love my cut. Thanks Amber, you were a pleasure!
