Had a good experience overall. They are strict, especially about phone use (no pictures, no calls, no sound) but they are not rude or anything. There is a lot of standing in lines but when you get to the check-in window the employees are very helpful and nice. Its important that youll have an appointment when you come - there is no walk-ins. An appointment can be made online or if urgent travel or life and death reasons should be made through the phone (note that you need proof for those reasons). For more information you can check travel.state.gov.Got to the building and waited in (left) line for the passport agency (I think the right line is for immigration). After showing the officer at the entrance your email you will be directed to the line for the security check, which will get you to the adjacent building (536 South Clark). From there youll take the elevator to the 9th floor and get in line to an officer standing next to the elevator. When youll show your email confirmation to the officer you will be directed to the left through a hallway to stand in line for standing in another line to check-in (yeah, lots of lines). At the check-in youll give all your documents and get a number, then wait in the sitting area for your number to be called. When your number is called youll go to the specific window and get all the information about your passport.I had to schedule an urgent passport appointment. Called and got an appointment for a few days later. My appointment was early in the morning and altogether it took about an hour (90% of it was standing in lines). My passport was ready the next day afternoon and I came back to pick it up.Paid extra $60 for expedited.Note that for regular appointments it will take more time both to scheduling an appointment and for receiving it.
Scheduled an appointment within 5 days of international travel per department policy in another state since there were not appointments available before travel in our state and the office is closed on the day of our appointment. We have been on the phone with the agency for 4 hours trying to get another appoint even if its in the state that we traveled from today and they are not will to help at all. We continue to get misinformation, given phone numbers to call the are only out going lines. I understand unforeseen things happen, but this is a last minute office and they are not providing any help to resolve their issue. Very disappointed, however not surprised at all.
Security is strict but very professional. The Passport Agents at the counter are very kind and a pleasure to work with. Make sure you have all your documents in hand! Had my appointment at 10am, got out at 10:30. Passport was ready by 2:30. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MASK OR YOU WILL NOT BE LET IN!
Great experience in a very stressful situation. Skip the costly agencies. Gather your paperwork and pic. I made my appt 10 days in advance. The earliest they could get me in was 3 days prior to travel. I went with all the paperwork then was given a receipt and asked to come back the following day at 2pm for pickup. Total time spent in the building was 25 mins max over 2 appts. Extremely friendly staff from security guards to employees in the actual passport office. Nice clean building / office.
The staff are not prepared to handle extenuating circumstances. I already applied for a passport that was being processed slowly so I asked to have it transferred to this agency. Before arrival, I confirmed that my materials would be present at the agency and I would not need to complete another application or take another picture. I confirmed this on the phone twice and with the initial person of contact at the agency. However, once getting my passport it was a different circumstance. I waited over an hour for a picture and asked to duplicate the forms that they had printed in front of them. This place was such a hassle.
If you’re going to change the policy for when people can make appointments for such an important service that is already incredibly snail paced, perhaps update your website to A) give a warning that the policy is changing and B) Give the correct timeframe for making an appointment as now anyone following your own stated and historically stated directions will find themselves without an appointment to be had for essentially an overpriced printing machine to “renew” passports that are taking 2+ months to receive the traditional way with good old USPS shipping. Only 26 agencies in this country and not all are even open, Join 2022 guys I can literally buy a car online and have it at my front door the next day but you cant even keep your website up to date to print at a snails pace.
Make sure you bring copies of all your documents. This place was pretty amazing. The security was kind and the workers on the ninth floor really want to help. There are reviews of this place complaining about their plight, but if you bring your filled out forms with the proper documentation, they will get you your passport. I’m so relieved and grateful for the folks at the Chicago Passport Agency.
My appointment was at 9am and I was told to come back between 2-4 pm so I arrived at two to get my passport, guess what? They messed up my passport and specifically my birthdate and I waited for 2 hours and still waiting and they have yet to give me an update. I paid for expedited service but they’re the ones that messed up my passport. I should get a refund for that! I am super upset, at least give me an update
Wonderful staff and efficient services. Just follow their directions and you will be fine. I had my interview around 9:00 AM with my family and we were out of the building in less than 1 hour after being told to pick up passport same day between 2-3 PM. The security guard in Lobby will verify your appointment against his records so make sure you have your appointment info printed. Another security guard on 9th floor will verify your appointment again before letting you in. Absolutely no walk-ins! Everyone had appointments. When I got there around 2:45 PM, the room was jam packed with probably 60-70+ people who were all there for passport. Their machine wasnt working properly which delayed everyone by 3-4 hours but it was something out of their control and still worth the wait. One key word. DOCUMENTS! I cannot stress that enough. Instead of thinking the staff will do the homework for you, have all you documents ready and anything extra you think you might need and youll be fine. It will be fast and efficient service as long as you have all documentation.
This agency is horrible. I called for my daughter’s passport and they gave me an appointment on the day I was flying. I called them 15 days early and said to gave me appointment early but they said this is the only spot they have for Chicago. I told them again and again that my flight is at 12:30. They gave me appointment at 8:00 o’clock. We reached there at 8 am. They didn’t gave my daughter’s passport till 11:15 am. I request them number of times. I missed my flight and my both kids were crying. Horrible experience.
I applied for new application for my son, they simply said not eligible for renewal and i know i checked the box that said Not issued a passport before, its been over 5 months, I didn’t get my supporting documents, I didn’t get any update, even the Passport status page showing not available after 5 months of saying Processing, i just dont get it! How can they do that? I cant reach anyone to talk to, i cant get a real person number, national information center is all talk number, no one actually there to listen to us!
Worst experience I’ve ever had. Paid almost $300 forced to wait up until one day before my international flight just to find out that they don’t know how to do their job.. and will not give me any information. Now my mother has Covid in another country and they will not give me my passport for no reason and no explanation. Worst situation. No contact phone number just took my money and said sorry🤷♂️ Worst process to go through.Cancel your flight because they don’t care
Hands down the most pleasant experience with a government agency!!! From security to the agents at the desk assisting, everyone was so NICE! I went in intimidated like when I go to the dmv 😂 but I can honestly say best experience under what I’d consider a very stressful situation. I called 2 weeks before my travel at exactly 8:00 and was on hold for 8min the only apt available was for Friday even tho I was originally scheduled to fly out Thursday. Thankfully I was in a position to book a new tix for Saturday for a friends wedding. Went in at 10:30 and by 2:45 with passport in hand! 😁
I wouldn’t listen to these negative reviews . They are getting mad at this location because it’s difficult to get appointments and the passport agency’s phone number is always busy. Let’s be very clear , it’s close to impossible to get an emergency appointment. I had to contact politicians office and bug them to help ( and they did). When I got to my appointment here it was amazing . the first two people that helped me were amazing and had great vibes. I had an issue with my passport that required a specialist because I had an application already in process . So they called in specialist named Portia to handle my case. At this point she was the 3 worker to help me so I was panicked. I was visibly crying and Portia made me feel at ease. I felt confident that she was going to get the job done. When I walked out of the office without my passport , to come back later I thought to myself Portia definitely is has my confidence. She was wonderful and had a really good vibe. Once you’re in the facility it’s a great office. The people are there to help you and they truly do help. Also, for an “ emergency appointment “ you literally need a very serious emergency. Like someone needs to have died or is about to die and they DO check.
It has been nightmare. I have waited 28 weeks since my application started processing for what was supposed to be a 10-12 week routine service. About a month after my application I received a letter requesting additional paper work. I send it back, and have been waiting since. I knew it would cause delays, but it has been 7 months. I have called countless times. They give no information. They can’t check and see why it’s taking so long, and there seems to be no clear set of answers. I tried to get an appointment at this agency, but none were available. I tried to expedite it, but even that application takes forever. It’s been a month. I have t even been charged. I’m at a loss of what to do at this point. I would give negative stars if I could. The only positive is that their phone wait times are back to normal instead of 2+ hours
PRO TIP: if you need an appointment for an emergency passport CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE’s OFFICE tell them the situation and they can help get you an appointment! (In my case I had to ask help from another office cause my representative office was a bit useless)THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO SECURE ONE!!But also have all your paperwork in order to first send to your representative. For me this included my passport application, proof of the emergency and proof of travel. The people in the office are so nice and helpful and you’re in and out within the hour! Once you have all your paperwork done and your application is accepted you’ll get your passport that same day. Hopefully this helps other people :)
I called 3 times, changed my travel date 3 times. But still couldn’t get the appointment. The only spot that was open was in Detroit😞😞😞😞I wish there’s better and faster ways to get the passport renewed 😔The ladies who answered my calls were very nice though😊 but still couldn’t get the appointment
This is one of the worst passport agencies I have ever interacted with. Everything is so wrong with them. They are so slow with passports which made me miss a trip out of the country. I spent hundreds of dollars just for them not to be on top of their game. They are so delayed even though things are slowly going back to normal. I would never trust your passport with these people ever in my life. In order to come in contact with their customer service is as hard as my chemistry final this past semester, and trust me it was hard. It was one of the worst experiences I had regarding passports. I paid expedited services which they said 4-6 weeks on their website, yet I haven’t received anything! It is so annoying. Never again. You can’t get a hold of them through phone at ALL. I don’t know why they have a phone number on their website if they never pick up the phone. Also, why don’t they open up more appointments? I get that it’s during Covid but there’s always a chance to open spots up. NEVER GO WITH THEM. They should be ashamed of themselves for having lazy and uncaring people in this building. Be better.
If there was 0 star, I wouldve gave that. Rescheduled my emergency appointments multiple times. I get here on time and they are telling me the appointment was canceled. Did not notify or anything. I live 2 hrs away from Chicago, came in horrible weather. Next time I know to choose the minnapleus passport agency even though I live 8 hours away. This passport agency is unreliable and should be dismantled or hire new employees. Weather isnt that bad for them to cancel the appointment. Im disappointed in this agency, will never in the future make an appointment here again. Atleast could have notified me. I strongly strongly recommend not coming here.
You cant enter the building without an appointment, you cant schedule an appointment because none are available. Youd figure they would have their act together during Covid after over a year. They dont. I found out my passport was expired two days before an international flight for my wifes Babymoon. They told me to call. I did. They told me to book an appointment online, I tried. I went to the building to try to plead my dilema, couldnt pass security without an appointment. I do not understand the purpose of having emergency services if you cannot utilize them when you actually have an emergency. I get that at the end of the day, it is my fault for not keeping up to date with my own passport.
I had the unfortunate luck of having a passport stolen two days before I had to obtain a foreign visa and had to hope that this agency could provide me a same-day one. I went in with the expectation that they’d tell me I was out of luck (especially since I did not have an appointment and was a walk-in on a day that they were fully booked for appointments) but to my shock I was out of the agency by nine o’clock with the promise that my passport would be ready for pickup by 3.Around 1pm they called me to tell me there was an issue with my application and photo and I needed to return to the agency. I had submitted the same photo I had used for the previous (very recent) passport that had been stolen, which was my own fault. I was directed to a very close-by CVS where I got my photo retaken and returned to the agency. Because it was my second passport reported missing/stolen in a short period of time, the man at the window told me that he could issue me only a limited visa valid for one year. I needed a passport valid for at least two years due to requirements of my study visa, and when I explained this to the officer helping me he was extraordinarily helpful and issued me a passport valid for two years after approval from his manager. He did not have to go above and beyond the expectations of his job to help me, but he did. Despite the issues with my application, which were largely my own fault and not at all the fault to the Passport Agency, I still got my passport that same day.In sum, this passport agency went above and beyond to ensure that I was not completely out of luck with obtaining the exact passport I needed at the exact moment I needed it. They were efficient, professional, friendly, and super fast. Yes, they expect you to be ready with the proper documentation ready to go, but they deal with easily over a hundred applicants a day, many of whom need passports immediately and many of whom (like me) have strange problems that aren’t routine and take time to solve. Be prepared and friendly and they’ll return the courtesy.
Had already mailed in old passport for renewal by mail about a week ago, however due to family emergency in India, needed an emergency passport for same day travel.Chicago center was great in expediting my process and looked for alternate ways to ensure I would get new passport despite another passport being processed in parallel.End to end from getting past entry security to getting passport in hand was about 3 hrs. 2 hrs from the time my application was accepted. Excellent service, very friendly and helpful staff.
Horrible!! I submitted all documents required and paid extra to get my passport within 4 to 6 weeks its been 8 weeks and my trip is scheduled for 6/19/21 but no passport so I cant leave for my trip. Absolutely no one was helpful in anyway what so ever. You charge me extra for a service and in the end I still have no passport and spent thousands on a trip am unable to attend because I have no passport. So upsetting
I caught such a Blessing! I didnt realize that my passport had expired and had an International flight to catch at 12pm the day after a holiday. I arrived at the office at 7:20 as a walk-in and was seen promptly at 8am By MELISSA G. who was Amazing! She was very courteous and professional and informed me that it would take a miracle to get processed with enough time to make the flight but low and behold I was able to obtain my Renewal in hand by 10am and make my flight. I couldnt say Thank You Enough To MELISSA G. she was such a Blessing! 🙏🏽
We had a great experience with a rush passport renewal today. My 9 year old daughter needed to travel to see her grandma who just had a stroke and is currently in critical condition. The people here really went out of their way to fit us in their schedule. Thank you Tracy and Eucinda for your kindness and getting my daughter to laugh/smile when dealing with the potential loss of her grandmother. Your service is very much appreciated. I cant thank you enough.
This place was AWESOME! The staff were wonderful pleasant and EFFICIENT!!! I needed a passport renewal in one day, and they DID IT... and with a SMILE! The security was even polite. The officers kept the order in the line without it feeling overcrowded. Despite the hundreds of people that it looked like were waiting, I was out of there in less than 20 minutes for my passport when I returned. GREAT AGENCY!
I had a flight at 4 PM on a Monday, and the Friday before I realized that my passport was expired... I showed up to this place at 7:50 AM on Monday ready for them to tell me that itll take a minimum of 24 hours for them to renew the passport, and left with a brand new passport in my hand at 10:40 AM, which left me plenty of time to make it to my flight that day. Amazing, professional, speedy service. While I dont recommend renewing your passport absolutely last minute like I did, if you do find yourself in such a conundrum, this is the place to go. Unless your flight leaves on the weekend, in which case not even this wonderful agency can help you. Life pro tip -- always check your passports expiration date in advance.
I wish every government agency was run like this one. The staff is friendly and helpful and their process is hyper efficient. I had to get a passport for same day travel on Black Friday. I showed up at 7:30 with my documents and no appointment. I was 3rd in line. They opened immediately at 8:00 am and processed my passport request in 15 minutes. I came back and picked up my passport 2 hours later and caught my afternoon flight. Can’t recommend them enough. Bring all your documents, especially photos, as they can’t do these on site. Show up early in the morning if you don’t have an appointment. You’ll have to go through security and the building is open before the office opens.
Unfortunately the agency let us down this time. My boyfriend has been planning to come with me on a trip to visit my 99yo grandmother. He started the process months ago and jumped through many hoops to renew his passport, but because of obstacles with payment and postal service delays, could no longer rely on mail to send the application and advised to make an appointment within the two week window. He was given an appointment time today on Christmas Eve. He called three times to confirm his appointment time because he knew it was strange that they would schedule him on a national holiday. He was reassured it was the right date. But of course the office is closed today. We live 3hr drive from Chicago, so he figured this out around 5am, halfway through his drive to the city (because he wanted to be there early). Moreover, his schedule confirmation number on the automated messaging system now mysteriously can’t be found. I mean. What on earth. I’m leaving out infuriating parts I don’t even know about because he’s been trying to keep me from worrying. Hopefully he can get a same day passport on Thursday but our flight is Saturday so... this is incredibly, incredibly stressful and such a disappointment.
I was flying to Mexico and waited until the last minute to apply for my first-time passport. I made an appointment for 8:30 AM, 3 days before my flight, arrived at 8:15 and was done applying by 8:35 AM. Everyone who spoke to me from the main entrance to the final step of processing was respectful, kind and patient. My passport was ready to be picked up at 3:00 PM that same day. Don’t bother with third party services if you can take the day off and hang around Chicago for a few hours. It also only cost $205 instead of the $500+ third party services would’ve charged.Best government agency experience EVER!!
This place is the most efficient government office I have ever visited. My son had his passport stolen and needed one in a day, it was Friday and his flight to Mexico was Monday at 6am. We gathered all the paperwork and headed 2 hours away to Chicago. There were no appointments available for the day but it was the only day we had so we just went there to take a chance. We were greeted by the MOST PROFESSIONAL, HELPFUL, COURTEOUS, people EVER! We had no expectations going it because it was just a chance and we were routed everywhere we needed to go, and helped in record time in my book. These wonderful people actually took an interest in HELPING. The minute all the paperwork was submitted I was expecting to wait and see if we got it knowing it was about to close in a couple hours. The woman looked as us and said oh yes, youll get your passport today, thats what we do I was so relieved I started to cry and my son was shaking. We waited a couple hours and got his passport, he said when they handed it to him he swears it was still warm. Someone stole his car and his passport but not his vacation. THANK YOU THANK YOU EVERYONE AT THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE CONSULAR AFFAIRS PASSPORT SERVICES IN CHICAGO ILLINOIS. YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY AND MY SONS HEART
We realized that we’d lost our passport the day of international travel and also needed to apply for a visa. The facility is clean and very efficiently organized. The staff was incredibly helpful and provided guidance on paperwork and requirements. We got in by 7:30 am and out by 10:30 am with a new passport. Of course - I wouldn’t recommend waiting until the last minute to check but in case of emergency- we could not have gotten a better service and kindness in this situation.
Most efficient government office Ive ever been to. I went in the morning and submitted my paperwork and was given a time to come back in the afternoon for pickup. There was an issue with my application and Renee called me and we were able to resolve it over the phone, she was absolutely lovely! The DSS officers were also very nice and helpful and their uniforms were immaculate. They do have some strict rules there but this is how they are able to make things so efficient and secure. Also, I was able to bring my luggage into the office when I came back to pick up my passport, which was good because I had a flight that evening. Speaking of which, the Blue Line station is right across the street so its easy to get to/from OHare Airport. So thankful that this place exists!
I submitted everything for my passport ONE year ago! I received a letter stating they needed more information and/or they would send back my paperwork in 90 days. I have not heard back since. They have my original birth certificate still and no matter how much I call or send letters, it has never been returned. Even if I was willing to re submit everything I cant because THEY have my birth certificate.
The service when applying for a passport, while slow, isn’t the worst. The staff overall are friendly enough. HOWEVER, the reason I’m giving it a 1-star review is because of their passport pickup system. Easily the worst system of all time. It doesn’t matter how early you show up or your place in line, they hand out passports in any random order so some people will wait 2 minutes and others will wait 2 hrs. Even worse than the DMV, which is saying something.
This place is amazing! I went in today at 730am without an appointment, I was out of there by 820am and was told I could pick up my passport today at 3pm. I was helped by Dolores, but everyone was friendly and helpful just like most of the reviews describe. Definitely schedule an appointment if you can, but if you dont have one, show up as early as possible. Also, be sure to complete proper forms, bring proof of travel and picture.
Passport Fees:This location according to the signage accepts: Credit Cards, checks, or money orders made payable to: U.S. Department of StateEase of Moving through line:Although there was a long line, they have a pretty good system in place to move applicants seamlessly through. Make sure you have all your paper works filled out and ID cards ready for verification. I noticed a lot of people lost their spot in line because their forms were not completely filled out. They had to complete it before they were allowed to move ahead in line to get their ticket number.I had no appointment. I walked in and had no trouble being attended to.Due to my personal travel situation, I was asked to pick up passport next day.
I needed a passport in 2 days and made an appointment and they got me right in and got me a passport that afternoon! The flow was super structured and organized. Made it easy to know what to do. Sharon and Tracey both helped me and were beyond nice! I figured the staff would be like airport staff who are annoyed and angry the whole time and these ladies really surprised me in a good way! So friendly and relatable and helpful! Really grateful for this place and its staff!
Cant make an appointment online nor over the phone. Have been calling daily & checking the site none stop & absolutely NOTHING! They spelled my daughter name wrong on her passport. They have given me the option to mail in her passport which could take forever. They are beyond PATHETIC!
I’ll NEVER recommend waiting until the night before your flight, but if you must this place is amazing. Everyone there works with you the make the process as easy and stress free as it can be. I cane in today for a first time passport for a 4am flight the following morning. Got in around 10am had to wait for about and hour or so and was approved by noon. Picking up my passport this afternoon at 3 and leaving for Mexico 9 hrs later. My best suggestion would be to get there early around 9 and TRIPLE check your documents (ds-11, photo ID, birth certificate, proof of travel, passport photo and payment) I forgot my photos on my dresser and they directed me to a place down the street that took. Can’t thank everyone there enough for being so helpful through this stressful process
Had same day passport renewed for my son. Its a lottery at best, one may well run into a crowded day when the office is busy, but even so, they were very courteous, professional and helpful people, improved a lot since five years ago when I last visited. Make an appointment beforehand, it shortens your wait in line time, and do your homework well, get all documents and copies ahead of time, its only sensible.
Extremely impressed with the service provided by all right from the security staff and the staff who services the customers, went there to renew my passport on an expedited service, the whole process took about 15 minutes!Every one was very courteous and showed that they are willing to help!Keep up the good work!
Did not realize that I needed my passport to be valid for 3 months after my travel dates for my European vacation. Dumb on my part, but thankfully the Chicago Passport Agency has a great and efficient system set up. I showed up without an appointment right when they opened, did my paperwork and was seen within an hour, and got the passport a few hours later! They saved my trip and did it very pleasantly - couldn’t be happier!
I almost went to SamedayPassports but after reading the reviews I decided to come to the Passport Agency. I’m glad I did. I realized night before my travel my passport will expire in 4 months and I may not be allowed to my destination. I went to Walgreens at 7am for a photo and was at the Agency by 7:20. I had my passport in hand by 10am. Fast, professional service and at a good price. Highly recommend it!!
My wife and I had to renew our passport yesterday in the Chicago office. I really hated having to pay the money and go through this process. Jasmine J in the Chicago Passport office made it the most enjoyable experience. She along with her staff really blessed us with her kindness , professionalism and great service.
This has been the most disappointing and frustrating process to get a passport . I could not call anyone to confirm information provided. But yet they were still sending me information request letters . Ive sent documents several times but still no passport or communication .
This place is phenomenal! Everyone was helpful and kind. I was so nervous and on edge because we found out 12 days before we were scheduled to leave for Cuba that our kids passport didnt have the required 6 month before expiration to travel (they expired in 5 months, egad). 12 days before scheduled travel, made the appointment online. The next available appt was 7 days later. 7 sleepless nights later got to the appointment with only a few days before departure. We took the kids out of school, traveled 3.5 hours and got a hotel the night before to be sure to get there 45 minutes before our 9 AM appointment. Good thing to get there early because the security line was slow. Once through security we were in and out in 20 minutes, total time for appointment and security was 45 minutes. WE CAME PREPARED! That made a huge difference because I didnt realize my DL expired so I had backup photo ID with me. Whew, disaster averted. We were able to go have Chi pizza and get Garretts popcorn while we waited for 3PM pickup time. The only reason they didnt get 5 stars was because the pickup process was excruciatingly slow. After a day of nerves, we got back by 2:20PM to quickly get through security, no line and immediately checked in. We waited 1 hour and 15 mins before our number was called(still not terrible for 1-day passport service). Once at the counter it was quick easy, and again very pleasant service. Overall wonderful experience and vacay was saved! Even with hotel and travel cost, was much cheaper than courier and we had passports in hand on the same day! Thanks Tiffany S and Marie J- you were excellent!
I NEVER write reviews, but I am just so impressed by my experience there today and so so appreciative for all the help I received. I was in a bit of a unique situation so I went into my appointment expecting an absolute hassle. To my surprise it was anything but! Everyone I spoke with throughout the process was extremely kind and helpful and my time spent in the agency was quicker and more efficient than I ever would have imagined. Thanks for making this process stress free!
Horrible, horrible, horrible! Lots of run around! Not taking walk-ins, appointments only. Ive been trying to get an appt for 4weeks without any luck. Online my application is still in processing status, and I travel in a week. You cant get info at the office, because you cant even get inside unless you have an appt. You cant get info from emailing them, youre advised to call there customer service number which has been busy for 2weeks. When I finally got through, had to wait on hold for 2.5hrs before getting to speak with someone. The lady was not helpful at all!! Just said the same thing the website said... no appts available, keep trying until you see an appt to book... I have to go to take other calls! This is craziness!! Need a better process!!!
I NEVER write reviews but I have to because of my experience. I realized on the night before an international flight my passport expired. I couldnt get an appointment online but I showed up the morning of my flight anyways. I was in and out in 2 hours with passport in hand and made my flight with tons of time to spare. Advice to my fellow travelers who are in the same boat: fill out all your paperwork in advance, bring printed proof of travel, a passport photo (CVS or walgreens is super fast), your expired passport, and a payment method. Also get there early!!! The website said the office opened at 10 am but they took people early. I was at a counter 10 mins after arriving. The efficiency and professionalism of this office is mind blowing. Have faith my fellow frazzled travelers you are in good hands here!!!
My husband applied for an Emergency passport. When he went in for his appointment they told him it was not immediate family. This was after several calls to ensure it was. The gentleman denied him. In a time of need and after already being through complete distress in dealing with a death this is how they treat people. If I could give negative stars I would be. I am completely appalled.
Amazing experience. I lost my passport the day before international travel. I have no idea what happened to it. But I was able to get a last minute appointment early in the morning and walked out with a new passport by 11 AM! You just need to make sure you have all the paperwork ready to go and get there early. I highly recommend!
Very well ran agency! Everything was efficient and quick which is something you dont often see in offices located downtown! I was assisted by an employee named Al who did an amazing job overall! Right from the start he was very helpful when trying to complete the application for my sons passport. Al was able to assist me very quickly and in a kind and friendly manner. I did not expect to receive the passport right then and there and thanks to Als assistance, I walked out of there with my sons passport and worry free ready for our travel! Thank you! :) God bless!
THIS PLACE SUCKS. I cannot express how horrible the service is, and I am not even exaggerating. I never wrote reviews, but this place was so bad I thought I would save people some trouble by writing this. I was here at 8 o’clock in the morning to get my passport, and I was one of the first people here. First of all, the people are very sassy and think they are better than everyone else. Make sure you have all of your papers or you will get yelled at! I waited for 6 HOURS TO GET MY PASSPORT. The people were not helpful at all and just seemed to be taking their sweet time while tons of people were rushing to get their passports. I will never be returning to this place again. You can’t even go on your phone or drink any water unless you want to get kicked out. Please take my advice and DO NOT go to this disgusting place unless you want to rip all your hair out.
There is no point in making an appointment because it means nothing! Pick up is a hassle! They said I could pick up my passport in two days. I took PTO to leave work early to get there on time, but you still have to wait. They do not call your number in order when picking up, it’s totally random. By the time they called my number, they told me it wasn’t ready and I was not given a good explanation as to why it wasn’t ready. Now I have to take more time off to go pick it up whenever it will be ready. Just mail it in early and save yourself the hassle!
I completed the application online, printed it, and got a passport photo taken at Walgreens near my home. I set an appointment for 1130 the same day. I arrived at the office at 1115. By 1145, I was writing this review. Efficient and friendly service.Update: I received my passport on the following Tuesday after applying Friday.
Everyone else is right, this is the most well run government office Ive ever been to. Belinda and Renee both helped me and were completely delightful, fast, and accommodating. I had a 9 AM appointment, arrived around 8:20 like I was told to and was out the door by 8:45. Dont ever bother using a third party if you need a fast passport - this was cheaper and faster than anything else on the internet.
PLEASE BE AWARE WHEN PAYING WITH CASH. In a recent visit to the Chicago Federal Passport Agency, I decided to pay my fee with cash at window #7 with Toya. Roughly two hours after leaving, I received a phone call from the window agent and her supervisor Regina accusing me of under paying. I was shocked by the accusations, when I handed her each bill one by one. One $100 bill, three $20’s, one $10 bill and a $5 bill. My receipt also states that I paid the $175 payment. In addition to my receipt, I was accompanied by two other adults who also witnessed the transaction. I really find it strange that a federal agency that deals only with exact currency that also produced a receipt after the transaction is calling me accusing me a paying customer of “under paying.” After threatening to cancel my son’s passport application, we went back to the Federal Passport Agency to file a complaint and ask for proof of the transaction. Regina the counter supervisor refused to produce evidence of the transaction upon my request, remind you cameras are all over this facility. In the end I had to pay an additional $20 to ensure the application was processed before our scheduled trip. Trust me this is not the end, I have already filed multiple complaints with several agencies. I trust that this issue will be resolved!
I usually dread going to government agencies/offices , but this has been the best one Ive been to. The staff is actually friendly. I had an appointment, but they do accept walk-ins which I didnt know about. Be sure to come prepared, it will make your life (and theirs) easier. Officers strict on phones being on silent, quite simple to follow.
Before I write a glowing review that is more typical of a great hotel or restaurant, Id encourage readers to dismiss the 1 star review that someone just left today. First, not eating or drinking or talking on cell phone in the waiting area is a simple rule so not sure why it angered the person that much. Second, the first people you meet with are extremely friendly - they start off the naturally stressful process by helping get you in the right line, get your forms, direct you where to go and what to do. Yes, it was packed with people so we waited an hour until our number was called. What do you expect, this isnt McDonalds. Anyway, we had totally screwed up our passport application via mail and then tried to expedite things via mail and that didnt work as fast as hoped.....so we went to Chicago from Milwaukee and dealt with a very nice person at the counter and then an exceptionally nice supervisor who laid out our options, offered his advice, said he would call us if anything popped up on his end that wed need to know. Just a ridiculously good service level from the US Govt. Did i say that? Yes. This could be a Harvard Business Case of how to serve customers. If this was a restaurant, I would be back! The supervisor said they process and resolve 400 in-person applications a day and then make them onsite each afternoon, so the prior reviewer needs to appreciate that the person needing a passport is at that building because of a problem they most likely caused, like I did. I bet 98% of the people are there because they are in a major jam and travel is within 2 weeks. Its only for emergencies before travel. Anyway, I would have tipped the guys if i could have. As for the cops that have to watch over the place...well, I can see some people getting upset about their personal situation making them mad at the world (like the woman at the counter who demanded a passport be made sooner so she could make a dinner meeting out of town). Come on people.....you go there because you are in a really bad jam that you probably caused yourself and you will leave with a passport at the end of the day. Sorry its not a drive thru, but this government experience is the single best one I have ever enjoyed. Stress level goes from max to nothing...they will take care of you, they are empathetic and super helpful.
We forgot to check the expiration dates on our childrens passports and realized it only the night before the flight. The flight was scheduled for June 5 at 2:30pm. We came to the passport office in the morning by 7:30 am. The service was the best ever! I still can not believe, but we got our passports by 11am. I did not know such things were possible. It must be the best passport agency in the world!
When its a Sunday, and you realize 2 of your kids passports expired and your international flight to spring break leaves in 5 days, what do you do?! Google it! Thanks to everyone who posted information about expediting passports. We downloaded the forms, got passport photos at Walgreens, and made copies of birth certificates, drivers licenses and flight reservations. Both parents took off work, kids got excused from school, drove 3 hours one way and arrived in Chicago ahead of our scheduled appt. Everyone was great! From security to the passport staff, all were friendly and helpful. We left Chicago 5 hours later with 2 updated passports! It wasnt a cheap or fast day. Our appt was at 10 am and we couldnt pick them up until 3 pm, but we got there at 2:30. Luckily the weather was good and theres a lot to do nearby. We followed the requirements on the website, and it went smoother than we expected. Hope to never have to do it again though!
Made an appointment online for Oct 9th, process was very smooth, people are were very nice & very professional. I have a business trip coming up, had all the required papers, paid the extra $15 for 1-2 day UPS shipping. Got the tracking no off the travel.state.gov site, Oct 11th my Passport showed up on my door ! Amazing Service. Thank You Chicago Passport Office.
This passport agency and its staff saved the day for my husband and I!!! He discovered he had lost his passport at 10pm on a Wednesday when our flight to Paris was the next day at 7pm. We made an appointment, showed up early with all the documents needed and they have been nothing short of miracle workers. They said his passport will be ready in 2 HOURS, giving us plenty of time to make our flight. Don’t bother using the expediting services you see online - come straight here!!!
Wow! Such an amazing place— I needed my passport renewed within 24 hours and walked in panicked. But every person who worked there (the guards that helped you in line and the women behind the counters) were SO helpful. This place is a well-oiled machine and I’m so thankful for them!!
I arrived around 1pm, there was no line to get through security, there was no line to get my ticket #, I waited for about 35-40 minutes for my ticket number to be called and the agent, Eve, apologized profusely for the wait (which I thought was pretty quick!). I was out of the building by 1:50pm. Eve made it an extremely easy, quick process for me and was very kind and professional! Will happily come back here any time I have a passport issue!
Shout out to Mellissa and Barbara!!! Thank you and your terrific team getting us off to France for our 30th Anniversary present from our beautiful daughter. We got to the airport only to discover the 90 day restriction on passport expiration date. After terrific service from Shannon at Delta I got to your office with paperwork in hand. Our flight departed at 4:20pm and I arrived at your office at 10:00. At 11:52am I had a new passport and on the way back to the OHare. Mellissa and Barbara settled my nerves and were genuinely sincere that everything was going to be ok. These people are truly trying to help everyone and do it with a smile!!! They were just awesome. It helps them to help you by doing a few things before arriving. Download and print form DS82 and fill it out. Bring 2 pics, took at Walgreens and bring your old passport if you have it.Cant thank Mellissa enough for her compassion and genuine smile!!!
Friendly people all around. My passport expired within 90 days which I found out when checking in to my flight. Arrived two hours early since I did not have an appointment. Once they opened I was quickly in and out of the appointment. I was placed in the waiting line and had my passport with in two hours. Pure life savers!
Far and away the best, most efficient experience Ive had at any government-run agency. Got my passport stolen on the blue line heading to OHare and had to do a walk-in expedited replacement. I arrived around 6:30am (they let you inside at 7 and open at 8). By 8:45 I was on the bus home with a new passport ready to be picked up in 3 business days (they can do same day if thats what your travel needs dictate).
Got my passport fast. Everyone was very helpful except for my lady that help me at the end. Renee didn’t seem like she wanted to be at work that day and definitely took it out on me with her attitude. She was so rude and made me feel uncomfortable the entire time rolling her eyes and a very rude tone of voice. She wouldn’t listen to me and I had to speak to a supervisor who got the job done. Thank u !
The Passport Agency, despite a heavy workload, is able to come through in the clutch when you need assistance. I had to obtain a second passport for travel in December 2019 on very short notice. CPA was able to work with me and expedite the passport approval, along with issuance of the passport, within a matter of hours.Their assistance allowed me and my family to avoid disruptions to our travel plans—and the ladies and gents working at CPA were very professional the entire way! Thank you!
Needed a last minute passport due to my own oversight. Was able to get a same day passport without an appointment. The people there seem to really care and take pride in being able to help people. Such an efficient, well run operation, especially for a government run agency.
We had an 11:30 apt got there at 10am and were helped right away evwryone was courteous and Marie prepared our applications with a smile as well as giving us an arrival date and explaining how to track our passports through the website. We were sone and out the door by 10:40 best govt.office experience ever! Keep up the great work!
Horrible experience for my daughter. They do not understand adoption laws. They sent my daughters original passport from her birth country to another applicant! Luckily the other applicant returned it to the passport agency. Its been over 9 weeks and they keep asking for more documents that they did not ask for upfront. I am not impressed with their ability to properly process documents much less not lose them. Agency needs a makeover.
Very impressive!!! Staff was very friendly. Process was very efficient. Facility was very clean. Just remember, you cant talk on the phone while in line. it didnt take that long to submit an application or pick up my passport. Im very proud of the way this was implemented.
Not only was everyone super nice but the officers on watch were on point. This guy tried to go through security with a gun. I am not someone who hates guns, my father was Marine (RIP) so grew up around guns but why do people think it is ok to bring guns to schools or, in this case, a federal building? Thank you to the officers today for keeping us safe!
I would choose a negative rating if one was available. Drove 4.5 hours to renew my passport for a trip that was happening in 9 days. Couldnt wait until the same day 3-4pm pick up window and paid extra for 2 day shipping. Called the 877# 22 times after the 2 days past and they still didnt mail it. Ended up taking the train down (the day before my trip) and wasting another day to get my passport. Paying $195 for an expedited passport ended up costing approx $700 when all said and done with time away from work, gas for first trip, train fees etc. All these expedited fees and they cannot do one simple task, put it in the mail! Ridiculous!
Had to pick up my sons passport and applied for my other 2 kids the same day. Told them if they can have them all ready So I dont drive back they said YES! ! It was very helpful knowing Im almost 2 hours away. THANK YOU for all the help. The wait isnt bad at all except for passport pickup .Great service
Thrilled with this place! I am headed to Italy on my honeymoon tomorrow and had no idea about the rule of 6 months left on passport. Luckily I googled passport rules and discovered it before my flight. My passport only had 3 months left and I was panicked! I was able to get in the morning before my trip and had a new passport in hand by 3PM. So grateful! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Great office and service they are a perfect example of government that works for the people. It was a pleasure to renew my passport from the moment I attended my appointment at the Chicago Passport Agency everyone was professional and helpful to me and others. Keep up the good work.....
Drove 3 hours and paid $230 to get an expedited passport. Their “systems” were down the way I went so I wasn’t able to pick it up the same day. I then paid to get it express shipped to my home. When I received it my name was spelled wrong, so I’m thinking I need to drive 3 hours to go back and have it corrected, only to find out they still have my documents necessary for them to even revise and reprint it. My vacation is in 3 days and I have a useless passport and no documents to receive a new one.
AVOID AT ALL COST!!! Do not rely on this place for any services whatsoever, they will not answer the phone, they will not respond to emails, and you cannot make appointments. Even in life or death situations. Do not waste time or money trying to get assistance from this pointless building that is a waste of good taxpayer dollars.
Absolutely fantastic service!! They were kind and caring, but most importantly organized and efficient. They are also very fair. You’re going to be upset if you come here missing documents or your photo. They will ask you to go down the street to get your photo, etc. Also, it’s better to be early in the day.As long as you’re kind, courteous, and have all your documents, they will take great care of you!
I remembered going here 12+ years ago to get my passport and it being a terrible experience, so I was preparing for the worst when I went recently to renew it. To my surprise, everything was organized, and everyone working there was super friendly, and I was done much faster than expected. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
I was so nervous going I was going through a very difficult time I needed a passport for en emergency and to my surprise the staff was super professional and very kind. I was under the impression that I would be given a hard time but all the contrary. I couldnt stop saying thank you. Truly appreciate the service and again thank you.
After messing up a foreign trip not realizing I needed 6 months remaining on my passport, I went in here on July 3rd (expecting it may be closed) and was pleasantly surprised and was in and out in a little more than 2 hours after the office opened and was even able to make a 1:25 PM flight at OHare to Hong Kong with plenty of time to spare. Excellent service!!
I paid for expidiated service because I was traveling on less than two weeks. I Told them my travel dates, I was assured that my passport would be here by the next Tuesday. I also asked if there was any more fees I could pay to make the process go faster , still I was told no I had paid it all and my passport qould be on time guaranteed. I called and looked on line and my passport will not be here until the day I leave . Now I have $1,0000 in rebooking fees for the trip . The passsport agency told me over the phone I could have paid to overnight the passport but by the time I found out it was too late! I SPECIALLY asked about others fees to insure it was there on time and was never told about a oved night fee. I would have happily paid it !
Unfortunately let my passport expire then found out I have to fly to Switzerland for work. Set appt for a Friday and picked it up on today (Tuesday). Had to pay expedited fee, but my company paid for it. Only problem is having to go into the city twice cuz the dont give you any kind of FedEx option to return it to you. If they did a FedEx option I wouldve given 5 stars.
I was going to give 4 stars but interacting with one of the customer service ppl (some black woman I cant remeber her name I was so upset about it) I accidentally left my id card on my bed (I dont live too far) and after I apologize saying oops I forgot my Id at home Ill go back and get it this woman had the nerve to be little and insult me in fort of my mother and other people going like your a grown man (Im 23) how could u for get something like that blahs blah blah I was so shocked and embarrassed that she would say such things totally unprofessional! I live 10 mins away I can easily get it back there was no need for such talk. I hope I never see this woman again and the folks should get better staff worker who should keep their comments to them selfs and do their jobs instead of judging and belittling their customers.
They miss spelled my daughter name on her passport, had to drive 5 hours to get it corrected and mailed in 3-4 days they said. 2 weeks later, it was still no passport, called 3 times just to hear they have no idea where is my daughter passport and birth certificate at. we are down to 4 days and still no passport.
Can someone please tell me how I come to contact someone in the office I leave August 5th and I only have my oldest son passport I still need mine and my lil child passport I tried call but its always busy ! I cant make appointment cause there is none available 😕 can anyone help me please!!!
Google maps was horrendous (if youre not familiar with the area its almost required for you to use it). Parking was difficult to find (1 block west of the building). Also be prepared to do airline travel style security check. If in doubt for an item DONT BRING IT or they will throw it away or youll have to trek back to your car which you already parked a block away.
Worst experience of my life as soon as I entered the building .. Was asking the Secruity guards where is the Passport section .. didn’t even answer me and states immigration Right here ! Then I went in got searched then had to come back and go through Secruity again .. They need to do a better job on teaching and training there employees they hire ... Respect being one of them.
Horrible service and attitude. Agree with the reviews that mention bullying. Agent Brian F was inexplicably rude and condescending even though I was as repectful and pleasant as possible. I did get my passport, but theres no need to be rude to the public you serve and those that pay for your salary with tax dollars.
I am very grateful to this place as I obtained my passports the same day.I was a little nervous because of all the bad reviews, but it is completely different from what they say. Obviously it is difficult to get an appointment, thats why it is for emergencies or emergencies, but once you get it, everything is very simple.Very friendly and professional staff. I had my 9:00 am appointment, at 9:10 am I had already finished my appointment and I returned at 2:00 pm to pick up my passport.Thank you 🙏🏽 God Bless

2022-05-18I want to thank Tiffany and all the staff / guards who made this experience great! I was worried given my flight leaves in 4 days! My children & I were treated with respect! Tiffany was very understanding and the process was smooth!Make sure everyone to read the email confirmation to avoid long wait times! Makes everyone’s life easier!Make a copy of your proof of citizenship!Copy of your ID & most important your Picture. It will save you time and everyone else waiting.Proof of travel within 14 days* usually they schedule you 5 days prior but make sure it is printed!* Advice from someone who was sitting next to me despite him having his passport accepted / pending issuance he took all his documents as precaution so if your going to get a passport that’s as being processed etc take extra documents … to avoid delay/ and or issues word of advice.Once again Thank you Tiffany & the rest of the staff / security team! good experience during a hectic last minute urgent travel.

2022-04-16The employees working in this location are awesome. Great customer service from everyone including the security. When you enter the building you will have to go through medal detectors. Afterwards you’ll have to take the elevator upstairs where there is more security in front of the door. They will be checking for your confirmation number in order to enter so make sure you have it handy. I showed up at 9:30am even though my reservation wasn’t until 12 noon. They assisted me anyway. Checked all of my paperwork and gave me a receipt to come back between 2-4pm to pick up my passport.I had to fly into Chicago to have my passport expedited since my flight was within two weeks and the agency in my state was booked. The team in Chicago was stress free, easy going and very helpful.Come prepared with your passport photo, online application printed and signed with black ink, confirmation of your flight details and your most recent passport. Good luck!

2022-03-22Hands down a wonderful and pleasant experience. Every single person I encountered at the passport agency was incredibly helpful and kind, from the moment I entered the building to the moment I picked up my passport. For context in case anyone is looking for a shred of hope, my appointment was at 10:30am and their team was able to process my passport renewal for a 3pm pick-up! My biggest tips are:1) HAVE *ALL* of your paperwork ready to go otherwise you will have to wait in line again. The easier you make it for the agency by being organized and prepared the smoother the experience will be for you. Plain and simple.2) BE KIND, everyone joining you on the 9th floor is high on anxiety too. The entire staff at the agency is working hard to ensure you get your passport and they are not out to get you -- they want everyone to have a successful experience.Best wishes and safe travels, wherever youre planning on going!

2022-02-26I had a great experience and wanted to share the process since I know I was panicking after discovering my passport was lost. You can schedule an appointment 14 days before your departure. I recommend calling as early as possible. I called at 8AM and by 8:15AM I was able to schedule my appointment for the Friday before my Sunday flight. This was the only day available but it seemed like there were plenty of time slots available.I gathered all of the required documents they told me I would need. Everything was listed in the email they sent me after my appointment was scheduled. It included my ID, birth certificate, proof of travel, and DS-11 form. I scanned and printed everything out (although the ID and birth certificate scan ended up not being necessary in my experience).Upon arrival I was let in with the confirmation number that was from my email. I went through security (who was very kind) and they directed me to the ninth floor. They asked for my documents, I then immediately was called to the next window, and everything was processed. The total cost for replacing my lost passport was $225. I was given a receipt and told to come back from 2-4 with the receipt. It was filled with people ready to pick up their passport by then, but I still waited less than an hour.Overall the whole process was quick and simple. Everyone was very friendly as well. You can tell the employees are there to make sure you make it to your destination. I was incredibly grateful as were so many of the people there. Just bring the required documents, be kind, and the whole experience should be quick and painless!

2022-03-14Listen to these reviews. The phone customer service is great. Courteous and professional. However I had booked a flight for March 25 and before booking called the Chicago Passport agency trying to make an appt for a passport and was told to call March 14 since they do appointments two weeks before only and five days before your travel date you get an appointment. So i called today bright and early only for them to tell me there is an appointment for Friday only after my flight. Can someone please help? This is ridiculous.

2022-04-25I had the death security emergency. My father died during the weekend, so I cant make an appointment because the phone line doesnt work during weekend. I needed to renew my childrens passports to take an international flight. On Monday I decided to go there without an appointment (which was unable to schedule). The security didnt let us to go in. They all were very mean to us. When I tried to explain the situation one security told me to not waste his time. The other security just walk to us and told we can call to our congressman, so maybe he can make an appointment for us and laughs. It was heartbreaking to my kids. They just lost their only grandpa. I called to make an appointment in front of the building and they told me nothing available for this day and next day, and our funeral was in two days and we had the tickets. So why you call this situation emergency if you treat us like regular urgent and make fun of someones death? THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.

2022-07-18We arrived at our scheduled 9am appointment and waited approximately 2 hours. When it was our turn to go to the counter, a seemingly kind and warm woman told us that she would take care of us and encouraged us to return at 2pm to pick up my daughter’s expedited passport because the process typically takes 3 hours. She wrote on our ticket 2-4pm as our return time and the ticket was stamped with a 3pm return appointment. We returned promptly at 2pm but waited an additional 3 hours with no explanation as to why there was such a significant delay. I live two miles away, so we could have stayed home, made lunch, napped, worked, exercised or anything other than wait 3 hours in a freezing, nearly empty room. Valuing someone’s time should be a part of the customer service experience, and in a digital world there HAS to be a better way to serve tax paying Americans. Very disappointed.

2022-03-14Chicago Passport provided outstanding customer service that reunited my son with his mother after 9 long months of being apart due to the pandemic. The ability to recognize and separate exceptional circumstances for processing is the characteristic of a truly well run bureaucracy. Thank you for your time and attention.

2022-06-14It is certainly NOT a fun experience, but the actual workers are pretty nice. The security guards take their jobs too seriously. All in all I spent 4 total hours here today. Not bad but could have been much faster with better organization. Thank God I dont have to do it for another 10 years.

2022-05-26Thank you for all of your help. Chicago supported me and my family to rectify an issue for my son’s passport. They were quick and efficient. Definitely understood the systems and how to navigate the procedures quickly so we could get our issue resolved quickly. Thank you Ms Boyd.
