Aquarium Adventure in other cities:
All my fish needs come from this store! Always enjoy talking with the staff , which are extremely helpful and knowledgeable... i bought from many other stores and aquarium adventures blows them all out of the water! Always healthy colorful fish.... i recommend this store for your aquatic needs, you wont be sorry!
This place is amazing! It has any type of fish, decor, supplies and everything else you may need for your fish tank. They even have eels and stingrays! Prices are very reasonable as well. They also have a lot of different things for all types of pets. They have a lot of puppies that you can play and buy, kittens, birds, all types of rodents, hermit crabs and fish. I highly recommend this place.
Well I have shopped at aquarium adventure before. its an okay place. I think some of their livestock on both saltwater and freshwater are a bit overpriced. I dont go to Hoffman estates that often and you can save if you get a membership about 20%. On livestock aquarium supplies, fish food etc. It seems like they are up in maintaining their fish tanks and keeping their fish and livestock healthy even their aquatic plants as well as their saltwater fish and corals and amenities. Its just that Ive been to other fish places that are much better than this in the Chicagoland and suburban areas that I can think of. Other than that, its not bad but its nothing spectacular or excellent. Do come here if you are in the Hoffman estates area or the northwest suburbs near Schaumburg, IL if you are going to get into the hobby of aquarium fish keeping both saltwater and freshwater. I have been in the hobby for the past 8 years. prior to that as a kid it was on and off with this hobby since my folks didnt have enough money to spend on the equipment the food and the supplies of maintenance.
Two stars because of the wide selection of equipment. Beyond that, their animals need much better care. Have seen many emaciated, diseased saltwater fish. Sad to see their Petland dogs (do your homework).I asked for pricing on an aquarium and stand and the sales kid climbed up on top of 75 gallon glass tanks standing on end. Would you want to take the chance on a glass tank in your home that people have climbed on? Madness.
Extremely sad to visit, animals are in extremely small cages and there’s no bedding in the crates for the puppies, just metal cages. Extremely sickening to walk through here. Fish just left to float in the tanks with other fish, and not even removed. I do not recommend and I hope this place shuts down.
Wont go there no more they mess up price they thread to call police after I payed and left store i spent a lot there over years will go othere 6 pet shops to get what I need now I run a 1500 gals systems here I need or want something I get IT AND PAY FOR IT as a Customer
There are a lot of cool animals at this store, but I sometimes feel like their main focus is all on their overpriced puppy mill dogs. There are some really cool salespeople there, especially in reptiles, but most seem like they cant be bothered unless theyre selling you a dog. This is one of the only places in the area where I can buy feeder rats, so I really appreciate having it around, but I wish they would offer rescue animals instead.
Courtney (Tommy’s Team) is amazing and awesome. She has a wonderful personality and very professional. While servicing the tank she was very neat and clean. She did mind us asking her a lot of questions and was very knowledgeable. She should get a raise because she watches Below Deck which is our our favorite show. We will definitely be requesting her in the future to service our turtle tank. We will recommend her to our family and friends. Thank you for having her on Tommy’s team. Our tank was serviced on 9/10/21 in Montgomery Illinois.
Bought a few plants for my tank. Brought home no less than three unwanted snail species and dragonfly larvae with said plants. Associates didnt look like they wanted to be there and didnt offer any help either. I wont be returning simply because Ive spent the last few months trying to oust all the snails I didnt want and now I have to deal with a deadly bug issue-with likely more to come since they like to lay tons of eggs and are difficult to find at best.
Its hard to replace place when it comes to the reptiles and fish the employees in that department are excellent always willing to help and provide great service however I got a beautiful savannah monitor and was needing some mice I got the monitor within 5 minutes but then was told only the people in khaki shirts can help me with getting some mice first of all I had to search and found a group of five employees sitting around a table chit-chatting I asked one to come help me with the mice he came over and I let him know which ones I would need approximately 6 to 8 we waited about 15 minutes and he never came back this made me very sad because I love the store
Courtney (a member of Tommys team) came out on June 15, 2021 to service our pond. She was awesome! She was very careful with our fish and pond. She was on time, professional, friendly, and communicative. She worked diligently to ensure that the pond was in great condition and offered several suggestions to keep our fish happy and our pond healthy. She even followed up with a phone call a week later. I have had other pond services in the past who charged more but did not give the same level of service that I received from Aquarium Adventure and Courtney. I will definitely use their pond service again and would be extremely happy to have Courtney performing the service. Way to go Courtney!!
Place is ok, knowledgeable staff in the fish department , But I did feel like I was taken a little advantage off by the sales person because of my lack of knowledge in that field. Bought stuff I did not fully need but was told I need by the staff. Will go back again but will do my own dd before I go buy anything else.
I like coming here but they need friendlier staff... every time I come here and need help everyone acts like helping is an inconvenience to their time. I own a lot of reptiles, talking 30 of them, as well as fish and tarantulas but asking them about their selection they have for sale they treat you like you are dumb and have no idea what a lizard even is... besides that the store is very clean and nice.
While I whole-heartedly disapprove of the sale of puppies in the way they are sold here, their fish selection is pretty darn good. We drive an an hr and 15 minutes to get all our fish from here as we have never had sickness show up like we do from most other pet stores. While I would prefer supporting a local fish store, the quality and selection here is just too good to pass.
Has more than the average petco/smart, but still pretty basic, just the big brand stuff regardless of quality, and the employees, even the ones considered “fish experts,” don’t seem to know much. No blame on them, I’m sure the company doesn’t pay half of what they should to get actual experts to work there. The only water test methods they offer are known to be extremely inaccurate (strip tests and API for nitrates) and I was told several times that they had items available when I called but didn’t when I arrived at the store. Nice selection of tank decor wood.
We always love going to this place. We used to go there frequently when I worked in Bolingbrook. So this was our first time going in quite a while. I love that the cages are open to where you can hold or Pet the animals. The staff is always really nice with the exception of a few of the ones who get aggravated at the ones who like to hold them.
Been frequenting this location for years and never had an issue. With any of the associates until today. I have never had a problem picking up rats to see what their reaction would be until today. One associate was very nice but another was very rude and then we had a manager hovering and giving us a dirty look. I understand that there are rules but when you enforce them it is not about what you say but how you say it. I will not be going back. This place is overpriced on 90% of their supplies and fish and there are cheaper alternatives 20 minutes further away.
They have tons of fish which is my main use of this store. The staff is knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. This makes for a pleasant experience every time I go in. They have helped me keep my aquarium in good health for over a decade. The largest aquarium stuff store I have ever seen. Dont forget to look at the puppies when you go.
Aquarium Adventure is a outstanding store to shop at.They were very helpful to me when my filter broke and flooded my floor. The fire department came to my house because the water from filter ran into my alarm. They replaced my filter with a new one. Thank you Aquarium Adventure
Great place to go for animals. They are a little on the pricey side but if its quality and service you want this is the place to go. Super knowledgeable people who can recommend the basics and then show you what else you can grab as treats and extras. J like they dont pressure you into buying anything its all your choice.
Its a good day spent with the family to go and enjoy looking at everything and deciding what to do for your new pet project. Mine is fish! Just go and have fun! The employees there are good with information and are helpful on getting you started with whatever you choose.
I recently bought corals from there, after getting them home had bubble algae on them, I know I should have inspected them much closer at the store, but they were my first corals added to the tank and we picked up a few fish while we were there also so there was a lot of activity. One of the other coral had a spaghetti worm on it. So in closing please inspect all corals closely before bagging them, they’re system is populated w many pests and you’ll just be bringing them home to your tank. The staff was friendly and helpful, however after going back for an inspection a bit closer at their tanks and equipment I’d recommend finding another LFS to deal with tbh, good luck in your reef and fish quest.
Would like to give it more than two stars, but I drove an hour to this place because their website says theyre open till 9:00, but they decided to close at 8:00 for the last 2 years. According to the staff, their owners are either too lazy, stupid, or irresponsible to update their hours online. Also this is just a Petland chain store. Its a big box store pretending to be a mom and pop
Awesome fish store, large selection of fresh and saltwater fish, friendly staff. Dry goods are a tad overpriced but convenience factor is nice. Fish prices are fair but best times to go is during sales jist be sure to get there early.Fish club membership is worth it if you are a frequent shopper as well. Only reason Im giving 4 instead of 5 is because corals, plants, and some fish are overpriced. Otherwise overall great store.
Widest selection of live aquarium plants I have ever seen. Good variety of freshwater fish, as well. Bought two aquariums from this location-- one 70 gallon has been working well for the past six years, one aquarium kit I bought was broken when I got home and opened the box but they gave me a replacement quickly and hassle-free, and now that aquarium is running smoothly.
Fish specialists are very knowledgable in regard to specific species and husbandry pertaining to them. They dont push sales and they dont encourage people to buy fish that will outgrow their setups like most places which is awesome. I come here for all of my aquarium needs or just for advice for any issues I have run into for my tanks. If u are in the fish hobby this is def the place to go for marine and freshwater for sure. 100% recommend!
They keep all small animals and birds out in the open for anyone to grab at them. It must make them really anxious (as a guinea pig owner I know how much they can like to hide). They also still sell hermit crabs. Betta fish are not kept great which is ironic given how expansive their fish selection is. Their return policy can only give you store credit in return. The different amount of fish types they have is staggering but to me the cons arent worth making the trip.
Lots of employees, no one available to help me. I came to purchase shrimp brine fish food, fish pellet fish food. Finally saw a decent size Puffer fish for $25. And I needed 3 live plants. But no one to get the fish or plants so I left purchasing nothing. It’s always like this here. It’s frustrating.
Love this place! Tons of fresh and salt water fish; some of which are hard to find. Biggest negative with this place is their prices. Theyre more expensive than petsmart. They have tons of four legged friends (dogs, cats, bunnies to name a few). Recently had some work done inside; more puppy/customer rooms. They have it all. Always expanding their reptile section. I believe that they even do parties. Checking out usually takes longer than desired. We often take our young children here on rainy days due to it being like a mini zoo.
Prior to going here, I read a lot of mixed reviews on Facebook, but I decided that I would give it a try, seeing that it was the closest aquarium specialty store to me. I was disappointed when I had an experience very similar to those who have previously reviewed. Here is a synopsis of my experience: I walked in and at the front, there were two employees chatting away. As I moved my way toward them, they did not make eye contact and in fact walked away without asking if I needed help, or even a greeting when I had walked in the door. At this point, I decided to go wait in line at the register, because I thought the cashier might be able to help. He pointed me towards customer service, which made complete sense. Two people were in line in front of me when I got to the desk. They were helped relatively fast, but a line quickly started to form behind me, and it was clear they were understaffed, or perhaps just lazily staffed. Once it was my turn, a young man (perhaps 19 or 20) asked what I needed help with. I was (and still am) looking for help with a 3 gallon aquaponics tank in which I would like to house two mystery snails. I explained that I have zero experience with aquariums, but that I had added denitrifying bacteria and dechlorinator in the water thus far and have been letting the filter run for a couple of days before I went to purchase the snails. I chose gravel from Petsmart that was naturally colored, without any red stones for fear of copper as it poisons snails. He told me that “big box store” stuff is not safe for aquatic life, and while my gravel may not be the best choice, that felt like an exaggeration. However, I obliged and picked out the smallest bag, seeing as I have a very small tank. It was 16 dollars, which I am fine with, I am just adding it here for reference. He then began to talk about water quality, and it was quite clear he didn’t know what kind of environment mystery snails need as he talked in circles and contradicted himself for about five minutes. The chemical he showed me (I apologize, I don’t remember exactly what it is) but it was at a price point of 25 dollars. The smallest serving for this chemical was one teaspoon for five gallons. Once he read the label and realized this, he had the stupid idea to recommend buying a 5 gallon bucket to concoct my new water in. Can’t I use half a teaspoon or even measure it in grams? We just sort of awkwardly moved along as I didn’t pick up the chemical. We moved to aquatic plants, for which they had a huge selection and they all seemed healthy to me, bright green and no dead leaves. I purchased two moss balls, an anubias, and a red wendtii. They all ranged from around 8-11 dollars each. I was totally fine with that because I assume I am getting high quality products that are hopefully an investment for a new hobby. After we picked out the plants, he led me to the mystery snails. This is where it actually gets bad. I was HORRIFIED to see close to 200 snails in a ten gallon tank at largest. There were was a layer of them in some spots of three snails high, not even being able to be on gravel. I understand that they are not the most desired creature, and do not require much space but even from my lack of experience, I knew that was a horrible environment for the snails. I am running out of characters, but know that he rushed me through the process of picking a pet, a horrible thing to do. Once I got my snails, he walked me to the register to drop them off, said “have a nice day” and left me on my way. He did not ask if there was anything else I needed. I was nowhere near done picking out all the essentials for my tank. I only spent 63 dollars in total, but I was willing to spend over 250 to get the proper necessities for my tank. They lost out on my money that time, and forever in the future. As far as the snails go, less than 24 hours have passed, and they are showing signs of being ill, and I fear they will die. I have never written a Google review as I have never had such a bad customer experience like this at a store, but now I want to warn people.
They may have some cool fish but all the workers care about is getting the sale. Very pushy sales reps, not all of them are educated on what is best for your animals either. I have gotten fish from here multiple times and all my fish at home died due to a illness that the fish I purchased from aquarium adventure had. Would not reccomend going here
Lots of supplies. But I am very careful about buying fish here. I have had a few outbreaks of ich after buying fish here, while I havent had the same issue at other stores. And they usually refuse to give any sort of refund or compensation. Use a quarenteen tank if you buy fish from here!
Great selection. Ridiculous pricing a 3 clown loach was $45 at member pricing! This place is always top dollar pricing. Even the huge deals that say for example 50% off live fish is a farce . They bump pricing up about 30% during the sale. Petco and Petsmart (if you find one that the employees do their job and care for the fish) are way fair a price. Do yourself a favor and find a good non corporate owned shop.
My goto place for fish and aquarium supplies. The fish are a tad overpriced but I have never had a problem with sick fish so worth the extra $$ imo. Staff is usually helpful and knowledgeable about the wide selection of animals(they have some reptiles as well). When a big sale is on expect to wait to be helped as they get very busy.
I would have given 5 stars if the pricing wasnt so ridiculously high at this store. They have an excellent selection of freshwater and marine fish, and also carry supplies you cant find at your regular chain pet store. One of the best fish stores around, if not the best.
I would give zero stars, if possible. This place is insanely overpriced on both equipment and fish. The EXACT same eshopps 3rd generation 75 gallon protein skimmer is $40-50 more than if you were to purchase it on marine depot or amazon. The EXACT same Kent media reactor is $100 here, but only $55 at Petco. As for fish, they are also ridiculously overpriced and they’re sickly, which the staff does not care about. I saw a powder blue tang that they wanted about $120 for (only $65 at my LFS), and it was laying on the floor of the tank, on its side, breathing heavily. I brought it to the attention of a guy who worked there. He shrugged his shoulders and said, “it happens”, then proceeded to walk away. I left the store immediately and swore to never purchase a fish there. After an unpleasantly rude phone call this morning, where I was just trying to get prices (because their website is garbage and doesn’t show anything they sell, let alone inventory), I have made the decision to not purchase equipment there either. Its better to just wait a day or two for the delivery from a company with reasonable prices. I would suggest ANY other store for fish, because their staff just does not care about their health.
Ive been here several times. Sometimes I can get people to wait on me, sometimes I cant. Its really hit-or-miss. Their staff seem knowledgable, their selection is good, and their prices are mostly fair. In all fairness, I just cant get over the fact that their dogs come from puppy mills (while thousands of puppies die daily in shelters). I know that has nothing to do with fish, but to me, its an overall ethic held by the company which leaves a bad taste in my mouth. (Theyll tell youre theyre good breeders, but ethically responsible companies encourage rescue adoptions.) I love all animals - those with fins ~and~ fur. Id rather give my money to a company that holds similar values to me.
Hailey is amazing!! She has been helping us for a couple months figure out exactly what we need in order to upgrade our 55g tank to something much larger. I have a vet large cat fish and several oscars that outgrew my tank very quickly. She has always been able to answer every question, help with anything we need, and help make our decisions easier. I am so thankful for her!!
Save yourself some time if you are shopping for fish. Large selection but have tried buying fish from them several times. After the first two times I learned you better be ready to medicate the fish because they WILL 100% have some disease. I have easily purchased 25+ fish and none have survived. I am lucky enough to have a quarantine tank so they have not gotten my other fish sick that I have purchased from various fish specialty stores in the Chicagoland area.
Store was disgusting near puppies and the puppies were unbathed and brown from their own feces. Employees in charge of puppies were rude. My mother and I were actually looking to buy a puppy yet we walked out disappointed at 830 because the employee said they were closing. Would not recommend and I WOULD recommend sending these puppies to a better home. These animals need to be taken care of better.
Absolutely amazing pet store where you can do play with the puppies (Well, most of them). You can also pick up the hamsters, birds and more. They had several animals and a very large collection of fish, both freshwater and brackish. The people more or less knew what they were talking about and were able to provide decent suggestions and my friend ended up buying a fish tank along with 7 fish and several decorations.
I come here sometimes for aquarium supplies and decor, ect. The selection is fine. I dont recommend buying fish from here though, they dont seem to take care of them very well and many of them appear sick. Something Ive noticed though is that each time Ive been here Ive ALWAYS had staff be rude while cashing me out. As if its a major inconvenience that I need to pay for the item I want to buy, sorry.
The people are friendly enough but that is because they work on commission. They dont always give the right information.Edit: Dropped review to a 1 from a 2. We recently went back there, they had a sale on fish and lets face it, they have a larger selection than some stores. However, I was grossely disappointed on their 48hr fish policy which was definitely longer the last time we shopped here.I will find a new place with good selection that has enough quality to guarantee longer life than 48 hours...We put our fish in a tank that previously held some guppies and then before that tetras and they survived fine so it was not my water quality. Not all fish handle the transition well. Thats why places have a 1-2 week refund policy.
Two weeks ago Caleb was so helpful and full of insight. He helped me get a handle on some problems I have been having; instead of just throwing random cures at it like I was. We talked out what Ive been through with my tank, stocking levels, temperatures, water source, water testing, and we were able to pinpoint some issues and I now understand how and why they were happening. He helped me figure out the issue and get exactly what I need to fix it and gave me some good pointers to help preven recurrence without needing to spend a small fortune. Thats the best kind of customer service, someone who is knowledgeable, informative, and cares about the pet and customer and helps them navigate through issues. It was definitely worth the hour drive out there. Two weeks later and my tank is doing amazing!!The only think I didnt like was how heavily stocked they were with puppies.
Went here for the first time today for aquarium plants, fish, etc. This place is impressive, both with its selection and knowledgeable staff. Beth was the salesperson that helped me and knew exactly what they had in stock and where it was. The one question she couldnt answer she found an answer for right away. I am definitely going back again and would highly recommend this to other aquarium enthusiasts.
I am an avid customer of this store, I believe they try to bring in a nice variety of fresh water fish, sometimes the tanks/fish look questionable. The redeeming quality of the stores weakness is one of their sales guys by the name of Caleb. He keeps me coming back because his knowledge AND customer service is reason enough to put up with some aquarium maladies. Look for him at the store, he seems to work all the time. This guy makes my fish tanks a better place!
Ben and Tyler are nice guys. Other than that I will never go back to this place again. I hated it. There is like 10 managers all working at the same time. When you need a manager for something. They call them and it takes 10 minutes for them to come over. All of there fish look terrible. The tanks look terrible. There all covered in algae and a lot of the fish are sick. Also the staff could care less about the customer service part. All they care about is commission which I think is a joke because its a pet store. I will never come back here again. All of their saltwater fish are over priced. Its like 35 bucks for a cleaner shrimp. You can go anywhere and get them for 15. Dont go here. It will be a waste of your time
Asked for 20 Cardinal Tetra and 10 Otocinclus, the associate returned two bags without any apparent effort to count the fish. Both counts looked under what Id asked for, I asked a second associate who said they looked right to him. Thinking I must be the crazy one, I checked out me order. All said and done I have 16 Cardinals and 9 otos. I have to say this seems like either pure laziness or a deliberate effort to short the customer. I was willing to look past high loss rates in past purchases as I had always been given my complete order. I understand the need of large stores to prevent over counts for loss prevention, but shorting by 20% will have me not coming back to this store.
Aquarium Adventure has too many fish. Yes. This fish store has too many fish. While there is almost every common and uncommon fish you could possibly want, they seriously need to reassess things. There were multiple species mixed across multiple tanks and I found myself getting confused as I browsed. This is in addition to ridiculous overcrowding, too many big plecos in little tanks, and an otherwise depressing amount of sick, miserable, dying fish. It wasnt a matter of picking out the ones that were healthy but the ones that looked the least sick. At least the employees are personable and happy to help even when they look worked to the bone, but they arent the wisest about fish.As a store branded around aquariums, it is a one stop shop for general needs, your kids or your first tank, or any aquatic nerds with moderately deep pockets. They do have axolotls living in with their live plants for sale, but aside from their displays I didnt see any rimless or new tank trends, or any variety in planted tank substrate. They gotta do something with their website and tap into the aquascaping trend. For some weird reason, they have almost all of Seachems products on the floor except Stressguard...Their dead fish policy sucks btw. Return within 48 hours with dead fish, receipt, water sample, and any refund is only for store credit. If youre a corydoras fan, they have 6-10 different varieties at any point, but buy less than you want and be prepared to nurse some of them back to health. Theyve never been on sand and many are living with 20-50 fish over their heads who eat their sinking pellets, assuming theyre even fed any. 2
DON’T SHOP HERE!! Went there a few times, first impression is nice but the customer service is horrendous! Sat there for 20-30 min at the fish counter literally asking for help, and got a extremely rude and ignorant sales associate, who didnt even help with any questions or sales, and sadly the main reason i will never shop there again is due to the fact they are knowingly starving a female target mandarin goby, i was there weeks ago, noticed the fish im a tank with a nearly bare bottom and was skinnier than paris hilton, then a day or two ago i went back there for food etc and seen it again! This time it looked like a hollocost victim, it broke my heart so i asked if i could purchase him and i asked how much since there was NO PRICE and she was extremely malnurished, to the point where she may never recover, one of the associates made comments about not being surprised hes dying and that it will probably be dead in a day or two, do i offered to buy the fish to save its life and they wanted $35 for the fish, full price, and when I confronted her about the condition of the fish she tried to quickly cover up her lie and say they just got the fish, to which i replied i was there almost two weeks ago and he was there, so then she admitted that they dont have the food to feed her so she wont eat. And wouldnt even give me 5% off lol this place is a joke, prices higher than ANY other LFS except with select few things that idl will order on amazon from now on
Aquarium adventure is basically The big box store of animal keeping, they are overpriced on everything that is alive, and its mostly a bunch of uneducated people working there. An example is that they have high schoolers working Im the marine aquatic section likely for a minimum wage selling complex and difficult to maintain organisms to other people that dont know better then to shop at other places. Their tanks are usually always cloudy and the fish never look healthy likely because they dont have anybody who knows how to take care of them. Furthermore how the hell are you going to charge $2,800 or more for a mixed breed dog? You can get a show quality purebred miniature collie for that price from a reputable breeder and you will actually know what youre getting not something that comes from a puppy mill. I did however give aquarium adventure 3 stars because they do have an excellent selection of dry goods for your animals care. Please dont buy animals from aquarium adventure though find somebody who knows what theyre doing and get your pets from them.
The aquarium side is good: a bit more expensive than your Petsmart/Petco but the fish are healthier and there is a much better selection. On weekends short stops are impossible as there are huge waits and the poor employees are stuck dealing with people asking questions about their goldfish bowls🙄The Petland side is horrific though, super small, dirty cages with puppies that came straight from puppy mills. Selling them like that should be banned like it is in other states.
If youre looking for something exotic or difference for your aquarium setup, look no further. They have a huge selection to choose from. Fresh water, salt water, brackish water, they have it all. Yes, the prices are a bit higher than your average petco or PetSmart, but you really cant compare those places to here. From exotic fish you cant get anywhere else, to the basics. And any supply you need you can find here as well. Very knowledgeable staff as well. Amazing displays tanka as well.
They have a good selesction of fish, but their prices are WAYYYY overpriced! Their staff is not helpful and not knowledgeable at all. They smoke in the back room. Call them and make up a fish and ask if they have it and they will tell you yes. They said they carry Asian Arowanas...
Weve been here multiple times. Im incredibly disappointed this time. We were looking at some rock and 2 employees came over with another customer and kept pushing us out of where we were looking. Didnt apologize, say excuse me or anything. Didnt even look at the rock we were.
I will give them that there is a very wide selection of fish and aquatic plants at this store. They have huge display tanks with fish that used to be impressive, but now they just look extremely cramped now that the fish are large. There is also a huge saltwater tank in the middle, but the light is never on in it so it looks pretty sad, and the fake corals look absolutely awful, especially in a store that specializes in fish. The problem is, most of them are 2-3x the price at other stores, and offer absolutely no difference in quality of livestock. In fact, I would say that they are lower quality. I have never had trouble keeping fish alive from any other source other than this one, and that includes hardy fish such as guppies and swordtails. all went into an established tank that held much more delicate fish, but within 18 hours, all were dead. Took them back, and the store only allows for store credit, which in this day and age is just an obvious way of saying you know your product is of subpar quality. Another indication of that is their warranty: its only 48 hours. Even cruddy places like PetSmart and PetCo have 14 DAY guarantees on their fish.Their equipment and supplies are also pretty overpriced. Would never buy something like a filter or tank there, ever. Even the big box stores that run at MSRP are way, way below this place. Anything more than odds and ends such as dry food, air stones, air/water line etc is best bought somewhere far away from here. The staff overall are pretty short on even basic knowledge of the species there short of the most run of the mill species, but like to brag about all of these tanks they have at home (which to any experienced fishkeeper would know they are a complete disaster if they actually exist). Many of them also like to try to get people to buy fish that go together simply because they are from the same part of the world. Anyone that knows fish knows that it isnt that simple. The absolute final straw I had was after noticing a tank full of rams had ich and pointing it out to multiple associates, one of the same associates still tried to sell me said german blue rams and said I should have a quarantine tank anyways. Quarantine tanks are supposed to be for problems that you do NOT know about, not for fish that you buy that are already sick. So Im supposed to buy a pair $20 german blue rams (again, 3x the price of other sources), then buy medication to fix the ich (easily another $10-20), and then when they die from stress and/or disease in three days, they wont refund the money because its outside of the 48 hour guarantee. Right...I will never shop there on principal alone. No associate should be trying to sell fish that she knows are sick to customers, especially with a disease as contagious and possibly deadly as ich. Had it been some other person that does not have 15+ years of experience, they may have well bought the fish and introduced them to their tank at home which would have infected everything. Shame on that woman and shame on the store for not only employing people like that but also not quarantining new shipments.
I find AA a bit too hit or miss in the friendliness and pricing departments to consider it a true go-to LFS. In typical big-box fashion sales are confusing, one day there is, next day you have to be a fish club member, while all along they said they would run consistent sales throughout their storewide remodeling. When you question them on that they get a bit huffy with the customer. (Customer = the person who pays the bills!)
AVOID - AVOID - AVOID. This is an awful place. First off, the fish I got there were overpriced! They were $2 more than in two other stores for the same fish (Pet Supply Plus is much cheaper and also Petco). Second, they have the worst return policy, only 48 hours. Pet Supply Plus has 2 weeks to get your money back if a fish dies. Third, I was given the wrong advice as to which kind of fish will be ok with what I already have in my tank (which I am just building up). I will NEVER shop in this place again. AVOID - AVOID - AVOID
Was at the boilingbrook location today. I was waiting for help. A employee came up to me asked if I needed anything. I said yes i need some plants. Than that employee went to ask a other customer if he needed help. That other customer said yes I have already been helped she will be right back.. he passed me up even after the customer said he was already helped. I guess I wasnt spending enough money. I walked out without buying anything. I know spending 60 dollars is not the sale of the day but I know some other business will like that sale.. I WONT BE BACK.
Only problem is that the folks here are on commission, so you need to do your research before you go in. Also, their sales are never truly sales because they have such a high markup. A lot of mom and pop stores such as tropiquatics in Lombard or gillz n thrills in Lockport offer a lot higher quality at better prices.
Awful place. They run on a centralized system for everything so anything bad that could happen, does. I once purchased a pleco that once in my tank immediately just sat there and later died. All the rest of my guppies died from callamanus worms. It was a catastrophe. When I went for help they tried to sell me everything that should help which were just a bunch of antibiotics I later learned were completely useless. They only work for the commission. I would much rather go to the non-centralized system of tropi-quatics, granted its not stellar in overall fish health, but youre more likely to get fish that can be healed unlike aquarium adventures one step from death fish. The only thing theyre remotely good for is there selection of other supplies, granted amazon is better unless your in a pinch because theyre all overpriced. Coming from someone who is savvy in everything but live fish everything about this place is WRONG. They only care about your one time business, not your returning business.
The dancing fish was cool I forgot to ask was kind it was, if someone can tell me what it is that would be awesome. 4 stars because my only problem was the painted shells on the hermit crabs other then that it seemed like at this store everyone knew what they where doing, and took goo care of the animals
Fish are a bit more expensive than if you go to persmart or petco but they have a wider variety of healthy looking fish and aquatic plants. The associate that bagged me powder blue dwarf gourami even found me some frogbit in one of their display aquariums since they didn’t any for sale currently
The way the animals are treated is disgusting, what I saw made me sick to my stomach. 50+ birds with their wings clipped stuffed in a tiny cage. 10+ hamsters in cages a few of which were very sick and werent getting the care they needed. Dogs in tiny cages. The rats lived in shoe box sized cages with only food and water...nothing else. All the animals are in horrible conditions and if you really care about animals I suggest not going here.

2022-02-13My family and I have come here a couple times as we recently started a small fish aquarium in our house. Their fish selection is amazing, and we have found their staff to be very knowledgeable about fish care and very friendly. They also have a huge selection of aquariums and decor. Maybe you pay slightly less at the local big box pet store, but this place is worth any extra cost for their selection and expertise. We also picked up a handful of ember tetras today and were pleasantly surprised they were on sale for half off (and CHEAPER than the big box stores, most of which dont have ember tetras). Highly recommend.

2022-05-04I have been coming to Aquarium Adventure for just over 2 years now and have been keeping freshwater fish. After starting to get the itch to start a saltwater tank to learn. I came to be very confused and overwhelmed very quick with all the different parameters, water condition, and all of the rules that come with owning a successful saltwater tank. After walking into the store yesterday and I began talking with an employee named Brian. He immediately went over the different type of tanks you can create with saltwater and how each one of the works and the requirements for each. Brian went beyond the extra step and helped me map out what the required steps are for starting and as well as maintaining a healthy and successful saltwater aquarium. Explained the benefits of live rock and how to properly organize the tank to maximize the filtration and for proper aeration. We then moved to talk about what types of fish I would like to stock my 55 gallon with. I proceeded to tell Brian I honestly have done minimal research and starting going down a list I had created of different fish. Brian went fish by fish and knew ALL of the facts about the fish I was inquiring and truthfully relieved a huge part of the confusion I was having with the communities you can build! Just knowing that Brian cared enough to talk out and build the tank while showing me around the saltwater side of the store with compatibilities of fish, I was even asking about corals and there was not one question that was left unanswered, Brian is the reason I will be coming back to the store and his knowledge of both Saltwater and Freshwater is outstanding. The amount of care he takes with wanting to learn about the customers tank and wants the best for the fish along with making sure we as the hobbyists can enjoy the most of our tank. Now I know my tank is not much to the veteran hobbyists but this for a start I could not be happier. Knowing I did all the steps correct to ensure healthy fish along with a happy tank thanks to Brian.

2022-02-27This place was amazing! Had an exceptional selection of fish and the employees were extremely helpful. The associate that helped me with my purchase came looking for me after I said I want sure if I was done. The tanks were very well kept and the reptiles cages were pristine. They also had some ferrets, rodents and birds that were all very well socialized. The only issue I had with this place was the space to move around with a shopping cart. The prices were decent as well.

2022-04-20We joined the fish club here and have been reaping the benefits of savings. It is often very crowded here though, and it can be difficult to find a knowledgeable staff member who is able to assist and answer any questions. I am a beginner tank owner and like to be able to trust the workers to give me information that will keep my fish happy and healthy. The selection for all supplies at this store is great and the best Ive found in the area. The fish weve brought home are always in great condition.

2022-04-15A great place to shop and learn! I went in a little clueless and their staff was very helpful. Caleb answered all my questions and exceeded my expectations. From helping me pick out rocks for my aquarium to answering questions about fish this dude was so helpful. The cashier was also great! I’ll definitely be back.

2022-04-05I used to have this as a 4 star rating but the invasive snails I got from the plants here are too much. I have shed many tears dealing with these bladder snails and I am unable to purchase a snail-eating loach since I have a male betta currently in the tank. Didnt even get a warning from the worker, even called and just got told to get a loach even though my betta cannot be with other fish. If you are reading this review please do not buy their plants. Waste of time and money.

2022-01-09Was gifted a fluval underwater filter from husband I tried it out and it didn’t work all filters are un open except the carbón since it clearly states on the direction of the fluval to rinse the carbon before useI went to return itthe store refused to accept item I obviously had to try it in order to know if it worked but couldn’t get the money back on a 250 plus purchase. I don’t see anything of this matter on the policy of not being able to receive store credit or money back if it doesn’t work again it’s the holidays and it was a gift for ChristmasTerrible service Karen was the manager that helped us wasn’t able to get a number for corporate or a name this was a holiday gift don’t purchase from here unless you are sure it fits and it works because you can’t return it and you will be out on a good amount of moneypurchase from other stores over priced terrible service !

2022-06-25They do have a good assortment of fish, the plants are full of snails. The biggest thing for me is that they are petland and they are the company that has made their Fortune on puppy mill dogs on the back of the breeding dogs that have been living in a cage their entire life so this company wont get my business anymore

2022-06-26Great place to shop for pet products. The only thing was I was ignored by employees, and the store was pretty empty. Maybe they didnt think this old woman didnt know anything about fish. To bad they didnt know how much experience Ive had with tropical fish not to mention i was VP of Chicagoland Aquariusts Club.
