Downtown Cairo looks like a war zone. I’ve never seen a city in such disarray. The leadership has the nerve to put up “No Littering” signs by the river, blaming visitors for their rodent problem.

I grew up in Cairos Historic Park District. My family still lives there. My grandparents on my fathers side lived there before their passing. The house that was my fathers parents home, now his home is on the other side of St. Marys Park, on Park Place West, from where I grew up on Washington Avenue. Grew up within sight of Magnolia Manor, and Riverlore Mansion. Cairo despite being such a troubled little place of so much lost promise gave me a fantastic childhood, adolescents, and early adulthood. Almost all of my happiest memories of my life happened here. I attended preschool, kindergarten, grade school, and junior high in Cairo at parochial institutions. Even once served as a volunteer firefighter here. Be kind to old Cairo will you please? She is a very old but still grand as she can be for her age ole town. Many a famous individual landed here, and if you are to say you have traveled the world and have seen it all but you have not been to Cairo Illinois, then you have most certainly not seen a great deal! Cairo has more history and contrivance held on a narrow spit of land between two of the nations biggest rivers and will surprise you at just how deep the history can go. Cairo will always be in my heart as I love her dear. May she outlive all that ails her!

Looks like something from a movie so sad how history is lost how and why baffle me how such a great city can turn into a wreck. It will take years and years for this place to turn around and new generations will accept that burnedout buildings is the norm
